As someone driven to become a professor, I love to teach and have a great passion for sharing my knowledge with others! I am most passionate about math and hard sciences, such as biology, chemistry, and physics and have most experience tutoring middle school, high school, and college students. My educational philosophy holds that all students are highly educable and are capable of becoming constructive and valuable members of society. It is therefore my responsibility as a teacher to meet each student at the point of his/her capability and knowledge, and to nurture, encourage, and instruct him/her in order that the student may realize his/her full potential. Students have a variety of learning styles, and my instruction must be designed to engage a diverse group of learners. It is my obligation to keep abreast of evolving theories of learning, pedagogical practices, and developments in educational technology, while maintaining the core values of a humane and holistic education. It is imperative that a teacher first be an eager learner, and that he/she has a profound desire to share that enthusiasm for learning, as well a body of knowledge in his/her discipline, with each and every student. It is the mission of a tutor to provide a bridge for his/her students to enhance their skills in the interest of vocational pursuits and/or for further higher education. Education must be seen as a lifelong pursuit that will enrich all aspects of our lives, and I wish to share that vision with my students.

I like learning anything new and enjoy reading, but I'm not fond of school. I made good gradesonly when the subject interested me. However, I have always done very, very well onstandardized tests, probably because I read so much. I was a National Merit finalist and myLSAT score was in the 99th percentile. In today's system, that is about a 174. I attended lawschool at the University of Houston, graduated, passed the Texas bar with a decent score of 83,and practiced law for a long time. I quit practicing law when I moved to a small town in CentralTexas.I began tutoring about a few years ago and discovered that I truly enjoy the intellectualchallenge of tutoring and the opportunity to interact with a lot of bright, hard-working students. Ihad never tutored or taught before, so I read lots of study guides and picked out suggestionsand tactics that made sense to me. I look for multiple ways to illustrate concepts becauseeveryone understands information differently. My work with students is based on myexperience, what I have studied, and feedback from my students. I think that tackling a problemdirectly is usually faster than looking for a trick or shortcut.I also help students with their applications and enjoy tutoring in writing and similar topics.

I'm French-American, but I grew up in Berlin. In December 2012, I got my BA in Anthropology/Sociology from Mills College.I have been tutoring and teaching since 2009. From 2009 to 2011 I tutored mostly Math freelance and from 2011 to 2012 I taught French part-time at Bay Languages Academy, an after school program in Alameda. I started working with Varsity Tutors in 2013.I have always loved getting to know all of my students. Every single one has taught me so many things about learning and teaching, and I believe in return many have grown from working with me. For me, learning to work with a student is like solving a puzzle. Each student has her or his own unique set of strengths. I believe that figuring out what these are and molding the content around them is the key to good teaching. Helping students to see and to use their own strengths is the least mentioned part of the equation, but for me it is the most important, because that is how I get my kids to become autonomous and self-motivated learners. I've always seen it as a challenging job, but also as enriching, enlightening, and awesome (and I mean awesome in the strongest sense of the word)! I am so happy to be able to continue that work with Varsity. In terms of the subjects I am comfortable teaching, of course Math and French are what I have the most experience with. But I would love to be given the chance to tackle new things as well! For instance, I have an enduring love for literature and writing, and I am also completely fluent in German, having lived in Germany for fourteen years. I would love to be given the occasion to teach some German, English literature, or composition writing. I've often been my friends' informal editor! In my free time, I love to write, read, and watch movies. I love to ski, though I seldom go. I love to travel. I love to go on bike rides with friends, or sometimes just grab a book and go explore the Berkeley hills on my own. I'll sit on a tree stump and watch the sun go down and squint to see the print in my book. Oh - more than anything, I love a good conversation with a friend. But a good conversation with anyone is a treat!I hope to have the opportunity to start many good and productive conversations with parents and students through Varsity!
