As a student in middle school and high school, I personally struggled with both math and reading comprehension. I had never been taught good study habits. However, I changed my approach to school work and graduated Summa cum Laude from college. As a math tutor, my goal is for my students to not only learn, but to also understand that it is an exercise in reasoning. I want them to come to know that math can, in fact, be fun. As a reading tutor, I want to share practices and tips that enabled me to be successful and to instill a lifelong love of reading in my students. I received a Master of Education degree in August 2022.

Greetings! When I was in middle and high school I struggled with math. When I got to college I had a teacher that made the light go off! At that point I wanted to help other students just like me learn math. Because of that I have become a amazing math teacher and would love to help your student out to love math the way that I do.

I earned my BS in Mechanical Engineering from Binghamton University. After doing an internship at NASA I discovered that I wanted to impact lives more personally and so decided to follow another life-long passion of mine - teaching math. I earned my NJ teacher's license in Mathematics and stepped into the high school classroom for nearly a decade specializing in Geometry, special education and test prep. I then ran a math-only learning center which allowed me to not only work with students but also focus on coaching Instructors in best teaching practices for students of all abilities in Pre-K through Grade 12. I am passionate about making math engaging and reducing "math fear". Outside of teaching I enjoy playing with my two boys, knitting and making my own yarn.

To Teach is to LearnTo teach is to touch a life forever is a saying that I will always remember. I received a card from a student many years ago with this inscription on top of a beautiful picture of a heart carefully drawn in the middle of a mandala that was colored in with precise and careful deliberation. I bought a gold frame to preserve this memory forever and placed it on my living room wall. Many times I look up at this gift as it rekindles my inner fire compelling me to teach and touch lives. Ive also re-discovered the phrase and how much meaning it truly holds. As an educator, I am always searching for new ways to motivate my students. I keep up with all the newest teaching trends. However, lately, Ive also discovered how truly golden my time is with my students in the world we live in today. I am talking about more than the mere facts I am teaching them and more than ways to navigate through their school experience. To touch their lives forever, I need to spend time quality time with them. Ive been on the search to further my education and knowledge about the ways I can go above and beyond to make a positive impact in not only students education, but on their drive to learn. Ive scanned through my files, browsed on-line, Googled, and searched endlessly for exciting things to incorporate into my lesson plans to enhance their learning experience. I then figure out ways to personalize this learning in ways each student can relate to as unique individuals. As I reflect on these teaching strategies, it dawned on me that I have a responsibility, not only to teach these children, but to instill the value of learning I know to be true. I have learned in the last few weeks, the best lessons I can teach these students arent found in my filing cabinet or online somewhere, they are found in my heart. And if I give them each a piece of my heart every day, I will touch their lives in more ways than I can count. To teach is to touch a life forever is a phrase that now resonates in my mind and heart each day. Lately, Ive learned more than I ever thought possible. Sometimes, I feel like the lessons that come from listening to our heart are the best lessons.

I was once in the same shoes of many Varsity Tutors' students. I was struggling to learn my subjects and preparing for the SAT standardized test. I came from a rural high school (DuBois, PA) with no AP classes as well as no Honors classes. I was projected that engineering would be too difficult for me and that I should pursue something less rigorous. I ended up graduating with a Honors degree in chemical engineering and a minor in mathematics from the Pennsylvania State University. I then received a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University doing all of my research work with Sandia National Laboratories. I achieved these goals by setting high expectations for myself and striving every day to meet these expectations. I am a tutor that predominantly focuses on STEM and Business subjects from high school through graduate school as well as standardized tests. I really do not have a favorite subject here. I just enjoy teaching students who desire to learn and improve themselves. When I was an undergraduate student as well as a teaching assistant in graduate school teaching first semester students, I could take a person the night before the exam that had no clue of what was going on in class and help them achieve a B on the exam the next day. Standardized tests such as the SAT/ACT exam comprise various courses in high school and I cannot teach someone everything they need to know in one night or if a person is weeks behind in the understanding of the course material. Whether it is a standardized test or learning another subject; an assessment must be determined of where the student is currently in their understanding of the material. Next a game plan must be put together to get the student from where they are currently at to where they want to go. The fact of the matter is unless a student has always struggled in mathematics since kindergarten, they can achieve a perfect or near perfect score on the SAT/ACT mathematics section. The only traits that are required are a high level of expectations as well as the desire and effort to achieve those expectations. When it comes to solving problems, I will always ask the student on how they would solve a particular problem. Their answers can range that they definitely know how to solve it to they have absolutely no idea. I would then guide them along through each problem with the goal to have them understand a correct approach needed and to instill in the student a better understanding of the material as time goes along. As far as more information about myself, I am a person that enjoys learning and growing in all pursuits and my favorite hobby is working out and lifting weights at my local Planet Fitness. Additional Information: I am a STEM based tutor for Varsity Tutors in which I tutor everything from entry level to advanced subjects in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, all Engineering disciplines, and MBA courses. I am continuously adding both courses in an individual field as well as fields themselves to tutor. I tutor from 6th grade to graduate school as well as students with mental disabilities. I help students from inner city schools to the top boarding schools in the US to state public universities as well as the ivy league. I work with students at international universities along with international students in the US as well as adults going back to school.

Personal StatementMathematics is a very challenging discipline. In addition to it being challenging and demanding, it is also intimidating. Anyone who has ever spent hours working on math problems has learned to respect this area of specialty. Academia, however, is seeing an influx of students who enter each course wondering if that particular course will turn out to be the one that will derail their career dreams. Students are fully aware of the difficult task that lies before them and despite their best efforts they are still not successful. As a result, educators have the daunting task of identifying student's abilities, diagnosing and treating fear, in addition to teaching them the new material.A major component of my teaching philosophy deals with the fear component. Let me contest that I do not believe that students are lazy or incompetent but rather they are disgruntled and misinformed; that they somehow strayed away due to constant failures in mathematics. Failure can be constructive as long as it is dealt with quickly and by someone who knows the path to success. The problem is that this usually doesn't happen. Students typically work independently and without guidance. Students typically underestimate the time needed to learn the concepts needed; take too many complex courses while juggling a career and a family; but the greatest cause, in my opinion, is fear and anxiety, fear of not knowing where to begin and fear that their best efforts in the study process will still cause them to fail. As a result, students tend to avoid the issue altogether. As I am nearing my twentieth year as an educator, I am still dealing with this obstacle. There is no simple solution and I certainly will not devalue a student's education. Instead, I have felt that I should simply be honest about the task at hand. We as educators should make it clear that persistence is the key here and that there will be few chances at instant gratification. Mathematics is one of those courses that require a lot of investment in one's time and energy before results are shown. My convictions on mathematics and education in general are that people will always fear what they do not understand. It is the responsibility of the instructor to reduce that fear by presenting the material in such a way that students can understand and ultimately build confidence. All of these things can be done without compromising the goals of the course. Awareness on the part of the student will help immensely in eliminating the fear of mathematics. It is with this charge that I took up a career in education. I wanted a career that would allow me to assist students in becoming exceptional communicators, logical thinkers, and independent learners. By collaborating with students in their own education, we together can bring about successful mathematics instruction and enlist in students a feeling of pride, enjoyment, and appreciation of mathematics.

I am from Atlanta, Georgia, and a fifth year graduate student in a clinical psychology doctoral program at Marquette University, where I also earned my Master's of Science. I graduated from Georgia State University in 2016, earning a Bachelor's of Science in Psychology with departmental distinction. At Marquette I do A LOT of research and it is all about how to help adolescents become more resilient and lead healthy lives. Most of my work focuses on how positive teacher-student relationships can be protective and beneficial for adolescents. This research has really helped me be a more compassionate and engaging teacher and tutor.I have worked with all age groups and taught/tutored everything from canoeing to statistics! I most enjoy tutoring writing. I believe that writing in all forms can open up a world of possibilities and creativity; even scientific writing can be artful. I can also tutor all social sciences, particularly psychology, which is my passion. Additionally, I can help improve confidence and skill in elementary and middle school math, sciences, and reading comprehension, as well as high school history, literature, writing, and biology. I believe learning is beautiful and the magic is in the process! When I am not doing school-related activities, I enjoy trying new restaurants, reading thrillers, cooking, and binge-watching my favorite TV shows on Netflix.
