The student and I worked on expanding the responses that he wrote for the British literature study guide as well as the biology study guide so that his answers are more detailed with info. We then worked on study skills and how he should manage his time for the upcoming week for finals.

In today's lesson with the student, we first reviewed his daily log for the last three days. He wrote down what he actually did, which is an improvement. We then planned the next 10 days as next week he is in a science camp and we will not have any lessons. He will be doing homework during the evenings next week. We then worked on his American government assignment of summarizing in his own words the Constitution.

The student and I reviewed some of her old tests and theorized ways that we could improve on them for the next time she is faced with this particular course. We then examined the introductory problems in her calculus book as there will be a lot of math involved with her upcoming courses. At the beginning the student was unsure of herself but with help she quickly grasped the algebraic concepts that the book was pushing towards for a better understanding of calculus. I feel very confident that if the student diligently puts in the time and effort required for these types of courses she will do excellent in the coming semester.

The student completed the paragraph that I assigned him at our last session. He did very well with it, only making one spelling error, and the ideas that he presented were thought-provoking. We also reviewed his theme chart and added some items to it. Next, we talked about vocabulary and how to study for vocab tests. I gave him a set of ten words (all relating to life and death, which also related to his summer reading book) on a worksheet. The worksheet gave each of the words in a sentence and the student had to determine the meaning of the word using the context clues. After that, we looked up the dictionary definition and made a review sheet. I then instructed the student to come up with another way to study for a vocab test (notecards, quizlet, etc.). At our next session, we will discuss the words and then he will take a "quiz" on them.

We covered assessing the student's current study approach, creating a schedule for studying, and ways to increase motivation for studying (i.e. through reinforcement). We also focused on skills he can use to study more effectively. His attitude was positive toward material. He is a good student with vast knowledge. However, both he and his family feel that his performance could be better with better study habits, especially as he prepares for college. Next session will include reviewing his progress in regard to maintaining a study schedule and his ability to self-motivate. We will continue to discuss ways to study most effectively given time constraints in his schedule. We will also discuss SAT prep, as he states that he will likely take the exam in a few months.
