Each and every year in October, students in high schools across the United States gather to take the Preliminary SAT, or PSAT. Recently, the PSAT was revised to match the new 2016 SAT, including changes to the question types, scoring scale, and overall format of the exam.
The most noticeable change to the PSAT is the creation of many different types of the PSAT. Now the PSAT is introduced in three different formats:
PSAT/NMSQT - This is the version that is the most similar to the previous PSAT/NMSQT, and should be taken by students in the 10th or 11th grade. The score is used for the National Merit Scholarship Program.
PSAT 10 - This version has the same content as the previous PSAT, but it cannot be used for the National Merit Scholarship Program. The PSAT 10 should be taken in the 10th grade of school.
PSAT 8/9 - This is a brand new version of the PSAT and is used to determine the student baseline or progress as they enter high school. This test should be taken in the 8th or 9th grade to determine how well they will do in college.
