If you're preparing for the United States Medical Licensing Exams, Varsity Tutors can help you get ahead by setting you up in a comprehensive Pittsburgh USMLE prep program. These programs are designed to help you prepare for your licensing exams so that you're able to approach the assessments with the confidence and knowledge needed to succeed. For many students, even those attending top institutions like the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, the USMLE can become a major source of stress. Not only is it comprehensive, looking at all the important concepts covered in medical school, you're also required to pass it before you can actually practice medicine. Because of this, a lot of students choose to receive additional assistance by working with a private tutor or by enrolling in a Pittsburgh USMLE prep class.

What concepts will be covered during Pittsburgh USMLE prep?

The USMLE is a lengthy, multiple-exam assessment that's administered over the course of five days. Students usually take different parts of the assessment during different stages of their medical school studies, but the entire assessment is required to be completed within a seven-year period. Additionally, the USMLE is broken up into three sections known as Steps, with each Step covering a different topic. When combined, all three Steps end up evaluating everything you've learned during medical school and include subjects like the Gastrointestinal System, the Male and Female Reproductive Systems, and Multisystem Processes and Disorders. The content covered in the USMLE prep programs will look at all the topics you'll encounter on the test.

The first part of the USMLE is known as Step 1. Here, you'll be quizzed on basic science concepts and will be expected to apply that knowledge practically in a medical setting. Things become more complicated for Step 2, which is broken up into two separate parts: Clinical Knowledge and Clinical Skills. The Clinical Skills portion of Step 2 is especially challenging because it requires you to attend to the issues of 12 patients in a set amount of time. You're given 15 minutes to engage with each patient and an additional 10 minutes to record their medical notes which means passing this portion requires you to be able to work effectively in a fast-paced setting.

You have to pass Step 1 and 2 before you're permitted to take Step 3, the final portion of the assessment. Here, you'll be evaluated on your ability to practice medicine in an unsupervised environment. This portion assesses your medical knowledge and how you apply it practically outside the classroom by presenting you with a series of multiple-choice questions and computer-based simulations.

What are the benefits of the different types of Pittsburgh USMLE prep?

There are two types of prep courses you can register for when preparing for the USMLE: private tutoring and virtual lessons. If you're someone who prefers working in a collaborative environment that follows a set curriculum, you might want to consider enrolling in a Pittsburg USMLE prep course. Here, you'll participate in engaging lectures conducted virtually over the Live Learning Platform, using video chat and virtual whiteboards to collaborate with your instructor and peers. As you learn the various concepts covered in the lessons, you can partner up with your peers to solve problems, share tips, and explore new ways to prepare for the exams.

Your other option is to work privately with a Pittsburgh USMLE tutor. This is great for anyone who wants a custom-tailored learning experience that's built specifically for them. Private instruction works especially well for students who want to focus on specific subjects covered on the USMLE, or for people who prefer to learn through hands-on experience rather than classroom lessons. The benefit of working with a private instructor is that they're able to devote more time to helping you overcome challenges, and can even structure lessons in a way pinpoints your weaknesses and helps you overcome them.
