Session Summaries by Physics Tutors

Smyrna, GA Physics tutoring
We covered kinematic and projectile motion problems. The student struggled with finding the unknown variable. We went over multiple problems of finding the unknown variable and she has improved greatly. She has the rest of her homework to complete.

Smyrna, GA Physics tutoring
Today the student worked on her homework, dealing with physics and forces. I showed her how to approach each problem that involves drawing a picture, using Newton's second law, and then solving the problem symbolically and numerically. Overall, this session was a success.

We spent the session discussing static electricity and electric fields and electric potential conceptually. We focused most of the session on the student's recent class demonstrations with a Van der Graaf generator and other demonstrations of static electricity. We spent time drawing pictures of charged and neutral objects and differentiated between conduction and induction, and conductors and insulators. We also watched some videos for clarification. These concepts are new to him, so I pointed out figures and text from his textbook that he should check out this week.

We went over the student's latest package, which was about Newton's Laws and forces. We went over some concept questions for the practice exam and some word problems involving gravitational forces and spring forces. She has a good understanding of force diagrams, though is a little uncomfortable with labeling a "new" force, such as magnetic force, since that wasn't mentioned in class. The set of the problems was new to her, and asked her to label all the forces in x and y dimensions, and then to take the sum of all the forces in each dimensions. If the object is not moving or has a constant velocity in one dimension, then the sum of the forces in that dimension is zero. Using the sum of forces equations with the definitions of gravitational force, Fg=mg or frictional force, Ff=uFn, she could solve for the frictional force, the coefficient of friction, or the magnitude of the applied force.

We went through some problems on impulse, collisions, and kinematics. While grinding out the mathematics for problems, the student doesn't lose track of what's physically meaningful. For instance, if the algebra gives a length traveled by an ice skater that is greater than the circumference of the rink, or a negative value for a mass, he picks it up and becomes cautious about the approach. This is a good habit. He also made a comment about how he would like to schedule the meetings for the weekends so he is not too tired when we get to the sessions. We agreed to set up the schedule via email.

We worked on Newton's laws. First, we reviewed the concepts, then we utilized the question library to practice concepts. Through practice, the student gained understanding and learned how to solve problems.
