Phonics Tutoring review by Rina in Markham, IL
Argumentative essay: Should the government program requiring schools to apply certain health standards to school lunches be enacted? There were a few grammar errors here and there, but none that hindered my understanding of the essay. Overall, he is a strong writer! Organization and developing arguments: He constructs logically valid arguments and understands how to use evidence effectively. Thesis: he had a clear and concise argument. Grammar and style: While he tends to sometimes repeat his points or use the same words, he uses sophisticated vocabulary and grammar patterns. Things to work on: Rebuttals against counter arguments: (it is more persuasive to directly counter a counter argument than to simply restate that your own arguments are "good") Extending conclusions of a paper: Why should the government be concerned about health of citizens? Is it the job of the school to educate students about health? Why should the reader care about this topic?

Phonics Tutoring review by Gregory in Markham, IL
I assisted the student in preparing for the essay portion of his assessment exam. He had written an outline and first draft for an essay prompt that he had received in school earlier. I thought the outline and writing was good overall. I helped the student makes sentences that would connect his ideas to what the prompt was asking of him. We spent the rest of the session working on Spanish, which the student continues to improve in.

Phonics Tutoring review by Mariah in Markham, IL
To start off our session, we played a little alphabet game where they had to name something beginning with every letter of the alphabet. I love using fun activities like these because I understand what it's like being in a country where almost no one speaks your language. I think that learning vocabulary is essential when trying to improve your knowledge of a foreign language so why not make it fun. After that activity, we proceeded to the reading and comprehension aspect of our sessions. I asked both students to read out loud a couple of pages from their novels. Once completed, the sibling listening had to tell us something that happened in the book. At the end, we reviewed the SAT vocabulary handouts from last week. I asked them to complete a worksheet utilizing this vocab words for our next session.
