I graduated from the University of Georgia in May 2012 with a master's degree in social studies education. I received my bachelor's degree in history from Emory University in 2009. I have been tutoring students in various subjects for the last 8 years. During my time at the University of Georgia I taught about 75 US history students at a local high school, as well as tutoring and teaching students in Athens-area elementary and high schools. I am currently certified to teach history, economics, geography and political science in Georgia. I have also taken courses in ESOL and gifted education.I feel that students should have a firm understanding of the process of learning, and not just the ability to memorize random facts. Once students understand how to work through problems and find answers on their own, success in school, and in life outside of school will hopefully come more naturally. Education and learning should be a positive and enriching experience where students come to know and understand the world around them.I have a few interests outside of education. I love running and taking my 2-year-old border collie to dog parks. I also like taking hikes and backpacking wherever there's a good trail. I enjoy learning to cook new things for my friends and family.

"Foreign languages are hard..."I used to not care about foreign languages at all. In fact, I was failing my Spanish III class during my first semester of my junior year in high school within the first month of class. My teacher, a caring and wise man, called me into his office to ask me what was going wrong. He could see that I had some potential and vague interest, but that I wasn't putting in the time and effort. He did what other Spanish teachers had not done before - push me to a whole new level. I studied harder. Began speaking more. Started listening to the radio in Spanish.I brought my grade up, and he made a deal with me. Don't come to class - I want to work with you one-on-one. Only come to class to take a test, then leave and we'll meet later. Before I knew it, I was meeting with him before school and during my free period every day. No English allowed. Then came the short essays. The articles. The Spanish films. The poems. I was hooked. Then I began choosing the assignments, and my proficiency soared. I had found a passion for something I had never thought I would enjoy, and all it took was a simple challenge and vague interest. I realized quickly that he had given me something so much more than any textbook or report card ever could - he gave me the tools to increase my understanding without him.I could go on and on about how learning other languages has changed my view on life, how it has opened so many doors for both my personal and professional growth or how I challenge myself every day, but that would detract from my main message:"Foreign languages are hard... if they remain foreign in your life."You MUST put forth effort every day to use your skills in some way. All I ever hear from people who hear me speak Spanish or Russian is this - "Wow, that's great! How'd you learn to speak like that? I took (Spanish/French/German) for six years and can't remember anything!" My question and their response is always the same, "Well, did you ever use it outside of class?" "No..."My style is this - we will practice, practice, and practice. Not book exercises or random sentences: I'm going to show you to use your language to paint your world in a new light and make you THINK.Think of it like this:No more "Pedro went to the store at 3:00 PM." I'm going to make you think - "Why did Pedro go to the store? What was he wearing? Would he had done the same thing if it was 3:00 AM? Does his mom know? Etc., etc...." It may seem strange at first, but it's the first important step in mastering a language - thinking in it.

As a dedicated tutor, I enjoy helping students build confidence, improve their understanding, and reach their academic goals. I have experience supporting students in subjects such as IB exam, SAT test prep and other test preparation, AP exam prep and class help, etc. My tutoring style is patient, structured, and student-centered. I understand that every student learns differently, so I adjust my explanations based on their needs. Some students need step-by-step guidance, visual examples, or extra encouragement to stay focused. I have also worked with students who benefit from additional support, including students with diverse learning needs, and I aim to create a calm and supportive learning environment. During sessions, I break complex concepts into simple steps, help with exam preparation and assignments, and encourage students to understand the process, not just the answer.

Hi! My name is Hope, and I am so excited you're here!I am sharing a bit about myself below, including my academic background, personal experiences, and philosophy on teaching, so you can get a quick glimpse into who I am beyond my name and profile picture. To start, I am thrilled to have recently obtained my master's degree in special education from The University of Georgia... Go Dawgs! My coursework focused on both adapted curriculum with an autism emphasis and the applied study of human behavior, which I found incredibly enriching and enlightening. I am continuously expanding my knowledge in both of these areas by pursuing further education and clinical experience to prepare for a future board exam.My passion for learning extends well beyond my academic pursuits; I consider myself a lifelong learner, ALWAYS eager to ask questions about absolutely anything and everything. I mean, I know for sure my parents can attest to the fact there was no end in sight to the amount of "why?" questions I could ask them when I was younger! And even now :)! Nonetheless, this innate drive for learning has not only enhanced my personal growth but has also empowered me to better serve others. On a personal level, I have had my own challenges to overcome. As a late-diagnosed neurodivergent individual, both ADHD and autistic, I know firsthand the difficulties that can arise when it comes to accessing appropriate services, care, and a supportive learning environment. Through sharing my experiences on this platform, I hope to remind my clients that they are not alone in their struggles, and that there is nothing inherently wrong with them. I believe that everyone needs help in their lives, and it is essential and emboldening to recognize the power of seeking assistance.Although we cannot change the brains we were born with, we can learn to work with them instead of against them. This shift in mindset can have transformative effects on one's life, providing a solid foundation for self-growth and development. Psychological flexibility and a deeper understanding of how your unique brain functions can lead to self-acceptance, resilience, and a sense of grace with where you are in your journey. These skills are not typically taught in schools, yet they are crucial in navigating life's challenges... Academically and holistically! With all that now said, I wholeheartedly invite you to reach out if you would like to know more about me or are interested in working together. I am genuinely passionate about helping others, and I would be thrilled to explore if I am the right fit for either you or your child!Sincerely,Hope

I am a fourth-year student at UGA working on a dual major in English and Economics while moving towards grad school for studies in Writing and Literature. While I am glad to use my experience in Economics to help students with math, I believe an understanding of the English language is an immensely important factor supporting a student's education, and one often disregarded. I hope to help students get a grasp of not just the simple rules, but why they are important to the effective communication they will be using for the rest of their lives, whether that be through understanding the basic grammar of our language or through the effective formatting of academic writing. My philosophy is that every apparent mistake is a clear opportunity for progression; every time I struggled with an assignment or made a bad grade in school showed me clearly what to do and how to improve my skills in the subject. I hope to help my students use this potential to its fullest. I live a full life outside of school as well, spending a lot of time outdoors with my friends mountain biking or hiking, and when I can't get away to the mountains, I keep up with my local contact boxing club. When I'm taking it easy, I love to work on writing short stories and some of my longer form works I hope to publish soon.

I love science! For 20 years I have taught many science classes at the high school level and have enjoyed helping students make that connection between science and their individual lives. Science helps us make sense of what is around us and seeing students "get this" is important to me. I am now retired but miss that interaction with students which I hope to have again through tutoring. Science CAN be fun but also can have meaning to everyone! It doesn't have to be scary but is relevant to so much in our lives. My experiences as a researcher, teacher, nature lover, and parent all come together as I work with students and I look forward to this opportunity!

I graduated from the University of Georgia having studied Latin, Sociology, and Political Science. Though my B.A. was in Latin, I became a science teacher because that was what was needed at the low-income school where I began teaching. With my mother and grandmother both having been teachers and my commitment to helping the world, it was not surprising that I tutored my own students frequently, developed ways to help them through state and standardized tests in my classroom, and always loved it. For adolescents, I find that reclaiming their academic experiences through reflection was just as important on drilling them in the facts when it came to ACT, SAT, and AP preparation. A few opportunities to help the parents of my students reinvigorated me as I helped adults get their GED, pass required college courses for their degree, and prove to themselves that anything is possible with hard work!

I am a recent graduate from The University of Georgia in Genetics with a minor in Math. Like most students prior to the start of college, I always pondered: Why do I need to take all of these math classes if I am a science major? When will I ever use this in my life? The answer came to me once I entered into college and took my first couple of math classes. I discovered that mathematics and science interchange with each other and understanding one will enable you to have a deeper comprehension of the other.I started tutoring fellow classmates throughout my high school career. The topics that I tutored ranged from pre-algebra to pre-calculus. In college, I began to tutor my classmates in Calculus I and II along with many science courses such as Biology, Organic Chemistry, and Genetics. When I teach my classmates about any topic, I will always initiate by asking them questions regarding the topic they are struggling with. This will allow me to know specifically where and what they are struggling with and need help in. Afterward, I will clearly explain and clarify any misunderstanding they have. Once they believe that they have completely understood the topic, I will then ask them to explain it to me. My main theme is that "If a student is unable to explain to me the concept, then he/she does not understand the topic." My desire to tutor others is not only to help them figure out many approaches to solve a problem or understand a concept, but I also want them to understand the importance of what they are learning and its applications to real life. This will enlighten them and make them want to learn more, not just to know the topic and stop.During my free time, I love playing basketball and going bowling with friends. One of the games that I love to play the most is Chess because it allows me to think ahead and it opens my mind to many possibilities.

As an undergraduate in the Honors Program at the University of Georgia, I studied Physics and Astronomy. During this time I helped found the first laboratory at my university dedicated to the research and development of small satellites, and through this experience I earned an internship at NASA Langley Research Center. After graduating, I completed one year of a PhD program at Georgia Tech in Ocean Science and Engineering, and I am now pursuing my biggest passion, marine conservation, in Wilmington. I began tutoring math, chemistry, and physics back in high school, and have continued since then. In college, I was a peer learning assistant (sort of like a teaching assistant) for a physics class that catered toward non-physics majors. Thus, I am experienced in tutoring both high school and college students with a range of experience in math and science. The subjects I can help with are math (algebra, calculus, and anything in between), physics (high school and college), and even flute and music theory. My favorite subject to help students with is physics, because I enjoy helping people think about problems from new perspectives and empowering them to tackle a subject traditionally seen to be so challenging. When I am tutoring, I operate by the philosophy that everyone is capable of learning new things, and that math and science are not as difficult as they seem on the surface. I always encourage students to believe in their abilities, and I am never judgmental of anyone's learning style and pace. I can successfully guide students to breaking difficult concepts apart into smaller pieces to make them easier to understand. Outside of tutoring, I am a musician, with my main instruments being flute and ukulele. I love hiking, baking, painting, making friends, doing yoga, and reading books. My favorite animal in the world is a humpback whale, and I want to dedicate my life to protecting them and other cetaceans. As a lover of all things math, science, nature, and music, I would love to share my knowledge and passions with anyone who reaches out.

I am an author, educator, and entrepreneur. I have obtained my B.S. Degree in Human Development and Family Studies, M.A.T. in Special Education, and Ed.S. in Educational Psychology from the University of Georgia. My studies fueled my passion for primary education, where I taught preschool through 1st grade for seven years. My teaching experiences led me to create children's books that support communication, character development, and social-emotional learning. Social-emotional learning and character development should be fun and engaging to transcend the home and school environment. I created the Character Kids book series and the nonprofit organization Character Kid based on this belief. Since 2009, I have served as a youth mentor, primary educator, grade level lead, tutor, and dance coach. As an adolescent, I was a part of stepping, dance, cheerleading, band, gymnastics, science olympiad, chorus, and basketball. Those adolescent experiences pushed me to Co-Found Class Act Detroit: a youth organization focused on equity and access to high-quality after-school programs. I desire to challenge students to tap into their academic and creative aptitude to develop who they choose to be.

Hello! I am freshly graduated from the University of Georgia and very excited that I can continue to work in the academic world. In my 16 years of schooling in Atlanta and Athens, I have come to feel that the structure of our educational system, while undoubtedly helpful to many students, often leaves much to be desired. In classrooms packed with dozens of students, teachers often cannot devote the necessary time to individual students to help them with the particular questions and problems they encounter in their studies. Students also cannot help but compare themselves with their peers around them, and often become discouraged when they cannot seem to understand what so many people around them appear to grasp in an instant. This problem of student discouragement is a serious one, because learning starts with motivation; students will not be motivated to learn in an environment where they feel overwhelmed, scared, or unintelligent. That's where tutoring comes in. I've found that the best way for anyone to learn is by meeting with a teacher one-on-one. I was fortunate enough to study for three months in Oxford, England in 2010, and during those three months I learned more than I ever have at any other time. More importantly, I was energized and excited by my experience, and my self-confidence rose tremendously. The secret was the format of the education in Oxford. There, professors meet with their students one-on-one, and thus the students receive a uniquely personal education, tailored specifically to their particular needs. There were no massive classrooms full of forty or fifty kids who all have different educational needs; there was no comparing yourself to your peers; there was no discouragement when a teacher was not available to meet.No - the personalized education I received at Oxford boiled down to only two elements: my own desire to learn, and my professor's desire to teach me. Both are essential elements to any teacher-student relationship. For my own part, I am passionate about my subject areas in particular, and education in general, and am eager to take on new students who want to learn. I am a relaxed, happy person who will put students at ease, but I also have lots of energy that will kick-start students into getting excited about their subjects. I read and write every day, and am preparing a collection of my short stories for publication. I also write and perform for a comedy group in Athens, and play in a rock and roll band called Ghost Lights. I like to have fun, but I also recognize that discipline and hard work are essential to personal well-being, especially in school.Knowledge is power, and indeed, as Benjamin Franklin said, "Knowledge pays the best interest."

I have been a high school teacher for over 14 years, and I am passionate about working with kids of all ages as well as with adults. I believe that a great tutor is helpful, kind and encouraging, works at a comfortable pace, explains concepts in a way that the student can understand, changes her teaching style if something is not working, and always tries to find fun, engaging ways to help students learn the material. A superior tutor does all these things, but also teaches students how to teach themselves so that they can eventually become independent life-long learners. Individual tutoring does wonders for student learning and performance because it gives students the chance to work with someone whose number one goal is to tailor instruction to fit the specific needs and personality of the students in a way that a classroom setting cannot provide. One of the most rewarding parts of being a teacher is seeing a student overcome the challenges he/she is facing and become confident as he/she sees her grades getting better and better.I enjoy spending time with my three sons (ages 5, 7 and 13) swimming, playing sports and reading. Mary graduated from the University of Georgia in 2010 with an A.B.J. in Public Relations and a B.A. in Spanish. Her interest in education started when she tutored immigrant students as an undergraduate. This interest continued to expand through her work as a teacher at an urban elementary school in Atlanta, where she led her students to achieve significant academic growth. Wanting to gain a deeper knowledge about the issues surrounding education and levers for improvement, Mary attended the Harvard Graduate School of Education and earned her Ed.M. in Education Policy and Management in Spring 2015. Mary currently lives in New York City and works as a consultant for an education non-profit. She tutors most K-12 subjects, but she especially passionate about teaching reading and writing to students of all ages. Her tutoring style is to ensure that students gain a deep understanding of the material and are able to analyze, synthesize, evaluate, and explain in their own words. It is also very important to her that students experience the joy of learning! Besides education, her interests include traveling, reading, and practicing yoga. .

I am a current undergraduate student at the University of Georgia with majors in Biology and Psychology and a minor in Spanish. I have four years of tutoring experience, with two of them being completely virtual during the COVID-19 pandemic, so I am knowledgeable in virtual tutoring. I am currently a volunteer tutor at an after school program for elementary school students, where I assist with English and Math. Much of my expertise lies in one-on-one tutoring for elementary and middle school students. The subjects I am best at teaching include Language Arts and Chemistry, but I am also qualified to teach Essay Help, Biology, Spanish, and Math (K-8). In high school, I quickly realized that many of my teachers weren't teaching content in a way that made sense to me. I needed much more time and work to understand concepts than the teacher would give us, and I constantly felt like a failure. During my experience in virtual tutoring, I tailored each tutoring session to the student's learning style to ensure they effectively understood the content (whether this be auditory or visual). If they did not understand, I tried my best to give an alternate explanation. My teaching style is primarily example-based, with a quick introduction of the topic beforehand and time for you to practice afterward. I am also happy to offer homework help if that is what you need! I aim to make learning as effective and enjoyable as possible, and I welcome any suggestions from students or parents. I am quick to respond and would happily work around your schedule. Feel free to contact me with any additional questions!

I was designated as gifted early in my academic career based on scores I earned on aptitude tests. I am an Advanced Placement Scholar, a National Merit Semi-finalist, and a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars honor society among academic recognition I have earned. I was accepted to multiple "T-14" (top fourteen) law schools, including Georgetown Law, which, among other schools, offered me an academic scholarship based on my personal, academic, and professional achievements. Among my tutoring specialties is the SAT on which I scored in the 99th percentile, including perfect scores on the verbal section. I have helped many others increase their SAT performance significantly within a short amount of time by thoroughly breaking down the exam material. I enjoy working with others to help them achieve their maximum performance.

I offer focused tutoring to prepare for standardized or in-class exams.I received my MD from the University of Maryland in 2011. Toward the end of medical school I became involved in helping premedical students prepare for the MCAT exam (I scored 98th percentile on this exam in 2007 and have since obtained higher scores on diagnostics). After medical school I completed my internship at Northwestern University and then left the clinical setting to join an MCAT content development company I founded in 2011. Over the past year, I have coached several students on MCAT preparation. I find these relationships valuable because they help me learn students learn, which helps me to write higher-yield MCAT-style questions. The MCAT contains General Chemistry/ Physics, Verbal Reasoning, and Biology/ Organic Chemistry/ Physiology/ Genetics/ Molecular Biology/ Biochemistry sections, and I feel comfortable tutoring in all these areas. The approach I will help you to implement has 3 parts: (1) Where am I now? (2) Where to I want to go? (3) How am I going to get there? To answer the first question, we'll need your most recent diagnostic test scores and a full summary of your classes/ coursework so far. The second question will be determined by you. The third question I will help you to figure out based on the time you have available to prepare. If necessary, we'll choose additional diagnostics to find your weaknesses. Then, we'll select content materials and practice problems (broken down by week) to target your weaknesses specifically.I look forward to working with you!

I am a recent graduate from the University of Georgia with a major in Chemistry and a minor in Spanish. During my junior year, I spent the fall through summer semesters helping instruct general chemistry classes and organic chemistry labs. Overall, I personally enjoy teaching and tutoring others not only because it better helps people understand some of the more difficult concepts of the material but because it also allows me to fully cement my knowledge and help people further.

As a tutor who previously worked in a university setting, I repeatedly saw students who were terrified of their sciences classes. Whether it was intro to chemistry or cellular biology, science classes caused so many students so much anxiety. I honestly believe that with patience and persistence, difficult material can not only be learned, it can be mastered (and in some cases even enjoyed). My goal is to teach material in a gentle, encouraging, and thorough method so that students can find reach their goals while experiencing less stress over their classes.
