If you are seeking preparation assistance for your student with the ISEE, you should contact Varsity Tutors about enrollment in a Kansas City ISEE prep course for your student. The Independent School Entry Exam is given to students who seek admission to a private or independent school. The test is available in both paper and online formats and is accepted by over 1,200 schools internationally. Parents like you often seek additional resources, like a Kansas City ISEE course, to help prepare their students for the ISEE.
The ISEE has four versions, depending on the student's grade level: Primary Level, Lower Level, Middle Level, and Upper Level. The sections, timing, and the number of questions for every version of the test, except for Primary Levels two through four, are the same. There are five sections on the ISEE: Verbal Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Math Achievement, Quantitative Reasoning, and Essay in which the contents within each section of the ISEE are formatted for the grade level that determines what version of the exam a student will take. The Primary Level has only three sections on the ISEE. The section titles for all Primary Level students are Reading, Math, and Writing. Primary Level two ISEE students have an additional article to complete entitled Auditory Comprehension section that only applies to them.
What materials are used in the online Kansas City ISEE classes?
The Upper-Level ISEE version is for students who are entering the ninth grade or above. Beginning with the Verbal Reasoning section, students are to complete forty questions within a twenty minute set time allotment. A student's English skills, including synonym and sentence completion questions, are the primary focus in Verbal Reasoning. Some of the concepts to know for success on the Verbal Reasoning section are vocabulary, parts of speech, roots, prefixes, and suffixes from Greek or Latin. Another section on the ISEE is Quantitative Reasoning in which the student has thirty-seven questions to complete within thirty-five minutes. This section's main idea focuses more on mathematical thinking. Skills such as working with exponents, solving equations, mean, medium, and mode are required. Next, the Reading Comprehension section will require students to reflect their understanding of literary genres, how to evaluate indirect information that is not explicitly stated, and how to compare and contrast information. Test takers are expected to completely answer thirty-six questions in a thirty-five-minute time frame for the Reading Comprehension section. The third section is Math Achievement, and the primary purpose of this section is to assess the student's math operation skills. A few of the concepts covered in this section of the exam are solving word problems, quadrilaterals and triangles, and the use of coordinate grids. The time allotment for this section is forty minutes to respond to forty-seven questions. Finally, the Essay section lasts thirty minutes. Students are given a prompt in which they will have to provide a written response to show prospective schools their writing abilities. As students produce their essay, they must use correct spelling, grammar, vocabulary, relevant details that add interest to their piece, and punctuation.
Students who are preparing to enter the seventh or eighth-grade are on the Middle Level of the ISEE. On the Middle Version of the exam, the content caters to the grade level of the test taker. The Reading Comprehension will include word clues, the use of suffixes, vocabulary that is appropriate for the educational level, parts of speech and the use of prefixes, suffixes, and root words. Middle-Level students also have a Quantitative Reasoning section that covers decimals, fractions, percents, and integers. Other Quantitative Reasoning skills, like using formulas to calculate measurements and square roots, are also concepts that contribute to this version of the ISEE. As the student begins to navigate through the Math Achievement section, students will have to display their understanding of integer comparison, properties of operations, multiples, prime factors, and how to use a Venn Diagram. The Essay section response is written from a prompt, and the student must display practical writing skills that are taught at their educational level.
Lower Level students are entering the fifth or sixth grade the following school year. The Lower Level students also have a Reading Comprehension section; however, the materials that are in this section include the identification of main ideas and the ability to single out relevant information. Next, the Quantitative Reasoning section evaluates students' knowledge of multiplication, division, identification of geometric objects, and probability. The third section is Verbal Reasoning and focuses on the student's ability to use context clues to complete sentences with the vocabulary found on elementary and middle school word lists. The fourth section is the Math Assessment that includes symmetry, decimals, estimation, and simple operations. Similar to other parts, students are given a prompt and asked to provide a written response which will reflect their writing abilities to prospective schools.
The Primary Level is broken down into three different parts. Students who are entering second grade will test in the Primary 2 category while students who are entering the third-grade test at Primary 3, and fourth graders are Primary 4. The Auditory Comprehension section requires students to listen to passages and provide an answer that relates to the specific reading passage for the question. The time allotment is seven minutes for the student to complete six items on the Primary 2 version on the ISEE. The Reading section for all three Primary versions of the test is given to students in a multiple-choice format to assess reading comprehension and grade-appropriate vocabulary. Multiple-choice questions are also the response format for the Math section of the Primary version of the ISEE. Once again, the math skills of a student are assessed depending on their grade level. The last part is the Writing section of the ISEE. Students are asked to produce a writing sample from a picture prompt and have a chance to show their personality, creativity, and writing skills to prospective schools.

I like to understand the student's strengths and weaknesses and work from there to expand their knowledge in a given subject. Our brains work by combining small bits of information at a time and the process can easily be derailed by anxiety, missing previous information, poor study habits, or a psychological condition. I've worked with students with each of these problems (and more) and seen the vast majority improve their performance, which gives them confidence, which improves their performance even more. It’s incredibly rewarding to be a positive example for students and watching their...

...we can each continue on that journey throughout or lives. No one person understands or internalizes each lesson in exactly the same way, although many of the basic principles are the bases for this understanding and future growth. It is here where we are charged to help others understand in a manner that best accommodates their learning, and then empower them with the tools (and desire) to seek out those answers on their own.... I always want to know what the learner's past experience has been with a particular subject and where the breakdown began. Everyone can learn; they just need to believe it-and they need someone to help them understand in a way that best meets their needs. If my learners know that I am invested in their success and care about who they are, then they will begin to rise to the expectations and soon have the confidence and the abilities that were hidden there all along.
