I graduated from the University of Kansas with a 3.9 GPA. While at KU, I double-majored in Journalism and International Studies with my IS concentration in Western European Literature. After college, I taught English for two years at Capitol Hill High School in Oklahoma City, OK as a member of the “Teach For America” program. I taught two highly rigorous courses for both 10th and 12th graders, and, for each, I created my own curriculum. While at Capitol Hill, I helped found an after school tutoring program for my 10th and 12th grade students. I have tutored now for almost four years (will be four years in May). I tutor 5th-12th grade English and math up to Algebra. I love to tutor students in everything, but English is my passion. There are so many daunting tasks that go along with reading a novel or drama, learning critical thinking skills and outlining, drafting and editing a critical analysis essay. However, there is no greater joy than seeing the pride that a student feels in his or her work upon completing this type of task. That is why I love English.I have a very unique style of tutoring. When I taught, I had 120 students who learning and reading levels spanned seven grade levels (4th through 10th). A significant amount of my students were English Language Learners and almost all my students had different learning modalities or styles. This taught me how to identify and adapt. My tutoring style is much similar. Identifying your student's reading and leaning level as well as his or her learning modality or style is always the first step. After that, in helping my students, I take a very inquiry-based approach to tutoring, creating leading questions that force the student to find the answer themselves rather than simply being given the answer from the tutor. I do this for two reasons. The first is critical thinking skills and probing questions such as those I ask my students will help them succeed in the higher echelons of educations. And secondly, it is very important for a student to advocate for his or her own education. They need to understand where they need help and, more importantly, why they need the help they are getting (i.e. what part of that subject they are struggling with). When they understand what they are doing wrong and they find the answer "themselves" after answering several leading questions, they are more energized and excited, and they are ready to work even harder.Outside of tutoring, I enjoy many things. I hike, fly-fish and run as much as I can. I love watching all forms of football, and I am an avid Royals fan. I also enjoy theatre and plays, and I try to read at least an hour everyday.

I believe that to be a student not only means to succeed in school but to become a lover of knowledge. This philosophy has guided me since I started tutoring freshman year in college. My strengths lie in reading, writing, and all things humanities. I have a genuine love for tutoring and the subjects I teach, and I aim to create an open, informative, and effective atmosphere with my students, one that can shape them into philosophers or true lovers of knowledge.

I have a great love of puzzles. They can come in many forms. There are basic puzzles, such as crosswords or sudoku, and more complex ones. To me, all learning is like solving a puzzle. Unpacking each word in a Yeats poem is like gathering jigsaw pieces, and constructing a thesis for an essay is like putting them together. Algebra and Geometry are subjects that naturally lend themselves to puzzling. Each equation has a solution. I enjoyed learning these subjects, and I love sharing that with new people. When I am a student, the subject matter is the puzzle. When I am a teacher, my student becomes the riddle. There is a barrier between the student and the material, and it is my role to identify this and look for solutions. What works for one student may not work for another, and I feel that there is always more than one way to approach a solution. I believe that tutoring is the most beneficial form of teaching, because it is as much about the learning style of the client as it is about the subject matter. Personalized approaches and self-motivated learning are essential ingredients for academic success.

I believe that life is precious and far too short for many of us, so I choose to live by the motto, "Work hard, and play harder." While I don't believe that you have to work hard in order to enjoy life, I choose to work hard so that I can enjoy all this life has in store for me. I find most of my joy in this life come from helping others. I have tutored in the areas of English and Essay Writing for the past ten years. While pursuing my Master's degree in English from Auburn University Montgomery, I taught English Composition and worked as a tutor in the Student Learning Center. I worked with traditional and non-traditional students in subject areas such as Basic College Writing, Introduction to Composition and Introduction to American Literature. While pursuing my Ph.D. in English from The University of Georgia, I taught courses in English Composition and American Literature and worked as a Writing tutor in the University Writing Center. As a Writing tutor, I worked with undergraduate and graduate students from all disciplines, tutoring in such areas as grammar and mechanics, organization, thesis development, APA and MLA formatting. In this capacity I have worked with students in all grade levels, as well as professionals, in the areas of English and Essay Writing. As a tutor, I strive to maintain a student-centered tutoring environment, in which I focus on higher order concerns and help students develop a level of comfort in identifying and correcting errors in their writing.
