Elementary Math Tutoring review by Ana in Maryland
Today I worked with the student on shape congruence. We also looked at how to find the area of different geometric shapes which included triangles, squares, parallelograms, and circles. We then spent time on working on finding the area of a circle and the circumference of a circle. We also discussed how to find a radius of a circle from the circle's diameter. He did well with working through multi-step problems.

We looked ahead to what the student will be working on this week: dividing decimals by whole numbers. She is very good at this but has trouble when the numerator gets large enough that she doesn't have the multiples memorized. She also did a much better job recognizing when to divide in word problems.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Harmony in Maryland
In getting to know the student we discussed some of her difficulties in math and science. Most of her trouble in science stems from lacking mathematical skills. She is struggling with fractions and conversions. I worked with her on solving scientific conversions as this was especially difficult her and it carries over into her math usage. When we began she found setting up single conversions very laborious. We developed a strategy to help her and by the end of the session she was able to successfully complete multi-step conversions on her own.

The student had a test on factoring and dividing factorials on Friday and felt very good about it! She said everything was very easy. We went back to reviewing the multi-equation word problems she had been struggling with and she is feeling much better about them. We will continue to review these problems until she can complete them easily.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Ronda in Maryland
Today we covered two digit by two digit multiplication practice. The student has some difficulty with the standard algorithm but was able to solve problems after I modeled it for him and he mirrored the steps on his own problem. I left him with two pages of extra practice to go over our next session.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Marissa in Maryland
Yesterday the student and I began her session with a short game that helped her review her multiplication and division tables. We reviewed the vocabulary for translating word problems into equations. We focused on solving multi-step word problems, in particular, how to write the problem into an equation, because she understands how to solve the problem when guided but does not translate the problem into a solvable equation to help guide her through the process. For ELA, we edited her essay for class which is due next week. She wrote her paragraphs but there was extraneous information so I worked with her on editing for details that support the main idea. She needed help with her conclusion so we used her outline to finish up the last paragraph. We then read her essay out loud and made changes as needed. We began an exercise in transition words and sentences so that she can apply them to her final essay next week.
