ACCUPLACER ESL - Reading Skills Tutor • +39 Subjects

I have developed an interest in tutoring because I am looking for additional opportunities to work with students beyond my teaching career. I am a passionate and enthusiastic teacher who has experience working at the elementary, middle and high school level. I have taught both English and Remedial Reading classes at these levels, and I have a passion for working with struggling students and helping them succeed. I have a Bachelors Degree in English Education and a Masters in Literacy. I have done extensive work with curriculum development for Reading and English classes. I love collaborating with others, and I feel that I do a great job building relationships with my students that help them succeed. I enjoyed planning lessons that appeal to the interests of my students and also meet their learning needs because I feel this is when my students are most successful. When I am not working with students, I enjoy reading, spending time outdoors and trying new recipes. I spend a lot of time with my two dogs, Bronx and Brady, who are really like my children. I also enjoy traveling, especially to the beach and during the summer months!

American Literature Tutor • +29 Subjects

I recently graduated from Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY with my BA in English Literature and Secondary Education. I plan on attending Marist College in Summer 2017 to obtain my Master's in Educational Psychology. My passion for English had started in my early days in elementary school when I used reading and writing as an escape, and a way to express my feelings when I felt like I wasn't being listened to. However my passion for Education arose when I found I genuinely enjoyed helping my peers with their homework, with lessons, and even with projects. I love to see the look of students and peers when they finally understand something that had been escaping them. I also just really like helping people in anyway that I can.Although, don't be frightened, I'm actually a pretty relatable person so if something is bothering you, don't be afraid and know you can tell me. I've helped many peers in the past both with their coursework and also with things that were bothering them. Funny enough when the personal problem was solved I saw a strong comeback in the subject that was bothering them. The way I look at it I'm here to help you succeed, and I will use my content and education knowledge to help you in every area and in every way that I can. I have had nearly 100% success with every student that I've worked with. What about the "nearly" you might ask? We'll there was a case where a student ended up dropping out of the college because he found he didn't like the major he was in.Thank you for looking at my profile and I hope I hear from you soon!

We all speak a language which makes it common to all of us. This reflects the nature of language and the will or the need to communicate. Yet all the languages are not the same and, learning them can be something difficult but necessary for intercultural exchange to people in contact. I will be glad as a French near-native speaker, to help people achieve that goal.

Art Tutor • +8 Subjects

I am a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania (Bachelor of Arts degree in, Linguistics) which I attended on a National Merit Scholarship, and Long Island University (Master's degree in Library Science). Over the years, I have studied French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish, with varying degrees of success. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about handwriting, which is the subject I tutor most often. My passion for handwriting comes from the fact that I had great difficulties with this skill throughout my youth and young adulthood. My handwriting was illegible, painful, and extremely slow further, I could not even read cursive because of a variety of neurological difficulties which were later diagnosed as including dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyspraxia, and autism spectrum issues.During graduate school, I resolved to address my handwriting issues, which I did by independently researching the history and science of handwriting. I learned why so many people (with and without disabilities) have huge difficulties with conventional handwriting instruction, and developed competency as a calligrapher and as a user and teacher of better, simpler handwriting: employing techniques drawn from the italic method of handwriting, which was the method used in the earliest published handwriting textbooks.Ever since then, for the past several decades I have been teaching students of all ages and abilities how to improve their handwriting. Usually, I teach individually and in small groups; I have also taught large groups. (My largest class was a group of 250 MDs at a hospital which had me present a handwriting class at their annual meeting instead of the usual keynote speech.)The people to whom I teach handwriting include doctors, occupational therapists, students at the kindergarten through university levels (including special education students), and teachers and administrators at the elementary through university levels (including special education teachers and administrators).I am also the author of the book READ CURSIVE FAST, which teaches people to read cursive handwriting even if they do not write in cursive.Additionally. I tutor basic math and English (including English as a Second Language), as well as helping students of the various languages which I know.In my spare time, I enjoy reading science fiction and informative nonfiction, as well as a variety of crafts including calligraphy and loom knitting.

I have completed my Bachelor's degree in Physics from SUNY at Albany, and have performed research in an optics lab, having published a couple papers during that time. The coursework in physics is an extensive overview of many mathematical topics, including algebra, geometry, and calculus (multi-variable or vector). A strong intuition of maths and the language used to describe physical phenomena is something I have gained in my studies, and lends itself well to teaching these topics to others. In addition, I also teach the classical guitar privately and in several private schools in Upstate New York. I am in my fifth year of instruction, having earned my Associates degree in music performance for classical guitar. I am well-versed in music theory and jazz.
