Does Dayton MCAT Prep Cover All Sections of the Test?
Yes, Dayton MCAT prep can help you review the concepts in all sections of the test. The MCAT is a standardized, computer-based test. You will be tested on many different skills and concepts that you will need to succeed in the medical field. The sections of the MCAT are Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems, Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills, Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems, and Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior. Each of these sections will measure your abilities in a different area. Here, we will discuss each section of the MCAT in more detail, as well as general information you will want to know about the test itself. The score you receive on this test can help determine your admittance into a program, so you need to be as prepared as possible so that you can achieve your best score.
First, let's discuss the Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems section. You are allotted 95 minutes to answer 59 multiple-choice questions. These questions will either be passage-based or independent. Important concepts to know in this section are basic chemical and physical principles of living systems, the functions of the human body's tissues, organs, and organ systems; chemical and physical principles that make up the mechanisms that operate the human body, and how systems of the human body relate to the laws of physics. You will also be asked questions about chemical reactions and the periodic table. You should have learned these concepts in the subjects of chemistry, organic and inorganic chemistry, intro to physics, intro to biology, and basic biochemistry.
The Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills section is made up of 53 multiple-choice questions that are all related to passages you are provided. You must complete this section in 90 minutes. This section measures your skills in verbal reasoning, reading comprehension, and analysis. The passages in this section use information about the social sciences and humanities, but you will only need general knowledge about these disciplines in order to answer the questions correctly. You will need to be able to draw inferences from compositional elements, extrapolate and apply ideas from a passage to new contexts, and identify basic components of a text.
Next, the Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems section is also made up of passage-based and independent questions. There are 59 multiple-choice questions with which you must answer in 95 minutes. You will need to use scientific inquiry and reasoning to answer these questions. You will also need a solid understanding of living organisms and their unique processes, as well as the foundational concepts of biology and biochemistry.
The last section we will discuss is the Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior section. This section has the same time allotted and the same number of questions as the Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems section. An understanding of the correlations between a person's well-being, access to resources, and social stratification is essential. This section requires a good understanding of behavior and how it changes and impacts health. This section will also measure your understanding of the human and social issues present in medicine, as well as the skills you will need in order to effectively treat a diverse population. These concepts are covered in the introductory courses of psychology and sociology.
Finally, let's discuss the MCAT in general. This test is administered on computers in testing facilities all around the United States. The concepts that are covered in the sections of this test have all been provided by medical school faculty, students, and medical professionals and are considered to be essential to your success in the field of medicine. It is possible that you could come across some experimental questions in any of the sections of the test, but these are simply used to test possible future MCAT questions and are not scored. When you receive your scores, you will have 5 different scores. Each section is scored from 118-132, and those scores are combined to make up your total score. Total scores range from 472-528.
