I am fortunate; I get to do the best job in the world. While teaching is my second career, it was always what I wanted to do. When I graduated from college, I was offered a position with my college's admissions and marketing office, where I had been working to put myself through school. It was a tremendous opportunity, and launched an eighteen-year career helping high school students make important decisions about their futures, and navigate an often complex admissions and financial aid system. I loved working with students, being around bright, engaging people, and doing work that made a difference. But each time I walked through a high school to present a workshop on writing college essays or preparing for college interviews, I was reminded of how deeply I still wanted to be in a classroom. So I took the plunge, and now spend my days teaching social studies to great students at a great school. I have taught world history, American history, sociology, psychology, economics, and even developed a high school course in teaching for students seeking a career in education. I am passionate about understanding how the past has shaped the present, and helping students recognize their critical role in protecting and preserving democracy. In addition to teaching course curricula, I work with students on writing skills, standardized test preparation, and college essays, because all of these skills will help them reach their academic goals. As a teacher, I believe that it is critical to help students develop the ability to regulate their own learning, and implement meta-cognitive strategies that will serve them in college and beyond. When I'm not teaching, I am a mom to a high school sophomore, a long-distance mom to two college students, a gardener who grows lots of organic vegetables, and an avid reader of anything historical. I'm currently a student at the University of Alabama, working towards an undergraduate degree in math/statistics. Im also a part of the honors college at the University, the honors society Phi Eta Sigma, am participating in the new STEM program that allows me to work towards a MBA while completing my undergraduate degree. While finishing up high school I volunteered as a tutor for the AVID program at my school and throughout the past three years have tutored several classmates in a wide range of subjects. While I tutor in several subject areas, my favorite is math. I believe that education is crucial in the world that we live in today, but I also believe that each student is different and learns in different ways. I love showing students how what they are learning now will help them in life and I love finding new ways to teach material, especially if the first way of learning something is not working. Outside of class, I love color guard, writing, and just spending time with my friends, which normally leads to failing at board games.

As a student of life, education, both formal and informal, energizes me. On the formal front, I have my AA in Psychology, my BA in Criminology, and my MS in E-Commerce, and I have an equally diverse post-studies career history. My love of education has taken me to Southern California where I fed my love of law and learned about film. Next, I visited rural Florida with a stint at a Community Theatre. I've even spent a fair amount of time in the Hospitality Industry in Las Vegas, which, unexpectedly, introduced me to the construction industry. Through all of this, I have been a professional tutor for profit and pro bono. I believe education should be available to everyone regardless of age, sex, or socio-economic status, and I utilize learning identification to impart wisdom in the most effective way possible for each student's needs. I love that magical moment when the student "gets it." With experience in a broad range of subjects, mathematics is the most enjoyable for me, as well as LSAT Logic Games I'm the weirdo doing LSAT games at the tea house. My spare time finds me in nature for hikes and trail runs, and I can regularly be found on an obstacle course (Spartan, Tough Mudder, SISU, etc.) or doing an extreme endurance events either racing or supporting friends. They are currently getting their PhD in French. They have also been trained as a writing tutor in English, French and Spanish. Elsie grew up in France, and continued to learn languages in immersion programs, study abroad semesters, and fascinating courses through graduate school. They have worked with multilingual students in elementary schools, immersion academies, tutoring programs, and in university courses. I earned a bachelor's degree in psychology at the University of Maryland in May 2023. I would like to use my degree in a field that involves education, children, and studying child cognition. I have over 3 years of tutoring experience, and math has always been a passion of mine. Thus, I prefer to tutor children in math, but I am qualified to tutor in subjects such as Spanish, science, and English. I find it very rewarding to help students learn and overcome struggles they have in school. Their smiles alone make the work worthwhile to me. My past experience tutoring students includes working with children between the ages of 6 and 16. While tutoring, I try my best to keep the student engaged by including physical and virtual math games, physical learning tools, and other learning instruments designed to make learning more engaging for students. My tutoring style is pretty hands-on, but I also try to sit back and allow the student to think more deeply about the content and absorb the knowledge on their own. Outside of academia, I love to draw, especially with graphite, but I do occasionally use charcoal, colored pencils, and pens. I also love to exercise at the gym, but I especially enjoy hot yoga and pilates classes.
