I have been working with children in educational settings for almost half of my life and have worked with students in both formal and informal settings. I spent many years volunteering at a science themed summer camp and have also spent many hours assisting teachers in their classrooms. I have volunteered with both Junior Achievement and AVID, and participated in Odyssey of the Mind for six years, as both a team member and coach for younger students. I believe that it is important to start off simple and work towards solving more complex problems; without a thorough understanding of the basic concepts, it is difficult to master the more challenging concepts. I also believe that learning is something which should be enjoyed, and try to bring fun into the learning process whenever possible, while still ensuring that the concepts are understood. Not all students learn the same way, so I frequently employ techniques which utilize multiple methods of information delivery so that the material can be understood by all students, regardless of learning style.

I am currently a student at the University of Central Florida pursuing a degree in psychology with a minor in education. I enjoy math and science based subjects. In my free time, I enjoy drawing, painting, and crocheting.

Q & A

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session with a student, I would begin by asking the student what they hope to get out of tutoring. After setting some preliminary goals, I would discuss with the student what they feel are their strengths and weaknesses. After getting a general idea of what the student hopes to accomplish, I would use any relevant diagnostic tools to develop a better understanding of the student’s strengths and weaknesses, which I would then discuss with the student before developing the action plan for that student.
