The student worked on essays and the reading portion today while I observed. I emphasized the need for organization in her essays; though I haven't seen a sample of her writing. I suggested she come up with her topic sentences, then thesis statement, then write the paper, rather than trying to draw together a thesis statement after the essay is written (which a past teacher had suggested she do). She does really well with the reading passages, and only struggles when the passages get longer. She's going to watch for this on the exam, prioritizing sections that are shorter and/or easier to understand.

During this session, the student worked on gas laws and gas stoichiometry. We solved practice problems to determine the amount, volume, and partial pressure of gasses in solutions, in addition to completing homework for a lab assignment. This was all in preparation for an exam on 4/23.

The student and I continued with set theory, focusing on what is going to be on his quiz tomorrow, and I feel confident that he now understands all of the topics that will be on the quiz. Then we continued by beginning the next section of his work in basic probability.

The student and I worked on math tonight. First, we made flash cards with various formulas that she needs to review. Then we worked our way through the rest of a math test. Because it takes longer to go through the math tests, she will work on completing questions over the weekend so we can review the answers together later. Tuesday we will work on math, reading, and science.

We mostly reviewed situations in which to use t-tests and z-tests. However, as part of this, we familiarized ourselves with the given equations and tables used on the examination. We also reviewed the importance of understanding the contextual implications of statistics, specifically, the subtle differences between = and </> the impact they have on the null and alternate hypotheses.
