Tutoring review by Sonya in Lakeside, FL
Today, we covered the quantitative reasoning section. We went over the problems she missed on the pretest and began to compose a list of important formulas. In addition, we talked about strategies for approaching problems and the nature of the test as a logic test. We also discussed the different kinds of questions that might appear on the test. She is a smart student who picks up on concepts quickly. On the math section, she needs a review of concepts she just hasn't seen since high school as well as test strategies if she is to reach her goal of being in the 80th percentile.

Tutoring review by Stephen in Lakeside, FL
The student and I took a moment to get to know each other, then she began working on problems she had for homework. She told me she had trouble with basic math operations as she has become dependent on calculators and cannot use them in this class. I gave her a recommendation of a book she can use for extra practice. She and I worked on systems of equations today. She had trouble more than anything with identifying the variables and making equations from word problems, so I found some additional practice problems for her. I told her to name the variables first so that she knows what parts of the sentences are the variables. Then I advised her to translate the sentence from the English to math symbols. She did well with these, the only issue that came up while we were practicing was just arithmetic errors. We finished with linear programming. We went over what equations with x equal to a number and y equal to a number look like so that she can identify horizontal and vertical lines. I then showed her how to find points of intersection by finding two lines that intersect, then plugging in the x from one equation into the other that it intersects with and solving for x and y. This coordinate pair is the point of intersections. The student was clear on this idea and was able to find the other points of intersection after I demonstrated how to find the first one. I asked her in the future to try to email me with problems she is having trouble solving so that I will have them ready and we won't have to take as much time setting them up.

Tutoring review by Kathryn in Lakeside, FL
We reviewed a quiz the student had last week, which she did well on! She had only a few minor mistakes, and she was able to correct them and turn in the corrections for credit. Then, we went over the study guide for the test she has tomorrow. It covered the concepts from last week (properties of exponents, simplifying rational and radical expressions, etc.) as well as new topics she learned this week in class (graphing square root and cube root functions, determining their domain and range, and transforming the graphs based on changes to the equations).

Tutoring review by Heather in Lakeside, FL
Excellent first session with this student. We covered a ton of content for her semester final next week. She needed a lot of conceptual depth in terms of understanding why things work instead of just memorizing what the answer is. She is optimistic and ready to learn. She came with a lot of questions from her study guides and we were able to cover a wide range of topics including nomenclature, electronic configuration, electronegativity, Lewis dot structures, polarity, and intermolecular forces. She is going to study tomorrow and Friday in anticipation for our study session Saturday @11 where she will come ready with specific questions so we can focus on her needs.
