Hi everyone! I'm Iman, an MCAT tutor with over 3 years of STEM tutoring experience. I scored a 519 (96th percentile) on the MCAT, including a 130 in CARS (98th percentile), and will be starting medical school this July. I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania, where I developed a strong foundation in the biological and physical sciences alongside hands-on research and clinical experience. I bring a positive, supportive mindset to every session and focus on working WITH each student's learning style, not against it. I am currently working on my Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University, where I attained my undergraduate degree in Biochemistry. VCU is where I have held bioinorganic research positions as well as teaching positions. I acted as a teaching assistant in various chemistry and biology classes while studying and am currently an adjunct faculty teaching chemistry courses for the university. In addition to Varsity Tutors, I tutor for PCG education where I prepare students at J L Francis Elemetnary School for their mathematics SOLs. Throughout my different experiences with teaching and tutoring, I have found that each individual requires a different teaching style. Adjusting styles to accommodate different learning styles can be difficult at start, but overtime it helps the success of students to achieve their goals. I am most interested in improving the critical thinking and critical writing skills of students who will comprise the next generation of college graduates and working professionals. The ability to express oneself clearly through writing is an invaluable skill both within academia and the professional workforce. I believe it is my job to provide students with the necessary preparation and skills they will need to succeed in a college environment and beyond. When I am not tutoring, I enjoy reading fiction (with a special soft spot for sci-fi/fantasy), running and training for my next marathon, and experimenting with new recipes in my kitchen.

I am passionate about helping students of all ages learn challenging content. I am a National Board Certified teacher with more than 20 years of state certified classroom teaching experience. I have expertise working with elementary students as well as supporting the professional growth of aspiring teachers. I am a recent graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University, where I earned a Bachelors of Science in Biology. Throughout my three years of undergrad, I have been a preceptor for Cell Biology and Genetics. In addition, I was a supplemental instruction leader in CHEM 101 and CHEM 102. I am currently a Medical Scribe, but I will be attending VCOM for medical school starting Fall 2018.

I have spent my life teaching math, both as a classroom teacher and as a tutor, and I love it! My goal is always to make mathematics simple and understandable. I teach by asking questions, both to check for understanding and to allow the student to figure out the concept on his/her own. While my favorite topics are Statistics and Trigonometry, I love teaching all of Algebra too. I have taught both AP Statistics as well as IB SL. Nothing compares to seeing the look of understanding a math concept on a student's face! In addition, I have taught courses in, and tutored, SAT Prep for 35 years. While I do tutor both the math and Reading & Writing sections, I do believe that students can be helped more in the math section. Therefore, I choose to work with students who want to improve their math score more, but may still want some help with the Reading and Writing. Yes, the SAT has changed throughout the years but I have kept up with it and have seen more than 100 SAT tests. I am an expert in SAT test construction and offer many problem-solving strategies for success on the SAT test.

I am an avid enthusiast for following your passions, no matter what they are. I enjoy teaching and spending time with others. I have a great vast amount of experience tutoring other peers, students, children, etc. I hope that I can help others reach their goals in learning! I am a graduate of Georgetown University, holding a Master of Public Policy, a top 10 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) program nationally. Originally from China, I am now based in the US and have worked with researchers, NGOs, and international organizations to solve real-world problems. My subjects include GRE Quantitative, GRE, Math, Coding and Programming, and Chinese. Due to my practical experience, I believe that the most effective way to study is "learning by doing." I will create real-world scenarios and help students understand how to leverage their skills, thereby gaining a sense of accomplishment. Games, debates, and other interactive activities are also important for students to like the subject and improve their grades. I am confident that I have the capability and patience to be an amazing tutor. My Master's degree is data-heavy, and I accepted the rigorous training in advanced data analytics, statistical modeling, and programming. I was also a tutor for middle school students in Science and Math, meaning I can not only understand the difficult jargon, but also explain it in plain language. While pursuing my degree, I was a Chinese teaching assistant for undergraduates. By designing the curriculum independently, I helped students understand Chinese society from the economy, diplomacy, and family transformation. I am looking forward to meeting you all!
