I am currently working on my Master's degree in Applied Linguistics. Ultimately, I want to teach college level Linguistics, but I have been tutoring for a long time. I enjoy teaching and helping people to better understand things.

I'm super passionate about giving students the space and encouragement to learn using the skills they already have. I have worked in Pre-K through 12th Grade schools as a Teacher, Mentor, and Counselor. I'm even a student currently at the University of Pennsylvania getting a Masters of Social Work.I tutor Writing, Reading, English, Spanish, (and my personal fave) Math.I love tutoring math because I struggled with math as a middle schooler until I spent time with some amazing tutors who were patient and helped me practice the skills I needed to be successful.Outside of tutoring, I love listening to music, trying to learn new dances, and cooking interesting recipes.
I have passionately pursued the application of sciences and math over my 25+ year career. I am a firm believer in promoting professional development and learning in all those around you, and being prepared to learn at the same time. Many of my examples will draw on my history in aquariums, water quality and water purification and relate to environmental stewardship and conservation biology.
As an English teacher, creating a sense of excitement in reading and writing is what I wanted students to always strive for in their academic lives. Literature and composition played an essential role in my life, and I hope students will feel the same as they explore their imagination and curiosity. When a student tells me they just read ".........." and loved it, I feel inspired by them and encourage them to continue learning forever.

I am an educator with experience at the public school, community college and university level. A few years ago I decided to focus solely on elementary, middle, and high school students. I substitute teach about 90% of the school calendar year and I have been a tutor (in home and online). In fact, substitute teaching is a lot like being a tutor. Beyond subject matter content, teaching is always about the self-esteem of the student. Learning is a lifelong process. Each teaching situation is an opportunity to influence positively how a student sees him or herself as a learner. Learning takes place over the course of a school year, semester, quarter, week, or in a five minute time frame (such as with a substitute teacher). The math problem or the causes of the American Revolution may be what the student is learning but the context of the situation is always making learning a positive experience for the student.
I grew up speaking Spanish, then I studied it from 6th grade until the end of my college years. I think helping students improve or accelerate their learning is a wonderful gift. I believe that through extra practice and encouragement knowledge can be gained and then students can independently apply what they have learned in various areas.
I heard someone say that everyone starts out liking math. But they meet that one math teacher or class or even a problem that intimidates them, possibly embarrasses them. And they build a wall and find it hard to continue liking math. I want to show them an easier way to understand the concepts; I want people to like math.
I love helping kids learn in a way that feels fun, encouraging, and stress-free. I'm patient, supportive, and enjoy building confidence while helping students grow at their own pace. My goal is to create a positive environment where kids feel comfortable asking questions, learning new skills, and celebrating their progress.
Ever since my childhood, I have always loved teaching and learning. I especially love learning about other cultures and people. When I found out that I could do both of these at the same time, I was amazed. It is for that reason that I became a teacher. The world is full of diversity both linguistic and cultural. This is what makes us beautiful while at the same time what makes us unique. I am a Spanish Teacher and I have been teaching Spanish almost all of my life to friends, co-workers, and classmates. After I finished my Master's degree, I was given the privilege to teach Spanish as a profession. I have taught Spanish to students of many different walks of life, nationalities, and cultural backgrounds from beginner to advanced levels. I not only consider myself a teacher but an advocate for student learning. I have studied and learned many other languages and continue to do so. I also have a strong theoretical background in culture as well as communication. These aspects have helped me to better understand how a language is acquired and some best practices to assist in the process. Also, I believe that these aspects allow me to easily relate to students when referring to expectations and alleviating some of the frustrations that come with learning a new language. One of my personal teaching goals is to be an advocate and an important part of the students' learning experience in order to ensure their success and keep them motivated to learn. I aim to make every language learning experience fun, interactive, and memorable.
I am a graduate of Grand Valley State University and I obtained my degree in Allied Health Sciences. Currently, I am attending Old Dominion University to complete my master's degree in biology with an emphasis in microbiology/immunology. I have much experience in the education field beginning with my time as a preschool teacher for 1 year. Additionally, upon my undergraduate graduation, I worked as a full-time substitute teacher for grades K-8. I have experience teaching all subjects in K-8 classrooms. I am most passionate about tutoring science, especially biology, as this is the field I have spent most of my time in. I believe all students have the potential to succeed if they are putting in their best effort and maintaining a positive attitude throughout the process. Therefore, I always encourage my students to never say negative remarks regarding their learning to avoid dejection feelings of insecurity. I would consider myself a life-long learner as I am always on a quest to discover new information and I hope to instill a love of learning onto others.
My name is Virginia, and I am a registered nurse currently working on my Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree. I love teaching and helping others reach their full potential. I believe that every student is capable of growth when given the right support, clear explanations, and a learning environment where they feel comfortable asking questions. In English tutoring, I focus on building both skill and confidence by meeting students at their current level to develop step by step.
I am passionate about helping students because I want to empower students and provide an opportunity for them to feel prepared for college which will lead to eventually become a working professional. I want to be able to give back and help others with their dreams, goals, and visions. I previously worked as a tutor at ForKids in Norfolk, Virginia, as a teacher at Rainbow Station in Glen Allen, Virginia, and I have worked in higher education in the career services department helping students with resume and cover letter writing. I received my undergraduate degree from Old Dominion University, my first masters degree is in academic advising from Kansas State University and I will receive my second masters degree in human resources management from the University of Richmond in May 2017. I tutor college essays, resume writing, cover letter writing, mock interviews, etc. These are my favorite because I am knowledge in those areas and I want to eventually become the director of career services at an institution of higher education. My teaching philosophy is that I cannot do my job, unless you are successful. I will do everything in my power to make sure my students are satisfied with their work and have the tools that they need to be successful after our session has ended. Outside of tutoring I love to travel, I love trying local restaurants, and I love to read thriller/mystery and self-help books.
I am really passionate about our youth and I consider it a privilege to help them expand their knowledge. I love watching students learn; the greatest experience is when an educator actually sees the student learn and grasp a concept...nothing is more rewarding.
I am a graduate of Old Dominion University with two Bachelors, one in Art History and the other in History. In June of 2022, I graduated Norwich University with my Masters in World History. Teaching is my passion and I fully believe that all students have the capability to succeed, and it is my goal as a tutor to foster self-confidence and success in every student. Therefore, my philosophy is to never give up on a student, to be fully dedicated to their needs and their education, and to always make sure they always strive for their best to develop self-confidence and success. When I tutor, I like to challenge my students because I see their capabilities. If needed, I will also assist students with study habits, time management skills, and organization as we progress through our sessions. I was a Spanish Tutor and an AVID tutor, and it was a rewarding experience to see students succeed and thrive. I hope to impart a small passion for history to every student I tutor. My passion for history is mostly in ancient and prehistory, and I hope someday that I will get the opportunity to travel to Europe to visit ancient sites and see cave paintings.
Teacher with seven years of STEM experience. I am excited to bring my skills and experience to Varsity Tutors. I am passionate about STEM curriculum and helping students come to love learning!
Teaching is one of my greatest passions. It is the way we ensure that the knowledge we worked so hard to gain is not lost to future generations. At this point, I have been teaching and tutoring for several years, and I love it now more than ever. My first teaching experience was teaching Electricity and Magnetism Physics, Nuclear Reactor Physics, and Thermodynamics to new nuclear power plant operators in the US Navy earning the certification of "Master Training Specialist." When earning my BS in Public Health and Epidemiology and completing my pre-medical coursework, I was often asked by my peers how I studied because I seemed to have a great understanding of the material. In helping my peers in my study groups, I began to realize a recurring theme - they didn't know how to approach learning in the Sciences. As a result, I found a niche and a passion in teaching in the science modalities. Over the course of the next couple of years, I was a TA in Organic Chemistry, and I was employed by the university to tutor students in Physics, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biology and Biochemistry. Now, I am a Doctor of Medicine candidate at Harvard Medical School, and I tutor 1st year medical students in Anatomy. I also write the clinical curriculum and teach for the Harvard Health Professions Recruitment and Enrichment Program (HMS HPREP), which teaches the science of the human body to high school children who are interested in pursuing careers in medicine. I think my greatest tutoring quality is that I always meet a student where he or she is and I do not go into a tutoring session with any preconceived notions about a current level of understanding. I am there to figure out where the difficulty in learning stems from and to find creative ways to help the student learn to problem solve in the context of his or her specific subject so that he or she may bridge that gap for themselves in the future. In the past, I have been very successful in these endeavors, which has and continues to be one of the most personally rewarding things I engage in. I hope that I will continue this by helping you achieve your learning goals so that we can continue to strengthen the fund of knowledge for the future.

I believe that all students can learn and be successful with the appropriate learning environment and strategies in place. I have experience and training in the Orton Gillingham method of reading instruction. I have years of experience teaching students with learning disabilities, communication difficulties, and other areas requiring specialized instruction. My passion is helping students meet their goals and gain confidence and independence.
For more than 20 years my supreme goal has been to be a good reader, an active listener, a decent writer and an articulate speaker. Also, I have written as a staff writer for a newspaper in a national news syndicate, and I have two masters degree, one in Special Education from Old Dominion University and one in Journalism from the University of Oregon. Along with many other college students and some graduate students, I won a national internship competition through the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund as a copy-editor for the Grand Forks Herald in North Dakota. My favorite study right now is Spanish, in which I write my near daily diary and about which I always learn more around the subjunctive, one of my favorite features in languages, of which I have received formal instruction in the Fijian language, Spanish, Hindustani, Hebrew and Arabic, 2 years in Spanish and 2 years in Arabic. I have also used informal instruction in German and Italian when I traveled in Europe. My first experience in teaching was as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the South Pacific at a 4-year middle school, and I have taught as a teacher assistant often times one-on-one with students on the autism spectrum and done that work for almost 20 years, many of my students being non-verbal and some with orthopedic complications. One of my favorite students responded quite well to my singing as we walked city streets to and from vocational assignments
