I am a sociology professor with well over two decades of fulltime higher education experience. I was born and raised in the Upper Midwest, 13th of 14 children in a family of educators going back several generations. I graduated from Northland College of Wisconsin with a Sociology major and a minor in Native American Studies. I completed a doctorate in Sociology at Virginia Tech 6-1/2 years later. The primary focus in my professional life has been teaching. As a sociology professor, I have worked with students to help them master the major concepts and knowledge of the field and to draw out the importance of what they are learning for their lives as individuals and members of the community. I have taught in a wide variety of learning environments and have demonstrated an ability to work effectively with diverse student populations.I have a very broad teaching background that includes most areas of sociology and a few related social science areas. I have taught Introductory Sociology, Racial and Ethnic Minority Groups, Social Theory, Research Methods, Sociology of the Family, Medical Sociology, Native American Cultures, Contemporary Cultural Issues, Deviance and Criminology, Social Welfare Issues and Policy, Sociology of Religion, Social Problems, Freshman Seminar and many others.I recognise the tremendous value in developing writing skills and acquiring a general mastery of the English language. At Virginia Tech, I participated in the first project of its kind nationally to bring essay writing into very large freshman general education classes; in our case, Introductory Sociology. As a professor, I have been involved in Writing Across the Curriculum and have made writing an important component of my sociology classes.

I'm an energetic, caring, and experienced science teacher with 28 years of working with middle school students, and I truly love helping them grow in confidence and understanding. I know that science can sometimes feel confusing or overwhelming, so my goal is to make it clear, relatable, and even fun. I support students in all areas of middle school science, including physics, chemistry, ecology, and Earth science topics like weather and space. In our sessions, I use simple explanations and real-life examples, like connecting forces to everyday situations or exploring ecosystems and weather patterns in ways that make sense to students. I'm also state certified in Engineering and Technology Education in South Carolina, and I bring a hands-on, encouraging approach to every lesson. I guide students to think like scientists by asking questions, exploring ideas, and building confidence step by step. Most importantly, I create a positive, supportive space where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes as they learn. I want every student to feel successful and to leave each session feeling more confident than when they started.
Hi there! My name is Madeleine and I am currently pursuing a PHd in Geophysics; more specifically remotes sensing in an archaeological context. Much of what I study involves physical science and advanced math, so my background in these subjects is very strong. I also used to work as a peer tutor for Virginia Tech during my undergrad with level 3 CRLA certifications, which has provided me with a lot of experience tutoring in these subjects as well.I aim to help students not just learn about a topic of study, but also how to problem solve so that they eventually no longer require my services.I look forward to helping you!
They call me a detective! I am a lifelong learner and natural born teacher. My teaching style is empowering, fun, and inquisitive. Strong suits: massage therapy, math, reading, language, writing, professional exams. Allow me to help you excel and connect the dots in all subject areas.
I am a student of Architecture completing my Bachelor's degree at Virginia Tech. For as long as I can remember I have loved helping younger students master subjects I enjoy. One of my greatest pleasures is helping find that special something in the topic at hand that ignites a passion in the student's eyes, where they gain a connection with the material that will nourish their study for years to come. Teaching math and music have always been strong points for me, but language is my greatest focus. Having self-taught Spanish in high school, I'm bilingual and have had the privilege of volunteering on multiple occasions as a translator for groups traveling to Latin America. When it comes to the SATs, a lot of students become incredibly overwhelmed, but from my experience, with some help and effective practice, anyone can navigate them successfully, and to the best of their ability. Whenever I'm free and the weather's good, all I need is a rugged trail or a soccer ball and some competition to challenge me. However, when Pittsburgh is its dreary, rainy self, you can find me in front of a good book or blank canvas accompanied by a warm cup of tea.
I am currently pursuing a degree in Chemical Engineering and Spanish at Virginia Tech. I have a strong academic record in my fields. I enjoy sharing knowledge and helping others overcome learning challenges. Through previous tutoring, I have developed excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills. I am comfortable using online learning technologies and am committed to providing engaging, supportive lessons that help students reach their full potential.
I am proficient in calculus and algebra, and am well versed in many other areas of mathematics. This is a direct result of good teaching, hard work and dedication. I hope to pass on some of the insights that I have gained through my education and work experience. I am patient, friendly and approachable. I can break down complex problems and explain them in layman's terms. I have been tutoring part time for 6 years now and enjoy it very much.Currently I am working towards a masters degree in electrical and computer engineering. In my spare time, I like to build guitar amplifiers and play guitar for fun."Math is cool I use it every day. When I work and even when I play. I've got problems to be solved, in my home and at school. I like it when there's math involved 'cause math is cool!"
Hi! I'm Fisher. I am from Boston, Massachusetts, currently studying Aerospace Engineering at Virginia Tech. I scored a 5 on the AP BC Calculus exam, a 4 on AP Physics 1, and have excelled in all math-related courses. I graduated from Arlington High School with a 3.99 GPA. I focus on problem-based learning rather than lectures, as I've found that to be the most effective way to learn in my experience. I consider myself to be very laid back, as I understand everyone is at different levels of understanding. I like being in nature, watching/playing sports, and playing piano. I look forward to working with you!
I lived and worked in Germany for 20 years. I married a German man, and we had 3 beautiful children in Frankfurt. I worked for well known German corporations and had the wonderful opportunity to live and work within the German culture and language. I worked with Berlitz language school for a few years and learned valuable teaching skills specifically designed to teach students of all ages to learn a second language. I loved that job!! It provided me a rich experience that I was then able to bring with me into following companies. Would like the opportunity to share that once again.
I am an incoming Aerospace Engineering sophomore at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. I am seeking a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering with the hope of continuing my education as a Master of Science prospect. I've gained tutoring experience during my senior year of high school as a member of the National Honors Society. I was provided various opportunities to teach a broad range of K-12 subjects and expedite students' problem-solving approaches. Although, my expertise is more STEM-oriented towards engineering fundamentals, calculus, physics, and various STEM-related topics. I've been proven flexible to tutor various subjects while integrating creative lessons for greater understanding. I've initiated a public speaking program called "Eloquence Speaking Program" to help students overcome the universal fear of publicly speaking and develop their interpersonal competencies. I loved working with students of all ages, because everyone is unique in their own way. My goal is to reinforce students' strengths and address their weaknesses. Education is a broad spectrum, and there shouldn't be one way of developing an understanding for a certain subject. I believe each student should be accommodated and taught differently to best reap the benefits.
I know what it is to struggle academically through personal experience I truly believe that it just takes a little bit of practice, as well as a new teaching perspective. I use this experience to better help my students reach their educational goals.
I just graduated from Virginia Tech in May of 2015 with a bachelor's of science in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research. I was accepted into a PhD program at UC Berkeley in the same field with one of the most prestigious fellowships given to entering doctoral students. After moving to Berkeley and spending a few months in the program, I decided to take a leave and re-evaluate what I would like to do moving forward. The culture of the department was very cold, competitive, and un-supportive, and they only really valued my math skills rather than all of the other aspects of my identity. I have many other passions, including dance, theatre, drawing, teaching, cooking, and my work as an activist is very important to me. During my leave from school, I will be pursuing those passions while I decide where to go next.I started tutoring in high school as a swim instructor and Spanish tutor. Then, in college, I really found my love for teaching. For my last two years, I tutored individuals and well as groups and classes in theoretical statistics, probabilistic operations research, and statistical quality control. The feedback I got from those experiences was incredible and many students told me how much more confident in the material they were, how much easier the material seemed, and how grateful they were that they would now get through the class successfully. I had so much success as a tutor in college that a lady who worked in the main office of my department contacted me for algebra tutoring sessions because she was going back to school to get a degree, and she ended up getting an A in the class!I am qualified to tutor all levels of algebra and calculus because I use these subjects in my studies on a daily basis. I have gone far beyond high school level in both subjects; taking classes like multi-variable calculus and abstract linear algebra. When I was in high school, I got the highest possible grade (5) on the AP Calculus AB exam, and I was awarded the department of mathematics award given to only one student in my graduating class. I graduated salutatorian. I am young and fresh out of college so I can relate to your student and the material is fresh in my mind! I am very outgoing and like to make my sessions as fun and enjoyable as possible.
I have been teaching physics for the last 2 years. My goal is to help you do the best that you can in your classes. I have been in your shoes and I know the struggle. Together, I believe we can work through any difficulties you might have.
I'm passionate about helping students build strong academic foundations through personalized, confidence-boosting instruction. With degrees in Psychology and Human Development, 8 years of Marine Corps experience, and hands-on work with special needs learners, I adapt lessons to fit each student's learning style. My approach is meeting students where they are. My goal is to create independent thinkers who enjoy learning and achieve long-term success.
I struggled with learning disabilities though out school and understand how defeated students can feel. Mathematics requires multiple skills. The challenge for me, as the tutor, is to help the student learn in a way that works best for them and to support them in areas of difficulty. Watching students gain confidence in themselves and their abilities is the reason I tutor. I enjoy figuring out what each student needs and an approach that works for them.I have experience teaching both children and adults. I have done substitute teaching with all age levels. I was the youth coordinator for a teen youth group and tutored adults at Community College of Philadelphia. I am also the mother of three school aged children and received a degree in Forestry and Wildlife from Virginia Tech. More recently, I have completed the required course work for an Associates Degree in education from Camden County College. I am comfortable tutoring basic math skills, up through Algebra.
I aim to teach K-8 students Spanish, to expand their cultural knowledge and to broaden their ability to be linguistically versatile. I can also teach Spanish speakers how to improve their English speaking, writing and reading skills.
I have a degree in Economics from Virginia Tech. I first started tutoring when I was in college at Virginia Tech with elementary aged students. I worked with them in their after school program through my service organization. Later on while still in college I began to mentor high school students through the Upward Bound program which helps students in their goal to be accepted in to college. I would meet with my assigned high school students once a month in order to answer any questions they might have and to continue their individual progression during their junior and senior years of high school as well as assist in their application process for college. Finally, after achieving an A in Micro Economic Theory I was asked to tutor fellow college students in Economics by my professor, which I agreed to do during my Senior year in college. I have plenty of experience helping students from elementary school right through to college students. While in college I also coached a middle school recreational basketball team in local Christiansburg, VA. It was a great experience and I was able to teach the student athletes a great deal about the game of basketball. I also stepped up to help coach The Woodland Park travel middle school team in 2013 - 2014 when my town was in need of assistant coaches. I have learned a great deal through these experiences including how to motivate and get the best out of student athletes on the court.I like to golf, play tennis, hike, and be outdoors in my spare time. I am currently working full time at North Jersey Media Group and will be starting my second degree in Accounting this fall at Ramapo College.
I just received my PhD in Geospatial and Environmental Analysis from Virginia Tech. My undergraduate degree was in Biology and Geography. Since graduation, I work as a scientist in environmental conservation. During grad school, I worked as a teaching assistant for college level geography and forestry courses. I was also a guest teacher in a middle school science class as part of a science literacy fellowship and enjoyed creating innovative lesson plans to engage students beyond a lecture hall. I am a firm believer in education, believing it to be absolutely necessary for fostering the next generation of informed critical thinkers. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about Ecology, Biology and Environmental Science. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time outdoors, hiking, rock climbing, biking and gardening.
I am a graduate of Virginia Tech with degrees in Economics and Psychology. I have a passion for learning - whether it entails academics or understanding more about the people around me - and I believe that this passion drives me to help others learn as well. While I realize that not everyone will share my natural enthusiasm for economics, psychology, or history, I am confident that I can utilize my knowledge and love of these subjects to bring them to you in a manner that is accessible, engaging, and stress-free.
I am and always have been an English person I love to read, I love to write, I love words, and I love understanding the infinite ways language can work in our world. I majored in English in college (Virginia Tech), with a specialty in Creative Writing, completing my degree in three years and graduating summa cum laude. During my time there, I won several writing contests and awards for my poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. I'm currently preparing myself to go to grad school for a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, and so I continue to spend much of my spare time reading, writing, and studying.I've taught in various contexts, although my first teaching experience was working as a swim instructor a job I had all through high school and part of college. I also worked for a summer league swim team during college, coaching a team of about 200, with swimmers aged three to eighteen. That same summer, I worked as a private tutor for two elementary school students, tutoring them in Math and Spanish. After graduating, I obtained a TEFL certification and moved to South Korea, where I worked as an ESL teacher. I worked with students aged six to fourteen, some of whom were complete beginners to English, and some of whom were almost fluent and preparing to take the TOEFL exam. In the ESL field, I have experience teaching reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Given my academic and work background, I feel comfortable teaching to standardized tests as well as for general academic purposes (such as reading comprehension or essay writing). From a teaching perspective, I believe strongly that no two people learn the same way, and that it's my job as the teacher to tailor my teaching approach to fit the student's needs. In keeping with that, I believe it's important to get know my students so that I'm able to teach them to the best of my ability. I've found that people learn best when the topic is of interest, and I think it's always possible to individualize a lesson if you truly know your student. From my experiences working with young children as well as with older students, the most effective approach is striking the balance between structure/hard work and fun, as the second is often a motivator for the first. I like to laugh hard and often, and I like for my students to laugh as well!On a personal level, I love to have adventures. Anything I haven't done before is game I especially enjoy trying new restaurants and coffee shops with my friends. Besides eating my way through Richmond, I also go to a lot of concerts; I'll listen to anything, but I would say my musical roots are definitely of the rock variety! I'm a fan of sunshine, trampolines, and all things art. Finally, I love to travel, having recently returned from a gap year during which I traveled solo through the U.S. and parts of Latin America.
I am a Physics and Mathematics double major with extensive experience tutoring students at both the high school and undergraduate levels. My academic background spans advanced coursework in calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, abstract algebra, classical mechanics, electricity and magnetism, and modern physics. I work comfortably across the full high school curriculum, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Precalculus, AP Calculus, and AP Physics as well as college-level math and physics courses. What sets my tutoring apart is not just subject mastery, but the ability to translate complex ideas into clear, intuitive explanations. I focus on building strong conceptual foundations first, then reinforcing them with problem-solving strategies that are efficient, rigorous, and adaptable to exams. Whether a student is struggling to keep up, aiming to raise their grade, or preparing for competitive exams, I tailor each session to their goals and learning style. I emphasize logical thinking, pattern recognition, and first-principles reasoning, skills that empower students to approach unfamiliar problems with confidence rather than memorization. My goal is not simply to help students complete assignments, but to help them understand why the mathematics or physics works, so they can succeed independently long after our sessions end. I bring patience, structure, and high standards to every lesson, and I genuinely enjoy helping students unlock subjects that often feel intimidating. With the right guidance, math and physics become not obstacles, but powerful tools, and I take pride in helping students discover that for themselves.
Hey, I'm Tyler! I'm a senior at Virginia Tech studying finance and international business. I currently hold a 3.81 GPA and can't wait to help you succeed in your classes!
I am passionate about helping students learn math and believe that anyone willing to put in the time and effort can be successful at it. I recently received my BS in Statistics from Virginia Tech, where I spent a lot of time tutoring students in various math and statistics classes. I got my MS in Statistics from the University of Illinois where I worked as a TA for different stats classes. Currently I tutor, do freelance data analysis and work at a math learning center.
I just graduated from veterinary school and am ready to help you learn! I got a degree in animal science from Virginia Tech, a master's in animal biotechnology and biomedical science from the University of Massachusetts, and attended veterinary school at Kansas State University. I have worked with students from age 2-18, and have studied a lot with other people during my college education. This has really given me insight as to how to study -- how to study a large volume of information in a short time frame, how to retain that information, and how different people learn that information. I would be a good tutor for the VTNE, veterinary-related subjects, and can also assist with other biological science subjects.
I have 18 years of experience teaching Math and Statistics at the college level. I was involved in the Gateway toCollege Program in which we helped students who were struggling to finish high school earn a High School diploma, as well as earn college credits toward a higher level degree. I have also tutored math within the community to all age groups, and am currently a Guest Teacher in our school district to all age levels. I have coached girls sports for the past 18 years, coaching my daughter's lacrosse and field hockey teams from third grade to high school. My passion is to help kids learn and achieve at the highest level possible. I have always tried to make math less "scary" to those students who struggle and to help them to overcome any math anxiety they have. When I teach, I allow the students to try to come to an "Aha!" moment with productive struggle, but step in when help is needed.
I like helping people understand chemistry. I have Bachelor's and Master's degrees in chemistry. I have 1 year of experience peer tutoring other undergraduate students in chemistry, calculus, and biology while at Penn State, and I have 3 years of experience teaching ochem labs as a graduate student while at Virginia tech. Teaching included pre-lab lecture, supervision of students working in lab, grading student's assignments, and helping students understand course material outside of class. My time working with students has helped me understand how different individuals attempt to learn complex material differently and try to find new ways to help them understand chemistry and other complex topics.

I am a Virginia native who has recently relocated to Cincinnati after a year spent abroad in Edinburgh, Scotland. I received my BA in English Literature from Virginia Tech. (GO HOKIES!) I have completed my Master's Degree at the University of Edinburgh. I wrote my dissertation on early modern South Asian and Islamic art. I love to read, write, sketch, and check out museums in my spare time.
"Believe you can and you're halfway there." -Theodore Roosevelt.Belief in one's self is needed to perform well in any area of life along with practice, patience, and perseverance. These virtues allow individuals to rise to any challenge and to perform at their highest potential. I enjoy inspiring students to be their best and to show them learning can be fun. Watching students gain confidence and become independent learners is my greatest reward as a teacher.
I have been working with children from preschool through high school for 25 years and still love to see the light bulb go off when a student understands a difficult concept. Following my graduation from Virginia Tech where I obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Management, Housing, and Family Development (now called Consumer Science), I worked in administration until I had children. Then just a few years after, I became a full-time mom, I began my home-schooling adventure where I have taught, ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Toward the end of my home-schooling career (or the last 7 or so years), I joined a homeschool co-op and volunteered teaching wherever needed. Those classes have included elementary and middle school math; elementary, middle, and high school science; and high school finance. Since my youngest graduated from high school, I have discovered how fun it is to teach online. Since early 2020, I have been teaching ESL and homeschool enrichment classes through various platforms including ZebraEnglish, Cambly Kids, and Outschool. I have to say my favorite subjects to teach/tutor are early English skills (ELA and ESL) and math skills up to and including Algebra. Someday I'd like to explore the possibility of tutoring test prep classes from middle elementary through high school. As a retired home educator, that is where I feel a comprehensive review is greatly needed. I love to see students succeed. When I am not teaching, I enjoy my growing family (four grandchildren), reading, crocheting, and learning how better use the Google Workplace in my classroom.
I am physics major from Virginia Tech, class of 2015. I have been involved with sports for my whole life and am really into weight lifting and playing basketball. While studying at Virginia Tech, I have volunteered with Special Olympics, the American Cancer Society, Alzheimer's Association, and various other service initiatives. During the Summer of 2013, I studied Irish politics and culture at Queen's University Belfast on a scholarship from the Fulbright Commission. My favorite subjects to tutor are physics and calculus. I am familiar with the struggles that students often have in understanding a topic and am able to diagnose how much explanation is needed in order to help the student understand it in their own way. To me, being able to say it in your own words is the most important part of internalizing the subject.
I am a nationally certified vascular surgery physician assistant. I received my masters in medical science from Arcadia University. I attended Virginia Tech for my bachelors in biological sciences with a minor in chemistry where I graduated with honors. I started tutoring when I was in high school, which showed me how much I loved helping others succeed academically! I was a TA for general chemistry for 3 out of 4 years during my undergrad. I've tutored many students of all different types of learning styles throughout my academic career. I have been very successful in improving not just all of my students grades, but also their comprehension of the topics. I pride myself on developing good rapport with my students, allowing us to work as a team. Im very passionate about medical science, and I love helping students break down these difficult subjects!
Hello! I recently completed my BA in Economics with a minor in Mathematics from Virginia Tech. On my downtime, I tutor math, and I have experience tutoring pre-algebra to calculus and beyond. I also tutor for the SAT/ACT/GRE. My hobbies include playing soccer, hiking, and reading; and from time to time, I dabble in learning the piano, although I am not very good at it. Looking forward to working with you!
I graduated from Virginia Tech in 2014 with a B.Sc. in Wildlife Science and a minor in theater. Through my major's professional society, I taught in Virginia schools at a variety of age levels, from elementary to high school. All lesson plans I created (in subjects like geology, oceanography, evolution, etc.) adhered to "Standards Of Learning" set by the state of Virginia. Since graduating I have been an interpretive naturalist at Croydon Creek Nature Center in Rockville, MD, a teaching fellow at the New York Aquarium in Brooklyn, NY, and now I work within the Education Department at the American Museum of Natural History in Manhattan, NY. Given my background in the natural sciences, my favorite subjects to teach include environmental science, ecology, and biology. What I love about teaching is making seemingly difficult concepts easy to comprehend by applying them to real world scenarios. I firmly believe that all students can thrive when lessons are tailored to their learning styles. When my students succeed, I succeed. In my spare time I enjoy hiking, wildlife watching, and a good sci-fi movie.
I love to be helpful to people, and I love to help students improve their performance in classes and on tests. I have an excellent track record of strong performances in graded classes and on standardized tests. I am confident that I can help any student take their performance to the next level in any of several academic subject areas, especially math and chemistry, and on standardized tests.
I graduated from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in the Fall of 2019 with a Bachelor's of Science in Computer Engineering. I am also currently studying at the University of Arizona pursuing a Master's of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering. In addition to my studies, I am currently employed full time as a systems engineer for General Dynamics Mission Systems. Throughout my studies and professional career, I have developed a passion for helping motivate and teach those around me, and by tutoring I get to exercise that passion. It is incredibly fulfilling and important to me to be a resource for anyone I may be able to help become the best they can be. While working with anyone I greatly value getting to know one another as individuals to better understand motivations, strengths, areas for improvement, and learning styles to be able to find the best path to success. In terms of teaching, I specialize in computer science and computer engineering subjects. I am well versed in subject stemming from high level programming to low level logic and circuit design. I am also experienced with supporting STEM subjects such as mathematics, physics, and electronics. Outside of the scholastic world and my workplace, I enjoy spending time playing videogames, woodworking, exploring the outdoors, and generally learning about and exploring the world around me.
Recent graduate from Virginia Tech with a Bachelors in Science. I recently received my J.D. from the Charleston School of Law. Prior to law school, I attended Virginia Tech where I received my Bachelor of Science in Finance. While in law school, I was a member of Resolved Law Review where we focused on scholarly articles pertaining to alternative dispute resolution. I also focused my upper-level studies around business law and taxation. Throughout my schooling I was a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters where I tutored students of all grade levels. I have experience tutoring Essay Composition and Grammatical Editing, Economics, LSAT Prep, and multiple other topics. My hobbies include reading, fishing, swimming, and anything else on the water.
I am a graduate of Virginia Tech and did my residency, internship and fellowship at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. There I received my doctorate in Clinical Psychology/Neuropsychology. Since leaving Vanderbilt, where I was a co-investigator for several medications to treat Alzheimer's and other dementia etiologies, I have worked as a private practicing Neuropsychologist and have been a college professor in Psychology at the graduate and undergraduate level. I have found in my tutoring, mentoring and teaching that professional practice and academic work provide a real-world application context to the information my students are learning. Learning facts that presented with contemporary applications "sticks" far better than simple memorization; even the most basic and seemingly mundane information is applicable in real-life. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, working on and riding motorcycles, and enjoy online gaming.
