Hi, I am excited to work with you!I believe in student-centered learning and helping learners find intrinsic motivation.I love to help students enjoy learning, find success, explore their interests, and become life-long learners.I also believe in the importance of choice, gearing lessons towards a learner's interest and curiosity, and in fostering a love of learning.I work hard to help children and adults meet their challenges in a safe, supportive environment.I started teaching English in 2003. I was a middle and high school English teacher in brick and mortar classrooms for nine years before transitioning to homeschooling and online teaching. I've now worked with students online for over nine years and I love it. It's wonderful that we are able to meet goals, build relationships, and learn a lot no matter where in the world we log in from. Many of the students I have taught have dyslexia and other learning differences. My classes help students build confidence and interest, as well as skills.

I have been teaching for 24 years and enjoy working with students and their parents. I went to Radford University for both my undergraduate and graduate degrees. My undergraduate degree is in K-8 Education. My graduate degree is in PreK-12 Special Education. I have worked as both a general education teacher and special education teacher.
Hi, I'm Kayla! My tutoring style focuses on encouragement, flexibility, and building confidence at your pace. I believe students learn best when they feel comfortable asking questions, exploring ideas, and progressing out of passion, not pressure. Whether we're practicing beginner's French or working through SketchUp tools and modeling techniques, I strive to create lessons that feel approachable, engaging, and personalized to each student's goals and learning style.
I have studied In Costa Rica for my Junior year of University. I lived and taught Spanish in Phoenix AZ. I traveled extensively throughout Spain for 2 months and I have also traveled in Mexico.
I have a Master of Arts degree in English, an Education Specialist degree, and a Doctorate of Education. I've taught high school English for 24 years, and I still love it! I enjoy all of the subjects I teach, (I teach Speech and ACT Prep as well as English) but I especially love literature -- interpreting it and writing about it -- and grammar. I had an amazing grammar teacher who taught me that grammar makes sense, and I like turning on that light for others. I like meeting students, hearing about their challenges, and supporting them as they strive toward their goals. I've had great success helping students prepare for standardized tests, essays, and presentations. When I'm not teaching, I love to read, crochet, watch true crime documentaries, and hang out with my dog and family.
We are all math people! I continually strive to provide the best research based math instruction to all students. All students deserve the best!

Formally I am a Computer Scientist with a Bachelor of Science degree. That launched my IT career where I held every job they have a title for (and a few they don't) over 35 years. I discovered early on that I mostly enjoyed sharing my experiences and knowledge with others. After retiring as the CIO of a DoD research and development Command, I turned my side hustle of photography into my full time job, that allows me to host workshops for other photographers, teach formal photography principals, and take on tutoring clients as well. One day I might be discussing principals of network traffic management, and the next teaching creative composition.
My 30-year teaching experience in Virginia public schools included teaching middle school math and science, and high school Chemistry, Consumer Chemistry, AP Chemistry, Algebra I, Algebra II, and General Math. After retiring from teaching middle and high school, I taught at two universities in Virginia and Arkansas helping college students learn how to teach K-12 science and math, and directing a STEM Education Center that provided math and science teaching and learning support for K-12 teachers and students in Northeast and Northcentral Arkansas. During my retirement I have enjoyed tutoring K-5 students with their math and reading, and supporting high school students with their chemistry. Currently, I am available to tutor my favorite subjects-elementary and middle school math and science, and high school chemistry. My educational background that helped to prepare me as a teacher and a tutor includes a Ph.D. (Virginia Tech) and Master's and Bachelor's degrees (Radford University) focusing on teaching and learning, mathematics, and chemistry. When students are learning math and science, they are opening doors for success in their futures, regardless of the paths their lives take. Knowing that I can play a small role in supporting students achieve success in the present AND the future inspires me to continue working with students as a tutor.
I am a life long student who has struggled time and time again with finding the best way to learn and be able to understand the material. I've found that the biggest problem I have is the fear of failure, which I believe to be a very common problem. I learned to understand that it's ok if I fail, just as long as I try again until I get it right.

Outside of tutoring, I enjoy reading contemporary fiction and exploring new writing techniques, which continually enrich my teaching practice.
