For the past 15 years, I've been the secret sauce behind a thriving Youth Group, launched a rockstar regional study group, and transformed organizations as the Brand Ambassador extraordinaire. Now, I'm sharpening my skills, talents, and superpowers to offer a unique array of services that will sprinkle a little magic onto your life or organization. I received my undergraduate degree in Physics with a minor in Mathematics. Also, I recently graduated with my Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in Applied Physics. I love teaching and helping students grasp concepts. I believe in moving beyond rote memorization to personal mastery and ownership of one's education. I am available to tutor in SAT Math Test prep, Algebra 1-4, Pre-Calulus, and Trigonometry.

As a graduate of Hampton University (BS), Trinity Washington University (M.Ed.), and Walden University (Ed.D.), I am a life-long educator. I have taught all grade levels and adults in a variety of subject areas. My concentration in Special Education has afforded me the opportunity to have developed a multitude of skills and strategies for teaching. I use this knowledge to instruct in all academic subjects, vocational and life skills, and personal development. I don't have a particular favorite subject to teach. My joy comes from watching someone grasp a new skill or concept that they did not have, or think they have. I believe we all can learn something new everyday. Regardless of your age or what you know, learning is a continous process. Outside of my love of teaching, I enjoy reading, puzzles, karate, Tai Chi, traveling, learning new crafts, and spending quality time with my family and close friends.

I'm currently pursuing my Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. I have been a tutor since the age of about 15 or 16. I used my hobbies to tutor very young children in music (piano, clarinet, voice), sports (cheerleading, tennis, dance), and art (crafting, painting, public speaking). After high school, I became a peer mentor and volunteer teacher. I tutored 4th and 5th-grade math and worked as an assistant kindergarten teacher while in college working towards my BA in Journalism/Pre-Law with a minor in child development psychology. I have been teaching professionally since 2018. I have continued to work with K-12 in Reading, Writing, Music, and Performing Arts. I have a vision for equality in the world, and I believe this happens through equal access to information. Knowledge is power, and equipping students with it is the passport to a better future for our world.

I have extensive experience in the education field, including teaching in the K-12 setting, school administration, working in the Virginia Department of Education, and teaching in higher education. The joy of my education career comes from helping students feel success in their learning and helping teachers refine their skills for the effective delivery of instruction to all students. Because of my background in teaching teachers, I am familiar with and able to apply the most effective teaching and learning practices deemed exemplary in today's schools. In fact, I have contributed to the design of some research-based practices in schools, such as teaching for character development that makes students better learners and citizens. As a teacher, I have expertise that allows me to analyze a student's learning strengths and weaknesses to determine how to increase his/her learning capacity. My diagnostic skills and procedures provide guidance in how to help learners improve their own learning and become more independent and self-reliant in their learning. Because of my knowledge of the developmental characteristics of different age groups and styles of learners, I am readily able to design teaching and learning experiences that begin where learners are to advance them forward. In addition, I have experience in designing lessons for the full range of learners, from students who need remedial support to learners who are accelerated and/or gifted. I am confident that I can work successfully with all kinds of learners to increase their learning and overall academic success.

I obtained my undergraduate degree in Biochemistry from Hampton University. I am currently a Research Technician at Emory University. Using my expertise as a Research Technician to explain how chemistry works conceptually and in theory makes me a well rounded tutor in this subject area. My goal as a tutor is to provide expertise, experience and encouragement to each student. Some of the golden strategies that I have incorporated when tutoring are establishing expectations with the learner and discovering the strengths and weaknesses of the learner. I believe these strategies are key to being a successful tutor.

My name is Melanie and I joined the CMS Instructional Technology Department in March 2016. Before joining the department, I was a Technology Facilitator for Ridge Road Middle School in Charlotte, NC in addition to being an Extended Employee in this department since 2012, a Middle Grades Mathematics teacher for 7 years (1 year at McCClintock Middle School), a Computer Support Specialist, and I am a proud veteran of the U.S. Army.As an Extended Employee for the CMS Instructional Technology Department, I assisted in various Professional Learning sessions as an instructor and worked specifically with designing Atomic Learning Pathways for teachers to receive Technology Credits.I received my Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Hampton University (Go Pirates!), a Master of Art in Teaching from Kaplan University, a Microsoft Office Certification (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access) from Savannah Technical College, in addition to becoming a Google Certified Educator in July 2014 and will be renewing it in the Summer of 2016. In Fall 2015 I completed my Graduate Certificate in Instructional Systems Technology and Educational Leadership from UNC-Charlotte, and received my School Specialist Licensure (077 Licensure) in Spring 2016.I love working with teachers, staff, and parents inside and outside of school on the best technology to use for their lifestyles. I am very knowledgeable about iOs, Windows, and Android devices.

In my childhood, the intricacies of science captivated me, sparking an insatiable curiosity for understanding the fundamental workings of the world. As I embarked on my academic journey, this fascination only deepened, propelling me towards enrolling in science courses that challenged and enriched my understanding. Concurrently, my experiences caring for children within my community through babysitting cultivated a profound appreciation for the importance of nurturing and safeguarding the well-being of young individuals. Motivated by a desire to combine my passion for scientific inquiry with a commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of children, I embarked on a deliberate path towards a career in pediatric medicine. This aspiration led me to pursue a rigorous Biochemistry major at Hampton University, where I eagerly seized every opportunity to expand my knowledge and skills in preparation for the challenges ahead. Within the dynamic campus community, I actively engaged in various organizations, fostering connections with peers who shared my drive for personal and academic growth. My parents instilled the necessity of always having the appropriate tools for every task. For our sports activities, my Dad spent endless amounts of time researching the sneakers, cleats, helmets, ballet shoes, and cheerleading pom-poms that were to accompany my brother and I. Since there was no internet, we shopped from store-to store to ensure that our equipment would give us the best possible input to our performance. Not rich by any means, our parents felt that it was worth the expense in order for us to perform at our peaks.It is with these thoughts in mind, that I have approached my career as an educator. I see education as a tool for life. It allows students to be better performers in a variety of ways, not just academically. The well-educated student has been trained to have a positive impact on his community and to be socially sound.Therefore, it is this awareness that prompted my decision to become a Varsity Tutor.
