No obligation. Takes ~1 minute.

I obtained my undergraduate degree in Biochemistry from Hampton University. I am currently a Research Technician at Emory University. Using my expertise as a Research Technician to explain how chemistry works conceptually and in theory makes me a well rounded tutor in this subject area. My goal as a tutor is to provide expertise, experience and encouragement to each student. Some of the golden strategies that I have incorporated when tutoring are establishing expectations with the learner and discovering the strengths and weaknesses of the learner. I believe these strategies are key to being a successful tutor.

It is not only my dream, but my God-given gift to be a servant to others. In particular, interning in the legal profession would allow me to continue my commitment to ridding homelessness and eradicating unequal education for all students. I feel confident that I could contribute substantively to this program while strengthening the skills Ill need for my career. As an elementary school teacher for Teach for America, I was able to see how various practices disproportionately affect students of color and without equal education, life as we know it, in essence, can never be truly equal. For two years, I have worked at the United States Veterans Administration Domiciliary for Homeless Veterans. One veteran (whom I grew to admire) thanked me for simply listening to him vent about being proud of being drug and alcohol free for six months. He specifically indicated that our conversation gave him the gusto to attend an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting that dayone in which he served as the group leader. This experience revealed to me what I already believedthat people are inherently good. We simply need the right set of circumstances in front of us in order for our best selves to shine. And every once in a while, some of us need second chances.Since my career goals are vested in civil rights and equal opportunity, and discrimination generally, I have facilitated various presentations for homeless veterans, parents, school workers, and students on their rights and opportunities to advocate for themselves. This semester, I was elected as the 1L Section Representative and joined the Child and Youth Advocates, situations which have exposed me to the work lawyers can do to promote the rights of students. Additionally, joining the Women of Law has kept me updated on the issues facing female minority students. My work as Section Representative continues to keep me advocating for my peers on issues that affect us as we matriculate through law school. This experience has begun to give me experience in working with people, and working with your company would allow me to gain experience advocating for the specific client populations I hope to assist in my career.Given my background in education and talent for leading students, instructors, and teaching teams toward success, I feel I am in a great position to make a positive impact your company. I would be very happy to work on cases dealing with language or national origin discrimination, but Id also be delighted at the opportunity to work in any of the areas on which your office focuses, including LGBT and disability rights. I am eager to have the opportunity to work for this program and work on issues that enhance our country. I hope that you will humbly accept my letter and consider me for opportunities that may come.

In my childhood, the intricacies of science captivated me, sparking an insatiable curiosity for understanding the fundamental workings of the world. As I embarked on my academic journey, this fascination only deepened, propelling me towards enrolling in science courses that challenged and enriched my understanding. Concurrently, my experiences caring for children within my community through babysitting cultivated a profound appreciation for the importance of nurturing and safeguarding the well-being of young individuals. Motivated by a desire to combine my passion for scientific inquiry with a commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of children, I embarked on a deliberate path towards a career in pediatric medicine. This aspiration led me to pursue a rigorous Biochemistry major at Hampton University, where I eagerly seized every opportunity to expand my knowledge and skills in preparation for the challenges ahead. Within the dynamic campus community, I actively engaged in various organizations, fostering connections with peers who shared my drive for personal and academic growth. Serving as the recording secretary for the SouthWest Pre-Alumni Council, I honed invaluable organizational and collaborative skills, orchestrating events and initiatives aimed at fostering a supportive community for our members. Moreover, my dedication to service was evident through my active involvement in clubs and organizations, where I accrued service hours integral to my personal ethos. Beyond the confines of academia, I sought out immersive experiences to deepen my understanding of the medical profession. Shadowing Dr. Teriya Richmond at her medical practice proved to be a transformative experience, providing me with firsthand exposure to the complexities of patient care and medical administration. Under Dr. Richmond's guidance, I am acquiring a spectrum of skills, ranging from routine administrative tasks to observing intricate medical procedures. Her commitment to providing compassionate and equitable healthcare for her patients resonates deeply with me, further solidifying my resolve to pursue a career in pediatric medicine. My academic pursuits, coupled with enriching extracurricular experiences, have equipped me with the resilience, determination, and professionalism necessary to navigate the challenges inherent in the pursuit of medical education. As I eagerly anticipate the forthcoming opportunities and trials that will further sculpt my journey towards becoming a pediatrician, I am inspired by the prospect of contributing to and learning from the esteemed community at Eastern Virginia Medical School. Eastern Virginia Medical School offers an innovative and comprehensive program that aligns with my academic and career aspirations. It would be a profound honor to contribute to and learn from such an institution as I strive towards fulfilling my dream of serving as a compassionate and skilled pediatrician, dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children and families in my community and beyond.

For the past 8 years, I have worked as a Special Education Teacher for students in grades K-6. I am passionate about education because I believe that education is the passport to the future, but the future will belong to those who prepare for it today. I believe that by helping students develop their Reading, Writing, and Math skills, I am equipping them today with the tools they'll need to be successful in the future. I know that everyday, I have the privilege and responsibility of developing the minds of the future leaders, and problem solvers of the world. I received my undergraduate degree in Physics with a minor in Mathematics. Also, I recently graduated with my Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in Applied Physics. My parents instilled the necessity of always having the appropriate tools for every task. For our sports activities, my Dad spent endless amounts of time researching the sneakers, cleats, helmets, ballet shoes, and cheerleading pom-poms that were to accompany my brother and I. Since there was no internet, we shopped from store-to store to ensure that our equipment would give us the best possible input to our performance. Not rich by any means, our parents felt that it was worth the expense in order for us to perform at our peaks. It is with these thoughts in mind, that I have approached my career as an educator. I see education as a tool for life. It allows students to be better performers in a variety of ways, not just academically. The well-educated student has been trained to have a positive impact on his community and to be socially sound. Therefore, it is this awareness that prompted my decision to become a Varsity Tutor. The vetting process, alone, proves that VT believes that the proper tools ensure peak performance. Rest assured that I will be instrumental in this vision of the well-educated student.

There is brilliance in each of us. Sometimes we miss a concept or have developed learning styles that keep our brilliance hidden. Others of us just need a coach. For those, the "studying" of a thing is much less exciting than the "doing" of a thing. My job as your tutor is to help you discover your brilliance by packaging your study so you can "do".
Thank you for taking the time to find out more about me. My name is Vonnita, and I have a Bachelor's of Arts Degree in Psychology. Post undergrad, I continued my studies in graduate school to complete 3 1/2 years of mathematics to prepare and pass the PRAXIS I, Middle School PRAXIS and Secondary PRAXIS II exams for state certification in the department of education. Since graduation, I have worked several years as a middle school and secondary mathematics teacher for 6th - 9th grades, and spent time tutoring kids of friends and family by referral, assisted with transitioning students into middle school through a Summer Bridge Program, and created group sessions for students needing help with note-taking and studying skills. In my experience, teaching and tutoring is gratifying when students make the connections and find the joy in learning math and what appears to be complex, by starting with prior knowledge, making connections to new learning , simplifying the process using laymen terms or "plain engish," then introducing the vocabulary to understand the content which leads to increased proficiency. In my spare time, I enjoy shared experiences with my family, working out at the gym, eating out at restaurants, traveling to new places, go-cart racing, and watching my kids during sports practices and games.

I have extensive experience in the education field, including teaching in the K-12 setting, school administration, working in the Virginia Department of Education, and teaching in higher education. The joy of my education career comes from helping students feel success in their learning and helping teachers refine their skills for the effective delivery of instruction to all students. Because of my background in teaching teachers, I am familiar with and able to apply the most effective teaching and learning practices deemed exemplary in today's schools. In fact, I have contributed to the design of some research-based practices in schools, such as teaching for character development that makes students better learners and citizens. As a teacher, I have expertise that allows me to analyze a student's learning strengths and weaknesses to determine how to increase his/her learning capacity. My diagnostic skills and procedures provide guidance in how to help learners improve their own learning and become more independent and self-reliant in their learning. Because of my knowledge of the developmental characteristics of different age groups and styles of learners, I am readily able to design teaching and learning experiences that begin where learners are to advance them forward. In addition, I have experience in designing lessons for the full range of learners, from students who need remedial support to learners who are accelerated and/or gifted. I am confident that I can work successfully with all kinds of learners to increase their learning and overall academic success.
The best way to learn is through play! That's my philosophy. It's the way I learn best, so why not teach that way as well? I like to take my students on a journey of curiosity and investigation until they reach their own conclusion. I spent my childhood running through some of the best and biggest parks in The Bronx letting my curiosity lead the way. While reading, I focus on methods authors use to keep my interest and show my students how to use those methods to improve their own writing. I find the history of our country and our planet to be amazing and have developed projects that make learning about it more interesting. I must admit that like many students, I hated math growing up, but somehow math found its way into my heart (throughout my ten years of teaching) and it refuses to leave! When I am not teaching, I am swimming, dancing, or singing out loud and off key. I try to incorporate fun and laughter into my life whenever possible and LEARNING IS THE GREATEST PART OF LIVING!

My joy comes from watching someone grasp a new skill or concept that they did not have, or think they have. I believe we all can learn something new everyday. Regardless of your age or what you know, learning is a continous process. Outside of my love of teaching, I enjoy reading, puzzles, karate, Tai Chi, traveling, learning new crafts, and spending quality time with my family and close friends.
