I am an undergraduate student at the University of Virginia (UVA) originally from Fairfield, Connecticut. I am pursuing my Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Global Public Health on the pre-med track with the hopes of becoming a physician (hopefully in pediatrics). At UVA, I am involved in youth mentoring as a Program Director of "GEMS" (Girls Excited about Math and Science), where I teach exciting lessons and conduct experiments with a class of elementary school girls in a variety of scientific topics, while I am also the Head Program Director of Youth Mentoring at UVA. I was also involved in tutoring throughout high school, where I worked with a group of special needs students. While I tutor in a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about English, Science (especially Biology and Chemistry), and Humanities, which are most strongly reflected in my own studies. In my experience in the areas of reading and writing in particular, strong literary thinking skills helped me to be more creative and set myself apart in many of my applications to college, so I am passionate about helping students of any age to become stronger writers. I am also passionate about enhancing students' skills in critical thinking, especially through STEM topics, which can set students up for success in any difficult course or standardized test. I hope to instill a strong appreciation for education and learning within each of my students, and I believe that the first step is to help students feel more confident in their areas of interest while setting goals for the future. In my spare time, I enjoy hiking and being outdoors, traveling, painting, and playing soccer.

I'm also a conductor and manage a performing organization.
I am a recent Economics graduate from the University of Virginia who also has personal experience in taking 12+ AP tests, fancy calculus and SAT/ACT prep. Consider me as someone who has maybe been in your position and who is also very sympathetic to the gruel of standardized testing. What I might lack in absolute tutoring experience, I make up for with effort and a genuine desire to help motivated students.
I am a student at the University of Virginia majoring in Commerce. I have a passion for statistics, mathematics, and teaching others.
I am a chemistry and environmental science student at the University of Virginia. In high school I completed the IB diploma program and took chemistry, math, english and history at the higher level. I tutor in Middle school math, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, IB Math (HL,SL and Studies), Calculus 1, Calculus 2, IB Chemistry (SL and HL), IB Environmental Systems and Societies, Ecology, and SAT math test prep. I have experience tutoring students in IB courses and non-IB courses. When I tutor I try to lead you to right answer by asking you questions to determine what you already know, clearing up misconceptions, and getting you to think critically about the material. This tutoring strategy is particularly effective for IB exams or application questions that test critical thinking in addition to your mastery of the subject matter.
I'm Julian and I'm currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Virginia. I have been there before. Repeatedly, there are moments where I do not understand a certain subject and I am in need of assistance. Even the most notable scholars need help at some point in their lifetime. For this reason, I'd like to repay the favor and help other students in need. More people than I can count have been there to help me and I would like to do the same with other students. To do this, I will tutor with an engaging and interactive environment. When assisting students, I like to go beyond explicit instructions. I strive for the student to fully understand the processes that we cover so that it sticks in the student's mind more effectively. Subsequently, I believe it is important to continue practicing the content individually. The main goal is to instill long term confidence in the student that surpasses what is being taught.
I am a Posse Scholar at the University of Virginia. Posse Scholars receive full-tuition scholarships for our leadership and academic merit. I am a leader and a great team player. I have tutored in the Day in the Life program at The University of Virginia, learning from other teachers and Professors. I believe a teacher should be motivating, kind, and respectful to his student. While not being a student at UVa, I tutor in Houston, as learning and teaching are some of my passions.
I am a student at the University of Virginia studying mechanical and aerospace engineering. During my time in high school, I was able to work with several students as part of the honors society programs in order to help them better perform in various subject. I particularly enjoy tutoring math at all levels and physics because I find them very interesting, applicable, and intuitive and I enjoy sharing my knowledge in these subjects with others in order to help them better appreciate the subjects as much as I do.
I am currently a 4th year student at the University of Virginia pursuing a double major in Economics and German Literature and Linguistics. I studied at Humboldt Universitt zu Berlin for two years while living in Berlin, Germany, specializing in courses such as Marketing of Innovations, Economics of Entrepreneurship, and Entrepreneurial Decision Making. I am currently very passionate about pursuing a career working with children and young adults, either mentoring or teaching, and my experiences volunteering with refugees in Berlin sparked within me a passion for this career path. I am very well versed in writing, reading comprehension, 2-D and 3-D art (digital and traditional), languages, and math up to Calculus I. I have several years of experience tutoring students in both SAT and ACT prep, as well as in English and German for non-native speakers. Some of my areas of interests include being outdoors, cooking new cuisines, reading German and English literature and books, drawing and painting, taking road trips, traveling across Europe, and listening to music.
Hi everyone! My name is Iris, and I am passionate about making math fun and easy for everyone. My philosophy is that every student can succeed when concepts are explained from the ground up in a way that fits their learning style. I break problems into steps, encourage questions, and create a comfortable environment for students. I think mistakes are an important part of learning, and my motivation comes from seeing a student go from stuck to succeeding on their own!
Hi! My name is Chelsea and I'm a current medical student passionate about making difficult topics understandable to all students. I believe that catering how I teach to different learning styles and making real world connections helps to break down challenging subjects. I specifically enjoy teaching subjects related to science, reading comprehension, and psychology but I have a strong background in many subjects.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Charlottesville has 5 school districts serving over 14,000 students across 47 schools, and Varsity Tutors connects students from all of them with personalized tutoring. Whether your student attends a school in Albemarle County, City of Charlottesville, or another local district, we match them with tutors who understand Virginia's curriculum standards and can support their specific academic needs.
Personalized 1-on-1 instruction is particularly effective for SOL preparation because tutors can focus on the exact standards your student needs to master, rather than moving at a whole-class pace. Tutors work with Charlottesville students on test-taking strategies, content gaps, and practice with SOL-style questions—helping them feel confident and prepared for state assessments in subjects like math, reading, science, and social studies.
Charlottesville students seek tutoring across a wide range of subjects, but math and reading support are consistently in high demand—especially as students transition between grade levels or prepare for standardized testing. We also connect many local students with tutors for science, writing, test prep (SAT/ACT), and subject-specific help like AP courses and foreign languages.
Your student's first session is focused on building rapport and understanding their specific needs. The tutor will ask about academic strengths, challenges, goals, and learning style—and may review recent schoolwork or test scores to identify where support would be most helpful. This foundation allows the tutor to create a personalized plan aligned with your student's school curriculum and long-term objectives.
Charlottesville schools maintain a 12.6:1 average student-teacher ratio, which is solid, but even in well-resourced classrooms, individual attention is limited. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction allows tutors to adapt teaching in real-time to your student's pace, ask probing questions, and address misconceptions immediately—something that's difficult in a classroom setting, even with good ratios.
The ideal frequency depends on your student's goals and challenges. Some students benefit from weekly sessions for ongoing support, while others meet twice a week during test prep or when tackling difficult units. Your tutor will recommend a schedule based on your student's needs and progress, and you can adjust as needed—there's no one-size-fits-all approach.
Yes. Many Charlottesville high school students work with tutors on SAT and ACT preparation, and personalized instruction is highly effective for test prep. Tutors help students understand question types, develop strategies, practice under timed conditions, and target weak areas—all tailored to your student's starting level and goals. Whether your student is aiming to improve a specific section or boost their overall score, a tutor can create a focused prep plan.
The process is straightforward: tell us about your student's needs, grade level, and subjects, and we'll match them with an experienced tutor who fits their learning style and goals. You'll have a chance to meet the tutor and discuss expectations before committing, and you can start sessions as soon as you're both ready. Most Charlottesville families are able to connect with a tutor within a few days of reaching out.
