I believe every student has the chance to succeed. Some students simply need more tools than others. Thankfully, tutoring is an amazing way to provide these tools. I worked as a high school and middle school special education para for three years, and I have begun my first year teaching college English. I have learned to become very patient and adaptable to student needs. I have a bachelor's degree in film from Mary Baldwin University, and I have a master's decree in creative writing from Regis University. I tutor English and writing courses as these are the subjects I am most proficient in and most enjoy. I also help prepare students for state and college board testing, reviewing helpful strategies. I teach to help students succeed. Learning styles differ greatly, so students should be treated as individuals. Tutoring helps focus on an individual so they can be the best they can be. Outside of academia, I love movies and television. I also really enjoy comic books.

I have been teaching elementary school students for 22 years. I have experience in Kindergarten - 3rd grade. I love making students feel valued and I love to have fun while learning. I have twin daughters who are 17 and I am married to a Fire Captain.

The NFL and professional rodeo have nothing on being a teacher. I thought I had achieved my "dream jobs" when I got to work in professional football and rodeo, but changing courses in my mid-twenties taught me that teaching was my real "dream job". I have been a special education teacher for approximately twenty years. Most of my time has been spent in middle school, but I have also worked in elementary school. Most of my work has been in public education but I did work in a couple of international schools in Singapore and South Korea. I am currently a teacher of students who are blind or visually impaired. I love being with my students. Learning CAN be fun (I love to laugh), and when possible tie it to student's experiences. They are the owners of their educations!

I have a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences from JMU and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Mary Baldwin College. I am certified to teach Pre-K through 6th grade. I have worked with children of all ages and I've tutored students in all of the core subjects, mostly focusing on math and reading. I've also taught preschool and tested preschool children. I've taught English to refugees from several nations, mostly adults, although children were sometimes in the classes. I love working with students. I have been a teacher for a long time. I started substitute teaching even before I finished my Bachelor of Arts in History at Mary Baldwin University in Staunton, Virginia. Growing up in California and New Mexico I learned a lot of Spanish. I took up through Spanish 4 in High School and tested out of Freshman Spanish and was able to take Spanish 2 at Texas Christian University, where I started my college education. I feel quite comfortable working with students in Spanish 1 and 2.I enjoy working with students helping them to learn new things and better understand new concepts. Sometimes students need extra attention and extra explanation to understand new things. I enjoy taking problems apart to make each part understood so the whole concept can be understood. Often one on one or a small group can take more time to figure things out.I am married, and have been for almost 50 years to a Presbyterian minister. He is now retired. Wehave three adult children and four grandchildren. Because of my husband's career and my father's (construction), I have lived in 12 states and worked with all kinds of people. I am basically retired but I do miss working with students, helping them to reach that "Ah ha" moment when they understand a new concept.

My teaching journey began with my teaching assistantship, where I served as a laboratory instructor and lecture assistant for Biology and Microbiology courses. I began after-school tutoring during the fall of 2020, where I gained comfort teaching and tutoring high school students. My teaching style focuses primarily on my students' individual successes and information retention by utilizing evidence-based and inclusive teaching practices. I am most passionate about the Biological Sciences and Humanities, with expertise in ELA and Spanish as well. I am currently a doctoral student studying microbiology at NCAT.
