I am a veteran and professional engineer working in the space industry. My military background is in computer systems/networks and I completed my undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Washington in Seattle. I am nearing the end of my M.S. in Aeronautics & Astronautics from Purdue, which I have been working towards part-time since 2020. I have tutoring experience from my undergraduate experience where I worked as a chemistry, physics, and mathematics tutor. Additionally, I have mentoring experience in my current role as an engineer. I have a strong interest in continual learning and enjoy helping others succeed in their studies & educational pursuits.

During my Bachelor's studies at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, I was a mathematics and statistics tutor for a year, which I greatly enjoyed. I am currently a fourth-year Ph.D. student studying mathematics at the University of Florida. During my Ph.D. at the University of Florida, I was a teaching assistant for Calculus I, Calculus II, and Precalculus, and I was an instructor for a section of Calculus I. These experiences helped me develop my tutoring skills. Many students see math as a set of formulas that they can apply to the problems on their exams and homework. However, I feel that this way of thinking not only stifles true understanding, but also makes students' lives harder. My teaching philosophy is that if a strong conceptual understanding is built, then students will be well-equipped to answer any question that they can be asked. When I tutor, I make sure that students develop this foundation first and foremost.

I am passionate about working with children and students of all ages to assist them in achieving their highest potential. My favorite subjects to teach are phonics, reading, science and math. My approach is to meet the students where they are at in their studies and make their learning experience fun, interactive, engaging and exciting. I worked for Sony Electronics for over a decade as a Senior Electrical Design Engineer, leading hardware designs of newly introduced features of Sony's High-Definition televisions. I have also managed a privately-owned business. I have always been passionate about tutoring. For example, I tutored math, calculus and physics in college, and I volunteered in educating seniors in computer skills. I especially enjoy tutoring students who are interested in learning the subject themselves. Whether they are good at it is irrelevant as I will work very hard to ensure they have the right foundation to be confident and enthusiastic about the topic at hand. I worked for The Princeton Review as a tutor for the SAT. I did very well on both the SAT and ACT, and like teaching students how to do better on those. I grew up in the Boston area and now live in Citrus County, Florida. I graduated from MIT in chemical engineering and worked for many years as a chemical process engineer, so I have a strong background in math and science, especially chemistry and thermodynamics. I've also been granted six U.S. patents. When the pandemic hit us, I moved to Florida and did part-time work as a chess tutor, then became a substitute teacher in the middle and high schools in our district. I enjoyed working with the students, many of whom had difficulty learning in big classes with many disruptions. I found that I could best help these students by using real-world examples to teach difficult concepts in a new way. Often, then, the student would come away with a new perspective and a much better understanding of the concept. I was happy to be able to help. These days as a VT tutor, I continue to use, whenever possible, real-world examples in my own material in chemistry and thermodynamics.
