I am an undergraduate student at the University of Chicago, working towards a pre-med double major in Psychology and Biology (with a specialization in Neuroscience). Beginning in my early teens, I began working and volunteering as a tutor in a variety of environments: I began as a volunteer at a summer program for underprivileged children at the Learning and Tutoring Center of East Austin, and since I have worked as a private elementary school tutor, a private SAT-prep tutor, and a preschool tutor for the Neighborhood Schools Program in South Side Chicago. I have taken, and succeeded in, a broad range of Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) classes, and am familiar with the latest formats, question varieties, and scoring guidelines of these standardized tests, along with the SAT. My teaching philosophy is to go beyond "teaching to the test". Although test-taking skills are crucial for any assessment, I believe the most valuable thing a tutor can do is to enhance and help develop conceptual understanding in our clients. I believe that once a student understands something at the conceptual level, he or she will be much better prepared for the topic, not only in the specific test we are preparing for, but anywhere else it may come up. Memorizing words or equations might help somebody in the short term, but understanding why that word means what it means, or what an equation is actually depicting is worth the extra effort. Besides test-prep I think I can be a great help in writing and editing, as I have experience in everything from short, timed essays such as the SAT essay, to college essays, to research papers such as the IB Extended Essay. I am fully fluent in Spanish for anyone who wishes to communicate in or practice the language.

I'm passionate about guiding high schoolers through the college application process. The admissions process is probably one of the most confusing, anxiety-inducing experiences you'll have in high school, but I'm full of ideas for making the entire process as successful and stress-free as possible. I've successfully guided many students through every stage of admissions -- from figuring out where to apply and then staying organized and on-track, to "packaging" themselves and producing a perfect personal statement -- and I love witnessing them achieve their admissions dreams.

I am a rising senior at Duke University who is Pre Med and majoring in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. I was born and raised in Miami FL and went to public school until college (Sunset Elementary, GW Carver Middle and Coral Reef Senior High for those from Miami). I decided to start tutoring because I would not be on this path had I not had good teachers supporting me along the way. For that reason I want to be able to help others achieve their goals without academics being a huge hurdle.

I am a Vassar and Dartmouth educated woman with a passion for learning and for making learning fun. I believe in not only helping a student with the assignment at hand, but rather to teach and enforce tools and skills that will help each student for a lifetime. I also believe in customizing my lesson plans to each student rather than emphasizing a "one style fits all" approach. I am positive, energetic, and thrive on helping others succeed and reach their goals. Hobbies: swimming, writing, singing, art, books, reading, music

I am a graduate of SUNY University at Albany. I received my Bachelor of Science in Economics and Japanese with a minor in History in 2010. Since then (and even before as a sub) I have predominantly been teaching in the New York City public education system. I had worked as a substitute teaching assistant since 2008, moving between dozens of NYC public schools before finally settling in late 2011 at M.S. 216 George J. Ryan--an incredibly diverse middle school in Queens. During my tenure in the school system I have spent time teaching students from Pre-K to 12th grade, from all cultural background and socioeconomic statuses. Regardless of whom I have taught, I have always enjoyed it, partly because I often learn as much from my students as they learn from me. Regardless of the subject, I love teaching, and I find it to be one of the most rewarding and meaningful activities, which cliched as it may sound, really can make a difference in people's lives. Besides teaching, I am also keenly interested in the human body, specifically biomechanics, kinesiology, and rehabilitation through movement. I am currently enrolled in a Doctorate of Physical Therapy program at Washington University in St. Louis, which I should finish in 2018. Hobbies: art, books, sports, reading, music, writing

I particularly like helping students to develop reading, writing, and analytical skills that are useful in the social sciences and business. I also enjoy teaching music fundamentals, especially jazz theory and jazz improvisation with a creative approach that combines aspects of cultural understanding and music theory.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students from across Riverview's 36 schools with personalized tutoring support. Whether your student attends a school in the Hillsborough County district or nearby areas, we match them with tutors who understand local curriculum standards and can provide targeted help aligned with what they're learning in the classroom.
With Riverview's average student-teacher ratio of 18.5:1, many students benefit from one-on-one attention that goes beyond what's possible in a traditional classroom. Personalized tutoring allows a tutor to focus entirely on your student's specific learning gaps, pace, and learning style—something that's difficult for teachers managing full classes to provide consistently.
Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors who are familiar with Florida's academic benchmarks and the specific standards taught in Hillsborough County schools. Whether your student needs help with reading, math, science, or social studies aligned to state expectations, tutors provide targeted instruction designed to build mastery of key concepts and improve performance on assessments.
Riverview students work with tutors across a wide range of subjects, with strong demand for math (algebra, geometry, pre-calculus), reading comprehension, writing, and science. We also serve students preparing for standardized tests like the SAT and ACT, as well as those needing support in AP and honors courses. The specific subjects vary by grade level and individual student needs.
The first session is focused on understanding your student's learning goals, current challenges, and academic strengths. The tutor will assess where your student stands, identify specific areas that need support, and create a personalized plan for how tutoring can help. This foundation ensures that all future sessions are targeted and effective.
Many students show noticeable progress within 2-4 weeks of consistent tutoring, though the timeline depends on the subject, the student's starting point, and how frequently they meet with their tutor. Regular tutoring sessions combined with practice between meetings tend to produce the fastest results. We recommend discussing realistic goals with your tutor based on your student's specific situation.
Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors who have strong subject expertise and experience helping students learn. Tutors are vetted for their knowledge and teaching ability, and many have backgrounds in education, subject-matter specialization, or professional experience in their fields. We match students with tutors whose expertise aligns with their specific learning needs.
Varsity Tutors offers flexible tutoring options to fit different budgets and schedules. Pricing varies based on the subject, tutor expertise, and frequency of sessions. We recommend starting with a consultation to discuss your student's needs and get clear information about costs so you can make the best decision for your family.
