Students, My name is Dion Hawley, and I'm here to help you succeed. In life, we all rely on the guidance and support of others. Just as many people have helped shape my path and career, I aim to do the same for you. I come from a background in education, as well as music video, television, and commercial production, and I'm here to support you in whatever way you need. I've had the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects and with some incredibly talented people, and along the way I've learned that everyone approaches learning differently. My goal is to meet you where you are and help make challenging concepts feel clear, manageable, and even enjoyable. For me, the real reward is seeing that moment when things click when you understand, feel confident, and are motivated to keep going. That's the win for both of us. I look forward to working with you.

Auto Biography and Self-AssessmentI was born Michael Scott Hull. However, I am one of those people who is referred to by his middle name, Scott. I have taught studio art at Daytona State College where for over five years. I truly enjoy teaching in higher education as well as sharing in the creative journey with my students. I have done workshops at other colleges and demonstrated at several high school mentoring programs. I am a constant learner, I continue to challenge myself in order to gain inspiration and it helps to maintain my work ethic. The reason my style is so diverse.I have to constantly familiarize myself with the up and coming trends. However, I must say that I gravitated toward more trending computer based technology that can offer visual engagements as well as inventive interactions. Currently I am developing a work flow for a gesture based navigation and manipulation for polygon sculpting using such tools as Zbrush and Leap Motion. The technique will allow for a functional pottery technique to be instructed, mastered, and reproduced within a digital arena. Having this ability will allow distance learners to utilizing an online learning management system to gain a studio art degree in 3D.What I want for the future of the studio art?I want to be able to build a sustainable program within the digital arena for the arts. As we move away from the brick and mortar style of teaching many of the face-to- face art programs will be subjected to loss. I currently instruct many me-diums within studio art and I believe in its importance, which in turns motivates my need in solidifying a new approach. Implementing more engaging and current digital media allows for students to gain a sustainable education in areas such gaming, education, training, marketing, as well as medical. After all what use is it to become a plastic surgeon without the ability to sculpt and recreate the human form with beauty. How could a lab technician recognize small molecules and/or bacteria without a design-oriented foundation? There are many new approaches for the future of fine art but it must be taken seriously not as a craft/hobby but an essential eye to muscle training of technique and design. What is Interesting about myself? An interesting fact about myself is I am lifelong surfer and I live a rock's throw away from the ocean. My entire family surfs so you can imagine what a magical experience it can be. My wife delivers babies and I have four beautiful children(out of the house now) I also have 3 dogs and 2 cats.

Growing up, kids like to pretend they're going to be doctors or professional athletes or astronauts. I wanted to be a teacher. I'm not even kidding - I had my own classroom in my garage where the neighborhood students came. This started in third grade and continued into middle school. I would find out what they knew, teach them a lesson, and then assign them homework. I would tell (tattle) their parents if they didn't do the work. My first parent/ teacher conferences were held at my neighbor's house in their living room. I assessed my friend Doug's progress in math, which was dreadful from what I remember, and gave pointers on how he could use flashcards to increase his fluency. And yes, I used the word fluency. I feel that my teaching philosophy can best be explained with an adage that I was introduced to in another position: Keep the student at the center of every decision you make. This guides my planning and instruction every single day. I remember that students are the reason I am here, and the "easy" approach for me may not be what is best for them. My aim is to make sure that my students understand the material, which requires me to assess mastery in a variety of manners. There is no one way to teach or assess a student, so, as a teacher, I cannot give up. I enjoy being innovative and spending my free time researching new technologies or approaches to a subject. It is my goal to always be a student of my field so I do not forget a student's mentality. Students should be able to also apply information from my class to their outside lives. It is my hope that they feel empowered after gaining skills in my course so that they can better their lives, as well as the world. My students do not just learn how to write; they learn how powerful writing can influence those in control. They see the power in words and want to use them rather than have to use them. Discussions take on a life of their own as I carefully poke at their logic to make them use their critical thinking skills. We do not just turn in a paper and move on - we use those same skills, but apply them in different ways all throughout the course. Language is life, and we need to learn control over it to succeed.

I am a Recording Arts graduate from Full Sail University with a passion for all things music. I love exploring analysis and statistics, and understanding the "why" behind everything. My favorite subject to teach is Music Mixing, as it is a deep rabbit hole of both technical and creative ability. I believe teaching is about understanding the information, not just memorization of it. Outside of music, I also like to play games and exercise often.

I am a native of Pawtucket, Rhode Island. I have played guitar for over ten years and am an avid sports fan. I enjoy reading and learning new ideas, as well as keeping up to date with current events. Tutoring was once a hobby, but now is one of my passions. I enjoy giving students the edge to succeed in their studies as well as helping them mature mentally in their approach to learning. I have taught various subjects at various levels, from elementary to college. I have also helped many students with test preparation for the ACT and SAT in particular, but I am always open to transferring these skills to other placement exams or test prep needs. I feel proud when my students tell me of their success. It encourages me to continue working hard and improving my teaching abilities so that students can benefit from someone who can convey information well to them. My goals is to be of great assistance to students who are either striving for the highest goals or struggling to put the pieces together. With both ends of the spectrum, I am willing to lend every faculty I possess to help my students achieve their goals and push further.

I am a graduate of Florida Atlantic University with a bachelor's degree in English. I am currently finishing up my Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Full Sail University. Since graduating from FAU, I've worked with homeless and foster youth in New York. Then, I traveled to California where I worked with AmeriCorps to counsel and tutor high school students in underserved communities. I am a proud advocate of education. To me, knowledge is power. With being a poet, I have a natural love and appreciation for words. This converted into my interest in English and Literature. Currently, I am a 6th grade Language Arts teacher. I teach a range of students who require me to be versatile in my teaching methods. I believe every student should receive all the help they need in order to truly be the best student they can be. Along with poetry, my other interests include reading, writing, painting, and gaming.
