In every tutorial setting-- whether it's with master's and PhD candidates, middle school students, or high school students on AP, honors, or regular class levels-- I have always placed the student first. I'm easygoing and friendly, but persistent and focused. I ask questions, but none you can't handle-- or that we can't work through together, without judgement. I go at your pace, but with an urgency that gets results. My favorite part of tutoring is the process of discovery. When the student reaches an outcome on their own, after a process of inquiry, it's truly a unique and uplifting moment. In high school I scored a 5 on both the AP Literature and Composition exams. I also scored a 4 on AP US History. As a student at St. John's University, I was a writing consultant for one of the leading writing centers in the country-- the Institute for Writing Studies, led by Harry Denny (now at Purdue), Tom Philipose, and Alison Perry. Finally, for the past year I tutored full-time as an AmeriCorps Urban Education Fellow at a charter school in Newark, NJ. I specialized in AP Literature instruction, and was the AP Literature Teacher's Assistant.

Education is the key to discovery, and teachers should act as a guides towards their student's self-discovery. Tutoring is an amazing way to connect with students and relate their educational experiences to the real world. I see test preparation as a key that can open doors and I love to work with students of all ages to help them gain more opportunities and motivate them to read, write, and think!I am a 9th grade history teacher and have been in education for six years. I am currently a Master’s candidate at Seton Hall University pursuing my M.A. in Diplomacy and International Relations. I graduated in 2013 cum laude at Virginia Commonwealth University with a B.A. in Political Science, and I minored in both Economics and Religious Studies. My academic strengths include:Writing - I am proficient many forms of academic writingHistory - I am expected to understand the political climate, government structure, and contemporary history of as many countries as I can handleStandardized test prep - I myself have taken many standardized examsOther social sciences - I took every AP social science course offeredI first started tutoring when I myself was in high school; helping the local middle school students with the homework they were most struggling with. I have two siblings who are now in high school turning to me for tips to succeed. I have also recently helped a number of my frightened peers practice and plan for their GREs. I understand the patience and the process involved in helping someone find their confidence and their mechanisms for success when approaching any subject material. My hobbies include reading. I read in parks, in cafés, on my couch, on vacation. To me, reading is the biggest luxury, and my favorite activity. When I am on break from school, I read nearly every day. Occasionally I also enjoy walking around the mountains and going to events in the city.

I have always had a passion for teaching and sharing knowledge with others. During my undergraduate studies, I volunteered tutoring elementary school students in the area. I even continued tutoring others while being a full time student in law school. Those who seek knowledge are seeking to enrich their lives and I am honored to be a part of that process. My past tutoring experience has helped me develop the patience to work with students of all ages. Lastly, I believe that all people have the potential to be great if they are made aware of what their talents are.

"Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever"-Gandhiji. This quote by Gandhiji reflects the way my life is lived and the personality developed by living this lifestyle.Reflecting on my educational experiences, I appreciate the immeasurable impact that teachers make on the lives of their students. I also realize that the skills and knowledge acquired in the classroom will be used by students throughout their lives. Therefore, as a tutor, I hope to have an impact on my students lives. My tutoring method follows what I call the 4 Es for success.EMPOWERMENT: Encourage students through the process of personal development planning to integrate academic learning with life and everyday experience.ENHANCE: Provide academic support and guidance enabling the students to reach their full potential.ENGAGE: Employ appropriate, innovative, and diverse methods of assessment that lead to progressive development of knowledge and understanding.ENABLE: Give to the student the best knowledge and understanding of the material.

A lot of students think they can't write. Not true -- everybody can do it! Do you text? Post items to social media like Facebook or Twitter? Can you make your friends laugh at, think about, or in any other way react to what you say in print? Then you're already at least halfway towards becoming someone who can communicate effectively in any setting, including the classroom. Writing, essentially, is speaking, except using your keyboard or a pen instead of your voice. You're probably a lot better at it than you think.I know what I'm talking about. I worked as a newspaper editor for more than 10 years, coaching young, 20-something reporters in the craft of journalism. Everyone I've worked with during my career --40 or 50 reporters -- has come to the task with the basics already in place. My job was not to build the engine from scratch but merely to fine-tune it.A little more about me: I'm a published book author and a newspaper reporter with about 10,000 published articles to my name and counting. If you're in the market for an easygoing but very experienced coach, let's talk!
