As a future special education teacher and current substitute teacher, I am excited to become a tutor with Varsity Tutors. I am currently enrolled in the MEd + Licensure special education program at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and am set to begin my studies in August of 2017.My background includes working as a substitute teacher during the 2016-2017 school year for multiple districts in Columbus, OH. These districts were urban, suburban, and rural in nature. I served as a substitute teacher in both general and special education classrooms at the elementary, middle, and high school level. In addition, I accepted two long-term assignments throughout the year; one in a special needs preschool classroom, and another in a math and reading resource room at the 3rd-5th grade level.Previously, while earning a bachelor's degree in Psychology, I worked as a tutor in the athletic department at West Virginia University. I conducted both individual and small group sessions, and created written study materials for my students. In my free time, I volunteered in a special needs Transition classroom at the University, and worked at a recreation center for individuals with disabilities in the Morgantown area.I am excited to be in the Chicagoland region and work in the urban setting. I am fully committed to working with a diverse group of students from many backgrounds and of all abilities. I believe my past experience and my dedication to education make me an ideal tutor!

I am a recent graduate of Wake Forest University. I graduated, with honors, with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Chemistry with a concentration in biochemistry. During my time at Wake Forest University I worked as tutor in the Chemistry Department. I tutored fellow students in general and organic chemistry. I clarified chemical concepts, explained chemical structures and mechanisms, and further developed friendships with a variety of students. In addition to tutoring I became an adviser and reassured my peers that chemistry was not impossible to conquer and encouraged them to keep persevering. I am more than happy not only to help solve other's problems, but also inspire others to maybe one day love chemistry as much as I do. I also tutored a local high schooler during my last semester at Wake Forest University. I explained chemical concepts, reviewed class material and homework, and provided test taking skills for her upcoming AP Chemistry Exam. I not only have a passion for chemistry but also to help others excel because I know what it is like to be in their shoes. Some of my favorite moments in the past have been when students reach their "aha!" moment because I explained something in a creative way or gave them a funny saying in order to remember something. I can't wait to help others reach their "aha!" moment.

I teach my students to think, to understand the concepts rather than memorize an exercise. I understand that everyone is different; therefore, it is necessary to look for different teaching strategies for each individual. Teaching is for me very rewarding, one gets immediate feedback. When a student improves the teaching objectives are met.

10th Grade Tutor • +99 Subjects
My first experience teaching, as a private tutor in my high school years, revealed the deep insecurities we all carry as students. To a 6th grader, the thought of algebra was so frightening and intimidating that any reasoning disintegrated. So, we followed the mantra Algebra is not magic, reminding the student in times when she faltered that she can think through a math problem. As long as she felt grounded enough to access her innate understanding of the world around us, she progressed. Later on, my extensive experience in the classroom as a Jumpstart Corps Member taught me to adapt my teaching style to each childs needs. While some learned better through mnemonics and letter-to-word associations, others preferred to process information and teach content back to me themselves. The greatest lesson I've learned as a tutor is to first step back and let a student tell me their goals, show me how they take in information, and point me in the direction of the challenging areas. With this information, I can help students build their own learning and testing strategy to accomplish their goals.

Frequently Asked Questions
Film history requires students to synthesize multiple skills at once: understanding technical filmmaking concepts, recognizing historical context, analyzing visual storytelling, and forming critical arguments about artistic merit. Many students struggle to connect formal film analysis (shot composition, editing, sound design) with the broader social and political movements that shaped cinema. Additionally, students often find it challenging to move beyond plot summary to discuss how a film's techniques convey meaning—a key skill for essays and exams. Personalized tutoring helps students break down these interconnected skills and develop a framework for analyzing films systematically.
In a classroom setting, students typically move through film history chronologically, watching clips or full films with limited time for deep analysis. Personalized tutoring allows tutors to focus on the specific areas where a student struggles—whether that's understanding montage theory, writing analytical essays, or connecting film movements to historical events. Tutors can also tailor their approach to match how a student learns best, whether through watching complete films, analyzing specific scenes, discussing ideas verbally, or creating visual study guides. This targeted approach helps students develop critical thinking skills faster and with greater confidence than general classroom instruction alone.
Successful film history students need to master several interconnected skills: visual literacy (recognizing how cinematography, editing, and mise-en-scène create meaning), historical contextualization (understanding how films reflect and shape their cultural moment), analytical writing (constructing arguments supported by specific examples), and film terminology (fluently discussing techniques and movements). Students also benefit from developing research skills to explore lesser-known filmmakers and movements, as well as the ability to compare films across different eras and cultures. A strong tutor helps students build these skills progressively, starting with foundational analysis before moving to more complex comparative and theoretical work.
Great film history tutors combine deep subject knowledge with the ability to make complex concepts accessible. They should be able to explain film terminology clearly, provide specific examples from both canonical and lesser-known films, and help students understand the "why" behind artistic choices. Effective tutors also ask thoughtful questions that push students to analyze rather than just describe, model strong analytical writing, and help students see connections between film techniques and historical context. Additionally, they adapt their teaching based on a student's learning style and goals—whether that's preparing for an AP exam, writing a strong college essay about film, or simply deepening appreciation for cinema as an art form.
Students typically see measurable improvements in their ability to analyze films systematically, write stronger essays that move beyond plot summary to discuss technique and meaning, and retain information about movements and filmmakers. For exam preparation, students often gain confidence in timed essay writing and develop strategies for quickly analyzing unfamiliar films using formal vocabulary. Beyond grades, many students develop genuine critical thinking skills—the ability to question why filmmakers make specific choices and how those choices reflect broader cultural values. With consistent personalized instruction, students often shift from passively watching films to actively analyzing them, which deepens their appreciation for cinema and strengthens their overall analytical writing across all subjects.
Film history tutoring aligns with both AP Art and Design and standard high school social studies curricula, which increasingly emphasize media literacy and visual analysis. Common expectations include understanding major movements (Silent Era, German Expressionism, Neorealism, New Hollywood, etc.), recognizing key filmmakers and their contributions, analyzing how films reflect historical periods, and developing formal film analysis skills. Tutors ensure students master vocabulary like cinematography, mise-en-scène, montage, and diegetic sound while building the critical thinking skills assessed on standardized exams. Whether a student is in a general humanities course, AP Film History, or college-level cinema studies, personalized tutoring helps them meet grade-level expectations while building deeper understanding than classroom instruction alone typically allows.
Film theory—concepts like the "male gaze," auteur theory, or semiotics—can feel abstract without concrete examples and careful scaffolding. Effective tutors break complex theories into digestible pieces, then immediately apply them to specific scenes students can watch and discuss together. Rather than memorizing definitions, students learn to use theoretical frameworks as tools for deeper analysis. A tutor might help a student understand Laura Mulvey's ideas about gendered camera work by analyzing specific shots in classic Hollywood films, then encouraging the student to find their own examples. This approach transforms theory from intimidating jargon into practical, useful ways of thinking about how films create meaning—skills that transfer to literary analysis, art history, and critical thinking more broadly.
