I'm a New York State licensed special and elementary education teacher and have two Master's degrees in special education and public administration. I have instructed both regular and special education students ranging from Nursery - 12th grade. I consider myself to be a talented and creative tutor who keeps students engaged by breaking down academic materials in an easy to understand format. I also possess a keen sense of humor that keeps students relaxed, focusd and most importantly learning to enjoy subject matter that had been previousy difficult. My tutoring philisophy is one that tries various approaches to help students. Every student learns differently and I feel it's my responsibility to find a teaching methodology that your child connects to.

I am a freshman at Columbia University, currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science. In high school, I was a member of Mu Alpha Theta where I taught students geometry and algebra for two years. I tutor Computer Science, Math subjects up to Calculus III, Physics, and ACT Prep. In my tutoring experiences, I find that learning and adapting to your interests and areas of expertise helps you understand the material on a much deeper level. In my free time, I typically program applications and games in C, C++, Python, and Java.

I come from a newspapering family. My father and my uncle were both newspaper editors, and my son Joel has carried on the tradition by being a reporter for the Atlantic City Press (and marrying an editor). One thing my father taught me was that there was no such thing as a useless piece of information. Anything you might know could show up in a newspaper story you are editing. For example, what is the name of Don Quixote's horse? (It's "Rozinante"). This came across my father's desk twice in one week in stories he was editing---and both times it was misspelled. One interest my father passed on to me was Civil War history. This was useful on two occasions, once when a visiting Australia and a writer said he was interested in seeing Civil War battlefields and I took him to see the Manassas, Antietam, and Gettysburg battlefields, and once when I was asked to write an encyclopedia article on Mathematics in the Civil War.Other interests I have acquired from my father were Wild West history, American history in general, and the sciences. I, however, did not pick up his taste for detective stories (outside of Sherlock Holmes). In the first grade my father showed me how to add with carrying, and I have been interested in mathematics ever since. I did not realize how much I was interested in math until the seventh grade when I was entered in a mental arithmetic contest. I did not win, but I did well, and ever since if I don't have a calculator, or pencil and paper handy, I will do arithmetic in my head. The same year I was placed in a class which studied the "new math" rather than traditional mathematics courses. I think I was a shining example of what the new math could do. However, in college, it was disappointing to discover that everything "new" about the new math was covered in one term of my abstract algebra class.I graduated from high school on Memorial Day weekend and the following Tuesday I started my first job in a computer center. This was back in punch-card days, and my job was mainly to sort punch cards before feeding them into the computer. I have been working with computers ever since, and in addition to a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, I have a Master's degree in Computer Engineering. For fifteen years I worked for the Department of the Army. For most of that time I wrote and ran war-games on the computer (not video games, but the type of war games that would involve a long list of Army units and sometimes took months to complete). Other systems I programmed included the Army budget, personnel, and the Pentagon car pool assignments. Once when a piece of paperwork was missing, I called Personnel. The woman who answered the phone said not to worry, they had a wonderful computer program that kept track of that particular paperwork. "Ma'am," I said, "I wrote that program." (And I had.) The same day she tracked down the missing paperwork for me.My last assignment for the Army was planning office automation for the Corps of Engineers and writing the specifications for their new computers. After that I started working for a contractor with the Federal Aviation Administration. This time I was not a programmer but a software tester. I worked at the FAA's Technical Center in Egg Harbor Township, where we had computer systems that were exact duplicates of the ones air traffic controllers used in the field. Software written for the controllers was always sent to the Technical Center first for us software testers to hack away at. This was fascinating because not only did it use my years of experience in writing software, it also required me to have a detailed knowledge of just how controllers worked and what they did to control flights.I have also taught as a member of the adjunct faculty at Richard Stockton College. Courses I have taught have included Operations Research, Calculus, Statistics, and Microsoft OFFICE.Now I am retired and looking for things to do to use my years of painfully acquired computer and mathematical skills and other knowledge. Helping students learn what I learned is my answer.

My teaching philosophy centers on empowering students to think critically and independently as well as how to think rather than what to think. I am a certified ESL teacher as well as teaching History at the local community college. Being an ESL teacher gives me the opportunity to bridge language and cultures, which is something I am passionate about. History is the perfect subject to encourage students to think critically and independently. History, whether it is personal/family or state or national or world, provides an identity and moral understanding. I find it exciting when students move beyond parroting what I say or what the readings say to draw their conclusions and back up their statements with facts. By examining the past, students learn so much more about the present, as well as develop the abilities to use logic, problem-solve, assess evidence and conflicting interpretations, and understand past examples of change. These abilities transition into working life skills as well as develop responsible public behavior no matter if they are a national or community leader, an informed voter, or an observer.Geographically, my life has been all "over the world." Not only have these opportunities fueled my lifelong interest in world history and politics, but they have also developed my passion for delving into American history and politics. Teaching is not just a "job" to me, but rather a privilege that carries significant responsibilities.

I graduated with honors from the College of Letters at Wesleyan University in 2013. As a part of my undergraduate program of study, I spent a semester at the University of Bologna in Italy and completed a thesis project. While at Wesleyan, I tutored Elementary students and fellow undergraduates. During the year after I graduated, I worked as an English instructor in South Korea. I am comfortable with a wide range of subjects, but I have a particular fondness for history and literature, and I am particularly experienced at helping students with their writing. I'm currently working my way through the required courses to apply to Medical School, and I'm excited to share my newfound passion for the sciences with younger students. I believe that academic success can lead students to personal growth as well as a brighter future. I enjoy helping my students achieve their goals, whether they are seeking to master a subject they find challenging or improve their scores on a standardized test. When I'm not studying (or at the lab) myself, I'm either at dance class, cooking a large meal for my friends, or appreciating the arts at a performance, gallery, or museum.

For the last two years, I've helped students of all ages and levels strengthen their grasp on the basics of good writing. From improving simple structure and syntax to developing a personal voice to expanding vocabulary, I've developed exercises that run the gamut of grammar and mechanics. As a former journalist, I am meticulous to a fault with these elements, and take great pride in my ability to make any student's writing cleaner, tighter and grammatically correct. On the content side of things, I've worked with creative writing majors, teaching them the ins and outs of building narrative arcs, creating three-dimensional characters, setting scenes and twisting plotlines. Regardless of the assignment, if it's writing-based, the odds are good that I have experience helping a student improve in the same area. The ability to write with clarity and individuality is not easily obtained. It's a concrete craft as much as it is a way of thinking, and it embodies a skill that's as rare as it is undervalued. Sometimes it involves breaking the rules you have been taught. Often it involves scrapping your work and starting from scratch. But when you realize you've got it, you will know you have acquired a skill that will serve you well in almost any kind of college class and career. It's a concrete craft as much as it is a way of thinking, and a true hallmark of an intelligent mind. I take pieces of fiction and nonfiction, reportage and feature stories, classroom submissions and personal statements, and help students' instill in them the universal principles of good writing. I love my job; my enthusiasm for it is endless, because it's legitimately fun to me.But on a more normal level, I???m a sports and music buff who, thanks to TiVo, hasn???t missed an episode of Jeopardy in years

I was once in the same shoes of many Varsity Tutors' students. I was struggling to learn my subjects and preparing for the SAT standardized test. I came from a rural high school (DuBois, PA) with no AP classes as well as no Honors classes. I was projected that engineering would be too difficult for me and that I should pursue something less rigorous. I ended up graduating with a Honors degree in chemical engineering and a minor in mathematics from the Pennsylvania State University. I then received a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University doing all of my research work with Sandia National Laboratories. I achieved these goals by setting high expectations for myself and striving every day to meet these expectations. I am a tutor that predominantly focuses on STEM and Business subjects from high school through graduate school as well as standardized tests. I really do not have a favorite subject here. I just enjoy teaching students who desire to learn and improve themselves. When I was an undergraduate student as well as a teaching assistant in graduate school teaching first semester students, I could take a person the night before the exam that had no clue of what was going on in class and help them achieve a B on the exam the next day. Standardized tests such as the SAT/ACT exam comprise various courses in high school and I cannot teach someone everything they need to know in one night or if a person is weeks behind in the understanding of the course material. Whether it is a standardized test or learning another subject; an assessment must be determined of where the student is currently in their understanding of the material. Next a game plan must be put together to get the student from where they are currently at to where they want to go. The fact of the matter is unless a student has always struggled in mathematics since kindergarten, they can achieve a perfect or near perfect score on the SAT/ACT mathematics section. The only traits that are required are a high level of expectations as well as the desire and effort to achieve those expectations. When it comes to solving problems, I will always ask the student on how they would solve a particular problem. Their answers can range that they definitely know how to solve it to they have absolutely no idea. I would then guide them along through each problem with the goal to have them understand a correct approach needed and to instill in the student a better understanding of the material as time goes along. As far as more information about myself, I am a person that enjoys learning and growing in all pursuits and my favorite hobby is working out and lifting weights at my local Planet Fitness. Additional Information: I am a STEM based tutor for Varsity Tutors in which I tutor everything from entry level to advanced subjects in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, all Engineering disciplines, and MBA courses. I am continuously adding both courses in an individual field as well as fields themselves to tutor. I tutor from 6th grade to graduate school as well as students with mental disabilities. I help students from inner city schools to the top boarding schools in the US to state public universities as well as the ivy league. I work with students at international universities along with international students in the US as well as adults going back to school.
