The drive to become a better person includes a desire to leave the world a better place than I found it. I am an Executive Board Member of one of the largest community service groups on campus, the West Philadelphia Tutoring Project, so I have had plenty of experience tutoring elementary and middle school students in reading and math in the Philadelphia area. Prior to my experience tutoring in Philadelphia, I ran an online writing program teaching essential writing skills to elementary school students and served as an Algebra I instructor at a local community center. I enjoy tutoring math up to Algebra 2, SAT Math, and editing essays (including college essays) because helping students build math foundations that will help them for the rest of their life is rewarding and I greatly enjoy editing essays! This experience inspired me to become a New York City substitute teacher and enroll in Teachers College, Columbia University. I graduated from Teachers College with a M.A. in Elementary Inclusive Education with a Gifted Extension and became a middle school math teacher. One of my instructional approaches that has resonated with both parents and students is to integrate students' lives into classroom content. As a result, students tend to become more engaged in active inquiry in the classroom and take ownership of their learning environment. In addition, I support the notion that a teacher should celebrate students' successes and nurture their academic and personal growth. One of my successes is that all of my students have consecutively passed statewide examinations.

I love teaching and learning. To me, it is a life-long pursuit, with an infinite reward. I understand that science and math can be challenging, as they were for me when I was in school. I was fortunate to have some incredible teachers that helped me in ways that empowered my learning potential for the rest of my life.My approach is to help you figure out what tools you need to succeed, in both the specific subject matter as well as skills that are required for acquiring knowledge in general. By learning concepts, and how things work on the most basic level, we can build together a more complex understanding. I avoid memorization when possible because I don't believe that will stick with you in the end. I want you to be able to think through problems, derive formulas when necessary, and apply both rational and creative thinking to understand material.Although I have not tutored extensively, I bring 15 years of practical science research experience, contributing to 9 publications in the field of cancer research.
