I am a multi-media artist based in MN. I earned a BA in Cinema and Media Studies from Carleton College in 2016. In addition, I completed my IB diploma in 2012 from the International School of Geneva, Switzerland. I am passionate about teaching. As an artist, I am always seeking creative solutions to problems. This is part of why I am drawn to teaching. The act of teaching/tutoring requires creativity and awareness. As a tutor, I think it's important for me to be able to adapt my teaching methods to match the learning styles of my students and find dynamic ways to engage students with the subject material.

Discovering how you learn is as important as the actual subjects you wish to learn. I believe that my students best succeed when they develop an awareness of their educational strengths and weaknesses. I believe in emphasizing healthy study routines, the courage to learn from failure, and an openness to change.Like my students, I expect that I will also learn from my practice and refine my teaching style. I welcome open discussions of ways to improve each tutoring session.

What better way is there to apply knowledge than to explain to others? I enjoy giving abstract concepts substance by discussing them with others, among peers and students alike. The action is also enjoyable on a social level-- there is nothing quite like navigating new material with someone else. It's an opportunity for both of us to discover new ways to relate with what we are learning. It's these sentiments that have made studying Chemistry at Emory University a great experience so far. It's also why I like to tutor Algebra. The subject is all about relationships, and becomes so applicable in other natural sciences. Because of it's versatility, there's a multitude of ways to connect concepts. I like to relate new material with knowledge a student already possesses by outlining these connections. I've found this method to be very effective with my little sister, as well as students at Kumon Learning Centers.Outside of academia, I enjoy running, reading and swing dance. I'm involved with my campus American Sign Language club, as well as residence life.

I have received my Bachelor of Arts in Multimedia with a focus in image and minor in Business Administration from Loyola Marymount University. Currently, I am working to get my Masters in Secondary Education, also from LMU. In addition to my Masters, I hope to earn my Teaching Credentials as well. As an undergrad, I tutored for the Academic Resource Center on campus for about two years; I have worked one-on-one with students as well as worked with a group of up to 15 students. In addition to this, I mentored for CollegeSpring, a SAT prep program, during the summer after graduation. At the end of the summer, my student's average scores increased by 200-300 points.Because I was an art major in college, I am a bit out of practice when it comes to Pre-Calculus and such, but math was my best subject in school and I can pick it up again quickly as I have seen in my experience with CollegeSpring. Math is my favorite subject because solving problems is like solving a puzzle; there are many ways to go about finding the solution but, at least for this level of math, there is only one answer. The subjects I feel the most confident tutoring are SAT Math, Algebra or below, Public Speaking, and Essay Editing/ Writing. From my experience as both a student and a tutor, I find that the best way to teach students is to leave the pen/pencil in their hands for at least 90% of the time. Although it is vital to give examples and work through problems together, the tutor's job is not to give answers and simply show how problems are done. This may cause students to memorize techniques rather than learn the critical thinking process that allows them to do work on their own. I strongly believe that my job as a tutor is to ask the student questions that will assist them to arrive at an answer on their own. Of course, examples need to be given and I may give more help in the beginning, but the goal is to ween students off help after time. I cannot stand over their shoulder during tests or be there as they go through college so they must learn how to approach work on their own.Outside of work and school, I enjoy cooking, exercise, and drawing. The way food affects our mood, body, and health intrigues me- which is why I love cooking. In addition to food, a healthy mind and body must have proper exercise. While I may not be the best when it comes to running, I have started weight training and am looking for other ways to get cardio into my routine which includes hikes. Drawing, however, remains my passion. While it is time consuming and I do not have as much time for it as I used to, I love figure drawing, impressionist painting, and illustrating cartoons.

I am passionate about helping students because I remember the feeling when I felt lost in class and had a hard time understanding what was even going on. I previously tutored elementary students for two years and loved every moment. Majority of the time, I tutor elementary students with English and Math. However, I have also taught a few classrooms English (like learning the body parts) when I travelled to Rwanda and Cambodia. I loved teaching children English in a fun way. I believe that learning should be fun and it's the teacher/tutor's responsibility to find the right way of teaching for every student (especially when it comes to 1:1 tutoring or even when teaching young students).

I have many years of experience in teaching Chemistry courses including General, Organic, and Biochemistry courses in college and university levels. I Work directly with students on the material, providing the notes and problem solving. I believe as a tutor, my teaching methods should encompass breadth facets of student needs. Chemistry is a subject which includes both theoretical (e.g. crude facts, reactions, reagents, etc..) and experimental aspects. Many students try to learn the materials by just memorizing the reactions and their concepts. In my opinion, we should try to promote the learning of chemistry through a more profound mechanistic approach. Students should be given the opportunity to participate in their parts for learning and achieving their objectives. As a tutor, I will do my best to help students work toward their goals. In my free time, I enjoy running, swimming, watching TV, and listening to music.

I love learning--maybe in part because I have had to learn a lot due to my lifestyle. Growing up between Ecuador, Canada, Spain, and the U.S. granted me many opportunities to learn and adapt. It also gave me the experience of being the learner many different times-- academically, after public school, private school, home school, and college in these countries I have a more varied experience of education. Now, as an educator, I enjoy coming alongside different learners and enabling and empowering them to reach their personal and academic goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students across Tucson's 427 schools and all 67 school districts with personalized tutoring. Whether your student attends a school in the Tucson Unified School District, Sunnyside, Sahuarita, or any other local district, we can match them with a tutor who understands Arizona's academic standards and local curriculum expectations.

Tucson's average student-teacher ratio of 15.2:1 means individual students often don't get the focused attention they need in the classroom. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction fills that gap by providing dedicated support tailored to your student's specific learning style, pace, and goals—something that's difficult to achieve in a traditional classroom setting.

Tucson students commonly seek tutoring in math, English, science, and test preparation (SAT, ACT, and AP exams). We also work with students on Arizona-specific requirements like passing the AIMS exam and meeting state standards. Whatever subject your student is struggling with or wants to excel in, Varsity Tutors can connect you with an expert tutor.

Tutors who work with Tucson students are familiar with Arizona's K-12 standards and graduation requirements, including proficiency expectations in English language arts, math, science, and social studies. They can help students close specific skill gaps, prepare for state assessments, and build confidence in areas where they're falling behind—ensuring they're on track to meet Arizona's benchmarks.

The first session is focused on getting to know your student—their learning style, current challenges, and goals. The tutor will assess where they stand academically, identify specific areas that need support, and create a personalized plan moving forward. This foundation helps ensure that every future session is targeted and effective.

Tutoring rates vary based on the subject, tutor expertise, and your student's grade level. We offer flexible options to fit different budgets, and many families find that the focused, personalized instruction delivers strong results that justify the investment. Contact us for a consultation to discuss pricing and find a tutoring plan that works for your family.

Many students show noticeable improvement within 4-6 weeks of consistent tutoring, though the timeline depends on their starting point and how frequently they work with their tutor. Building strong academic skills is a process, and the most sustainable results come from regular, focused practice. Your tutor will track progress and adjust strategies to keep your student moving forward.

Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors who have strong subject expertise and experience teaching or tutoring their area. Many hold degrees in their subject, have classroom teaching experience, or bring specialized knowledge—like test prep certification or advanced subject mastery. When we match your student with a tutor, we ensure they're well-qualified to help your student succeed.
