Session Summaries by Physics Tutors

Woodland, CA Physics tutoring
The student and I had a good session. She has finals this week, so we went through part of a giant review assignment that her teacher had given out. On the questions that we worked on today, the student did a good job understanding what she should do, but had trouble understanding where to start. She should work on defining the basics that each question refers to before trying to determine the answer. This will help her predictions be more accurate. Good luck on the final!

The student and I reviewed the Physics topics of forces and Newton's laws. We also went over problems involving these topics. This was in preparation for an upcoming Physics exam. By the end of the session, she demonstrated that she understood the material by solving the problems correctly.

The student and I reviewed work, energy, and power. I began with explaining work, with additional focus on what it means and how it works with vectors that aren't parallel, then moved into potential and kinetic energy, and then energy conservation problems, working through a detailed roller coaster problem. We finished with power, and went over her answers to some lab questions she had related to power.

The student and I spent our session reviewing for her upcoming final, beginning with her first exam on kinematics. She worked through the problems sequentially, applying the solution techniques we've discussed throughout the semester: drawing; listing knowns, unknowns and equations; and calculating. She seemed intimidated by the material at first. However, she worked through 1 and 2-dimensional problems with minimal input. She seemed more confident at the end of the session. We agreed to meet twice next week for final review sessions covering kinematics, forces, torque, and energy.

The student and I spent the first hour of the session starting on a research project he has to do for his physics class. The research project is slightly different than his first one, as this one is based around a specific career in the science fields. After starting the research project, we worked on Coulomb's Law, which is the only E&M topic that will appear on his final. The student and I spent the final 30-minutes of the session working on dilations and proportions.

The student and I went over accelerated motion problems. She did all of the examples online, and ended up on a really good note. She was getting them all right. The only thing I made sure to point out was to focus on the direction of the velocity and to make them positive or negative accordingly. We also went over constant acceleration and the related equations. We still need to practice this on Sunday.
