I've always loved school and learning. At the core of my teaching philosophy is the idea that anyone can learn anything, so long as the instructor is willing to teach to the student's style of learning. After years of teaching English as a second language and helping friends with college essays, I am so excited to be formally tutoring. It will give me a chance to exercise my passion both for education and working with others. In the past as an instructor and research assistant I had to adapt to the needs of struggling students and enjoyed thinking creatively to best serve a variety of learners. Though my résumé goes into detail about my relevant previous experiences, here is a summary of who I am and what I have done as it pertains to our future work together:*Graduated from Sarah Lawrence College*Fluent in Italian after studying abroad at the University of Florence*Served as research assistant to the Environmental Science and Italian departments*TEFL certified*Has taught ESL in the United States, Italy, and Poland*Has helped friends and acquaintances with college essay writing for years*Cook, printmaker, illustrator, and avid readerFrom an early age I have been graced with marvelous educators who in turn inspired me to invest my time in others' academic careers. As someone who has consistently demonstrated an interest in teaching, it would be my pleasure to help even more students understand how they can work with their particular strengths in order to reach their goals.I am looking forward to meeting you!

I recently moved to Spokane, WA from Alaska where I taught for 16 years around the state in sixth grade and middle school. I am an elementary school teacher with a passion for language arts, math, and thinking outside of the box! I have worked with many students with different learning styles, needs, abilities, and personalities. As a tutor, I will provide support and reinforcement of topics being taught in the classroom. I will help the student work through the problem and give them opportunities to figure out the answer on their own without feeding it to them. I want to give the students confidence in their abilities to transform them into better problem solvers and thinkers. I will provide feedback and challenge my students to dig deeper and make decisions on their own with guidance and support. As a tutor, it is important to provide a positive, safe, encouraging, and fun learning environment. I will help students gain an appreciation for school and learning. The end goal in mind, other than solving the problem correctly or finishing up the assignment, is to feel a sense of accomplishment and success, which will increase the student's motivation for learning.Outside of tutoring, I enjoy a plethora of activities. This includes traveling and experiencing cultures, reading, cooking, arts and crafts, DIY home projects, watching movies, playing in my garden, riding my pink cruiser bike, and embarking on adventures with my husband.

Nevertheless, I have always carried a profound interest in teaching and tutoring throughout my career while working on Wall Street and within the financial industry. In particular, I enjoy English literature, mathematics, the sciences as well as learning and teaching languages. With time, I increasingly became aware of my fondness for tutoring and teaching while helping youngsters, adolescents and adults alike with a variety of subjects and thus, decided to dedicate my time further to tutoring and teaching.

I have worked for 4 years as a peer-tutor, helping my fellow students with every kind of composition problem. I have extensive experience in broad-scale tutoring, including but not limited to: thesis formation, essay structure, logical flow, and aesthetic flow. Small-scale tutor challenges also play to my strengths as I excel in word-choice and improving sentence dynamics.Apart from most tutors, I engage in a compassionate-style of tutoring, employing heavy focus on encouragement and reframing writing as a type of "play." Writing is an intimate expression of oneself and I look to grow student abilities through an expansive, indirect approach.

I've been tutoring in New York City for about five years. During that time, I exploited the knowledge I'd acquired as a high school student and undergraduate, but I also broadened my repertoire to cover new topics. I've since tutored most high school, college, and graduate school entrance exams. I've worked with students of all ages on grade-level studies in math, science, the humanities and foreign languages. Students at top high schools like Stuyvesant and Brooklyn Tech are especially engaging to work with due to the challenging nature of the material and the lively mind of the student. In addition to my own tutoring practice, I've also been director of a non-profit tutoring center. Under my administration we tracked students' scores and attained the highest average grade increase in the program's history. By guiding other tutors and consulting students for feedback on their experience, I got a very keen sense of what works and what doesn't.In tutoring, I focus on results, but not to exclusion. I want to provide the student with a meaningful experience. That is to say, I aim to cultivate an appreciation for math, science, and/or the humanities that will last into college and their career.Unwilling to compromise my love for language or my affinity for math and problem solving, I am currently pursuing a Master's degree in Computational Linguistics, the interface between computer science and human language. Fluent in Spanish and German, I also study second language acquisition in my course and lab work. My hobbies include biking, camping, woodworking, travel, puzzles, writing, and lots of reading. I'm always excited to get to know new students.

I am a graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School, a specialized high school focused on science, math, and engineering. I currently attend the Macaulay Honors College at the Brooklyn College Campus, where I am taking a pre-med route, and obtaining my Bachelor of Science in Biology and my Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics. I have vast tutoring experience stemming from my dedication to a variety of tutorials over the years, and have experience working with children of all age groups, and various subjects. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about Science, Mathematics, and Writing Skills. I truly believe that each child has a different way of learning, and through experience, I have learned multiple methods to teach children and allow them to reach their best potential. Education is a vital role in life, and I believe that allowing children to get an ease in topics they have difficulty with, will allow them to love the subject and learning just as much as I love teaching it!

First of all, I love teaching. I am a 7th generation military member. I served 30 years in the Air Force. I had 19 separate assignments and did everything from being an Aide to a 3 Star General to being a Space Shuttle Flight Controller in NASA/Mission Control. I graduated from the University of Florida, the Air Force Institute of Technology, the Air Command and Staff College, and the Naval War College. I have taught a variety of subjects (math, leadership, customer service, national security studies, emergency management, and more) at a number of different universities. I truly enjoy helping students (young and old) gain an understanding of the subjects, which I teach. I am always available to my students (past and current) to provide advice and assistance.I have been certified by Varsity Tutors in a wide variety of subjects. I want to note that I have a son with severe ADHD; have worked with the IEP Program for 12 years; and understand the Americans with Disabilities Act.

I am originally from Houston, and a diehard Texans fan. I completed my undergraduate work at Pepperdine University in English, with my emphasis in writing and rhetoric and a concentration in film theory and Feminist rhetoric. While at Pepperdine, I also studied music, vocal emphasis, and had the opportunity to spend time in Germany working with a small opera company in Heidelberg. I was also a member and eventual president of the university’s improv troupe and had multiple internships in the publishing arena. It was during my time at Pepperdine that I discovered my love for tutoring!I first began as a writing tutor in the library’s writing center and eventually became a head tutor. At Pepperdine I tutored both graduate and undergraduate students in all stages of their writing process (e.g. idea development, organization, composition, etc). Outside of the writing center, I tutored elementary age students in reading, working mostly with those children that had been diagnosed with ADD and ADHD--as an adult with ADD, I found that one-on-one engagement with these students was most effective. While pursuing my graduate degree from the University of Massachusetts Boston, I maintained my busy tutoring endeavors, but worked exclusively with undergraduate freshman and sophomores. My work with tutoring guided me to the classroom, and I began teaching at the university level during my second year of graduate school. It was during this time I added literature to my repertoire of tutoring, and have found that a composition approach to literary tutoring is both fun and effective. I just finished my graduate work in May, moved to Virginia Beach, and I’m excited to get back to my passion!

I got my start teaching as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Rwanda, where I taught English to national park rangers and leadership skills to local high school students. Since then, I've taught students of all levels and subjects, from high school geography to graduate-level ecology. While I studied conservation science and ecology as a graduate student at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, I got my bachelor's degree in International Relations from the George Washington University, so I'm comfortable teaching humanities and social sciences as well as math and science.Teaching is the most rewarding job I've ever had. I love working with students to find what motivates them, and helping to achieve their goals. I particularly love teaching social sciences and writing. It's so great to see a light go on when you connect a concept in economics to a story students have heard in the news, or to see a student work through an essay until she has something that makes her truly proud. When I'm not tutoring, I enjoy cooking, being outdoors, reading, traveling, and listening to nerdy podcasts.

I am passionate about academic success and very knowledgeable in college and medical school preparation.
