I recently moved to Spokane, WA from Alaska where I taught for 16 years around the state in sixth grade and middle school. I am an elementary school teacher with a passion for language arts, math, and thinking outside of the box! I have worked with many students with different learning styles, needs, abilities, and personalities.As a tutor, I will provide support and reinforcement of topics being taught in the classroom. I will help the student work through the problem and give them opportunities to figure out the answer on their own without feeding it to them. Nevertheless, I have always carried a profound interest in teaching and tutoring throughout my career while working on Wall Street and within the financial industry. In particular, I enjoy English literature, mathematics, the sciences as well as learning and teaching languages.With time, I increasingly became aware of my fondness for tutoring and teaching while helping youngsters, adolescents and adults alike with a variety of subjects and thus, decided to dedicate my time further to tutoring and teaching.

I currently attend the Macaulay Honors College at the Brooklyn College Campus, where I am taking a pre-med route, and obtaining my Bachelor of Science in Biology and my Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics. I have vast tutoring experience stemming from my dedication to a variety of tutorials over the years, and have experience working with children of all age groups, and various subjects. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about Science, Mathematics, and Writing Skills. I truly believe that each child has a different way of learning, and through experience, I have learned multiple methods to teach children and allow them to reach their best potential. I want to note that I have a son with severe ADHD; have worked with the IEP Program for 12 years; and understand the Americans with Disabilities Act.

I completed my undergraduate work at Pepperdine University in English, with my emphasis in writing and rhetoric and a concentration in film theory and Feminist rhetoric. While at Pepperdine, I also studied music, vocal emphasis, and had the opportunity to spend time in Germany working with a small opera company in Heidelberg. I was also a member and eventual president of the university’s improv troupe and had multiple internships in the publishing arena. It was during my time at Pepperdine that I discovered my love for tutoring!I first began as a writing tutor in the library’s writing center and eventually became a head tutor. At Pepperdine I tutored both graduate and undergraduate students in all stages of their writing process (e.g. idea development, organization, composition, etc). Outside of the writing center, I tutored elementary age students in reading, working mostly with those children that had been diagnosed with ADD and ADHD--as an adult with ADD, I found that one-on-one engagement with these students was most effective.While pursuing my graduate degree from the University of Massachusetts Boston, I maintained my busy tutoring endeavors, but worked exclusively with undergraduate freshman and sophomores. My work with tutoring guided me to the classroom, and I began teaching at the university level during my second year of graduate school. It was during this time I added literature to my repertoire of tutoring, and have found that a composition approach to literary tutoring is both fun and effective. I just finished my graduate work in May, moved to Virginia Beach, and I’m excited to get back to my passion!

I got my start teaching as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Rwanda, where I taught English to national park rangers and leadership skills to local high school students. Since then, I've taught students of all levels and subjects, from high school geography to graduate-level ecology. While I studied conservation science and ecology as a graduate student at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, I got my bachelor's degree in International Relations from the George Washington University, so I'm comfortable teaching humanities and social sciences as well as math and science.Teaching is the most rewarding job I've ever had. I love working with students to find what motivates them, and helping to achieve their goals. I particularly love teaching social sciences and writing. It's so great to see a light go on when you connect a concept in economics to a story students have heard in the news, or to see a student work through an essay until she has something that makes her truly proud. When I'm not tutoring, I enjoy cooking, being outdoors, reading, traveling, and listening to nerdy podcasts.

I am an admitted medical student pursuing a year of Spanish immersion in Valencia before matriculation. I completed my Bachelor of Science in Biology and minor in Chemistry at Virginia Commonwealth University in three years as part of the Guaranteed Admission Program for Medicine. I was admitted to this highly competitive BS/MD program on a full scholarship directly from high school. I am passionate about academic success and very knowledgeable in college and medical school preparation.
