Session Summaries by Math Tutors

Math Tutoring review by Kelie in Washington Park, IL
We worked on multi-step equations and multi-step inequalities. The student did very well with solving the different equations, though he sometimes forget to flip the sign in the event of multiplying or dividing by a negative. He made some small mistakes that he easily corrected. He did have a very hard time with the word problems, though. He's having difficulties setting up the equations from just the words. We will continue to work on this next session.

Math Tutoring review by Dana in Washington Park, IL
We spent this session on piecewise and discontinuous functions. The student had a good general idea of these going in, but we had a lot of details to iron out in order to be able to solve specific problems. We reviewed the formula for a line, graphing constants and inequalities, and translating a story problem into formulas. We also spent time on how to check whether you've solved a problem correctly by making sure all the mathematical pieces you've assembled make sense in the world where the story problem takes place.

Math Tutoring review by Laura in Washington Park, IL
The student had 4 worksheets to do for homework, consisting of subtraction, multiplication, and word problems. We skipped the warmups and went right to a review of the homework. The student completed the multiplication sheet first, and did very well - he seems to be improving on this. The longest worksheet was the subtraction/grouping worksheet, and the student assured me he would finish it before Monday. Good session overall.

Math Tutoring review by Elizabeth in Washington Park, IL
The student and I worked on adding and subtracting integers after having reviewed some of the geometry concepts we worked on previously. She still needs some review with the integers regarding the rules for adding positive and negative numbers. We mostly worked on being able to switch subtraction sentences to addition sentences. The student felt better about the concept. I reminded her that she needs to also memorize her multiplication facts.

Math Tutoring review by Amy in Washington Park, IL
We covered the domain and range of rational functions, as well as direct, indirect, and joint variation. In addition, we discussed how to add rational expressions and simplify them. The student has a great attitude toward learning.

Math Tutoring review by Maggie in Washington Park, IL
On Friday, the student worked on completing his math homework assignment, which consisted of a number of exercises from the book. He remembers what a domain is and how to find "extraneous answers" to equations with variables. After math, we did directed reading, where I skimmed through the 1984 questions and told him how many pages to read to find the answers. Then we discussed and he would write down the answer.
