My mission is to instill a love of learning in students by providing them with the necessary tools to succeed. I have over a decade of experience teaching in the classroom and providing tutoring in a broad range of subjects. In 2005 I graduated from New Saint Andrews College with a B.A. in Liberal Arts in Culture (Summa Cum Laude). Following this, I taught at a small high school for five years, providing instruction in many subjects, including history, literature, Latin, English composition, and SAT prep. Following this, I took a break from classroom teaching (as my husband and I decided to grow our family) and pursued individual tutoring opportunities in English composition and music instruction. I am now in my third year at a small elementary school where I oversee all curriculum and provide instruction in 3rd-6th grade math, Latin, and English composition. When I'm not teaching, I write historical fiction set during the Middle Ages and the British Regency and do copy editing for a small press that my husband and I co-own.

I am currently a student at the University of Oklahoma who has a minor in French and plans on obtaining my Bachelor's degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders and then my Master's degree in Speech Language Pathology. It is my passion to work with kids and to help them not only gain self-confidence, but to also improve their quality of life. My love for helping kids as well as my love for the French language are the main reasons I became a tutor. I am fluent in French and have have been learning the language since I was five years old. I attended an elementary school with an immersion program, where I learned everything in French. I am also able to speak the language at home with my mother who is a French teacher. The French language has provided me with so many opportunities that I want to be able to give back to other students. When it comes to my experience I have been tutoring since I was in the 5th grade. I started off in a tutoring program where I helped 1st graders learn to read French. Since then I have tutored kids ranging from 5 years old to students in college. Whether it is helping someone with basic grammar or teaching them how to analyze French literature, I have helped students through it all. One thing that sets me apart from most tutors is that I have recently been in the shoes of the student. I understand the curriculum that is being taught because I recently had to learn it myself. I am also still taking French courses, so I get to use my knowledge on a regular basis. As a tutor it is important to me that students enjoy learning French. It is a beautiful language and being tutored should not be something students dread. My goal is to make each session fun and interactive so that my students don't have to sit there and listen to me speak for the full session. If a child enjoys doing something, they will put in more work and retain more of the information. I will adjust my methods for each individual student because not everyone learns in the same way or at the same speed. I hope to provide insight and knowledge into the French language as well inspire students to pursue French in their futures by showing them all the amazing opportunities knowing another language can provide.

For over a decade I have dedicated myself to making second language acquisition more efficient. Language study and language comprehension is more than a passion of mine, it is the center of my career and personal life. I pride myself in my abilities to learn how my students learn so that I can relate the material to them. Many students have often commented on how fun and laid back my lessons are too. I love having fun; and to me, nothing is more fun than learning about languages. My background and experiences are diverse, which allows me to empathize with my students. You'll often find me asking lots of questions to better learn how you are learning so that I can help make sense of the material. Each lesson is a mini journey that leaves everyone excited for the next one. I can't wait to help you learn and see that lightbulb go off over your head.As a native speaker of English I have a natural understanding of how it should sound and what the grammar should be. My formal education in linguistics at Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA, USA allowed me to gain a much deeper understanding; and what's more, I took the majority of my classes in college in Spanish, French, and Mandarin Chinese. During my time in Taiwan, Germany, and France I gained a keen understanding of the Second Language Acquisition process from the perspective of the learner while being immersed. This background is what makes me well rounded, this is what drives me to be more effective as a tutor.

I received a Bachelor of Arts in French Studies from Bard College, after transferring from Middlebury College, where I studied English and Russian. As a high school student, I benefited from one-on-one tutoring when preparing for standardized tests, and in my sessions I aim to promote an inclusive learning environment that is both heuristic and accessible. I tutor students in reading and writing test prep, general essay writing, as well as in all levels of French. I was raised speaking French at home with my mother, and I believe in the power of fluid conversation to reinforce grammatical concepts and facilitate thematic investigation. I am an editing enthusiast, and I love collaborating with students and empowering them to convey meaning in more compelling and polished ways. I feel most proficient when engaging with high school students and the nuanced subject matter they address, but my experience tutoring children at elementary and middle school levels enables me to interact comfortably with students of all ages. I like to adopt a teaching style that deviates from the dynamic of a large classroom setting, and from the often divisive tone of a traditional student-teacher relationship. With my school days still close behind, I hope to establish myself as less of an authority figure and more as an ally on the quest towards self-betterment. I hope to one day work as an editor in trade publishing, and I have been weighing the merits of pursing an MFA in literary translation. I worked as a laborer on a construction crew for years, and I have enjoyed farming both in the United States and abroad in France. I acted in plays and musicals throughout high school and college. I enjoy playing basketball, soccer, and the acoustic guitar. I have dabbled in stand-up comedy. I love movies and television, but their appeal pales in comparison to that of a good book.

As a former long-time teacher of both French and Spanish, I believe every person can learn a foreign language. I have taught all levels, from preschoolers through adult language learners in college, and have a wide variety of techniques and resources at my disposal to help students master skills and concepts. For me, it's the relationships I form with my students that matter the most; I like to build lessons around my students' needs and interests to keep them engaged in the lessons and to show them how they can use their new language for self-expression and in everyday life. I have several philosophies I follow when working with students: I stress focusing on strengths instead of concentrating on weaknesses, rewarding the effort instead of the outcome, and sticking by my students by being their biggest cheerleader.I was very fortunate to graduate with an MA in French and a BS in Foreign Language Education from UW-Madison. During my graduate work I met my husband, then a graduate student in French, and we've had a wonderful life speaking French at home, traveling to French-speaking countries and raising our daughter bilingual French-English. As I am also a former Spanish teacher, living in Texas is like a dream - it's so easy to speak and learn Spanish in the Dallas-Fort Worth area (although I hear quite a bit of French here, too!) Any French or Spanish students are bound to find ample opportunities to practice their new language skills.
