My experiences with schooling in Nigeria have taught me just how important a teacher's attitude is on the student's success, that is just half of the goal. I see myself in ten years managing my own nonprofit that helps young people in the developing world acquire tech and communication skills, like coding, english writing or data science, empowering them to pursue their own dreams. I was recently accepted to be a Math Fellow for a nonprofit organization called SAGA Innovations. At SAGA, I will be a full time tutor for early high school students studying in underprivileged spaces for the full 2016/2017 academic year. I am excited to have this opportunity, because I can use my love of learning to impact students in spaces that lack the necessary resources. Varsity Tutors is another stepping stone to complement this experience. The more exposure I get to mentoring different types of tutees, the stronger and more prepared I am to be a top tier mentor--a skill I will most definitely need for my long term goals. Growing up as a competitive swimmer, I invested countless hours of practice and competition to improve my skills in the sport that I loved. As I became older and began my studies at Syracuse University, I discovered that I had an affinity for French history, culture and language. After interning at a French kindergarten in Strasbourg, France during the summer of my junior year, I knew that I wanted to dedicate my professional years to teaching others French. After graduating from Syracuse, I spent the first year of my French graduate program in Tours, France. This experience was invaluable and gave me a greater understanding of the French people and the intricacies of the language. I, then, spent the second year of my graduate studies teaching French 1 and 2 to undergraduate students. I enjoyed working with adult learners and seeing them overcome the initial intimidation of being immersed in a French speaking environment. After graduate school, I taught all levels of French to middle school and high school students. Through the years, I have learned a great deal about language learners and how each student's needs are unique. I want learning French to be fun and not stressful. I know that it is not an easy task to master a new language (been there, done that ;))! I have a great deal of patience for this exciting process. I encourage my students to be confident in their present level of French (be it beginning or advanced), never forgetting that it is okay to make mistakes along the way. I am a sophomore at Vanderbilt University in the College of Arts and Sciences, and I hope to graduate with bachelor's degrees in chemistry and English.I like to work with motivated students. I understand that, while test scores are an insufficient measure of a student's capability, high test scores can open a lot of doors in the college application process, and I want to see those doors open for my students. As I understand it, the best way to improve test scores is to do as many practice problems as possible. However, in standardized-test-taking there are many ways to work smarter, not harder. I like to work with students on pattern recognition and breaking down problems to their smallest component parts to make each problem more intuitive than the last.

I earned both my BA and my MA in French and Francophone Studies from the University of Illinois at Chicago. I tutored various subjects as a volunteer with the NBC Homework Hotline, and I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to teach French for 2 years while earning my Master's. I am very passionate about learning and teaching foreign languages, and I hope to share that with my students. In my experience students particularly enjoy (and benefit from) learning and exploring new cultures while learning the language itself.
