What topics can I expect to review in my Charlotte MCAT prep?
The MCAT is a digital exam consisting of four multiple-choice sections. Each section is scored individually on a scale from 118-132 and tallied together to produce an overall score from 472-528. Here is a more detailed look at the material covered on each section of the exam:
1. Chemical and Biological Foundations of Biological Systems
This section has 59 questions over a testing session lasting 95 minutes. Exam items are divided between 10 reading passages, with 15 raw knowledge questions placed at the conclusion of the section. Some of the most important topics on this segment of the MCAT include how tissues, organs, and organ systems work in the human body, inorganic and organic chemistry, basic biochem, and how physics are involved in various biological systems.
2. Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills
This section measures a test-taker's verbal reasoning, reading comp, and analytical thinking skills. You have a total of 90 minutes to answer 53 passage-based questions. Unlike other portions of the test, this section's core content is not science-based. Instead, passages are sourced from the humanities (history, literature, etc,) and social sciences (psychology, sociology, etc.). Some of the skills assessed include utilizing context to define unfamiliar phrases, working out how the addition of hypothetical info could change a piece, and making informed inferences based on what you read. While you don't need any existing knowledge to answer the questions on this section, you may have some from preparing for one of the sections below.
3. Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems
The third section of the MCAT follows the first one's structure, consisting of 59 questions split between passage-based and standalone formats over a testing session of 95 minutes. Some of the subjects you'll be tested on include how microscopic cells work together so the organism can grow and reproduce, how cells respond to outside stimuli, and how cells go about acquiring the energy and other resources they need to survive.
4. Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Biology
The fourth and final section on the exam also follows the relatively standard format of 59 questions (including passage-based and independent items) in 95 minutes. This section includes questions about mental health, how behavior can impact health (positively or negatively), introductory psychology, introductory sociology, and social implications of practicing medicine. For instance, test-takers are expected to understand how social stratification can dictate an individual's access to resources and resulting well-being.
Why should I trust Varsity Tutors with my Charlotte MCAT preparation needs?
If you take a Charlotte MCAT prep class, you'll use our exclusive live virtual platform to study with a knowledgeable instructor and a handful of other students preparing for the examination. Our online classroom supports communication in real time, so asking your teacher for help is as simple as raising your hand. Of course, you don't have to worry about going anyplace just to study online. Who wants to worry about something like that?
Working with other students also offers several advantages. You can all split the cost of your expert test prep, making it more affordable than you may think. Better yet, you can work together and create a collaborative learning environment that can help you build a more comprehensive understanding of MCAT concepts. For example, a student who writes a song to remember the process by which glucose is converted into energy can share it with everybody else. You can also explain a topic to another student in order to reinforce your own understanding while helping them out. If you ever feel like you need individualized help with something, you are free to arrange private study sessions with your teacher as well.
If you want personalized attention on a consistent basis, working with a private educator may be a better option for you. A tutor can take the time to understand your unique academic goals and preferred learning style and then design sessions around them to enhance your study efficiency. You can also learn at your own pace with a private instructor, whether that means moving more slowly or more quickly through a particular topic.
Some students choose to take practice assessments during their tutoring sessions to get a sense of what to expect on the actual test. The MCAT takes a long time, and completing practice exams under realistic conditions can help you understand the intellectual stamina you'll need on exam day. Since each section is separately-timed, you can't afford to burn up too much time on any individual item either. Your instructor may show you when it is better to take a guess and move on as opposed to puzzling over one answer endlessly.
We also try to make all of our services as convenient as possible. For instance, we offer two and four-week classes to help you find one that fits into your busy itinerary. Similarly, we start new classes every week so that you can start when you are ready.
