The LSAT stands for Law School Application Test, and it is accepted by all ABA-accredited law schools and Canadian Common Law schools. The exam takes two hours and 55 minutes to complete. There are three multiple-choice sections on the exam that you take on the day of the exam and one essay section that you can take any time within a year of the test day. The three multiple-choice sections of the LSAT are Reading Comprehension, Analytical Reasoning, and Logical Reasoning. These sections are also referred to as the Digital LSAT. The Writing section of the LSAT is taken via a secure online portal. The Reading Comprehension section of the LSAT consists of questions that challenge you to effectively understand written information. You will also answer questions that require you to discern the author's attitude based on the tone of the passage. During the Analytical Reasoning section, you must understand the relationships between pieces of information. You will need to make sound inferences and work with conditional statements. This section requires that you interact with the information in a reasoned, thoughtful manner. You will have 35 minutes to complete this section.
The Logical Reasoning section measures your capacity to evaluate arguments, complete arguments, and analyze information. You will encounter content from informal discourse, advertisements, and scholarly publications. In addition to comprehending the information, you must recognize the parts of the arguments you encounter. You will have a chance to display your ability to use analogies, identify flaws in arguments, and recognize similarities and differences between types of reasoning. There are two portions of this section, and you will have 70 minutes to complete both portions.
The Writing section of the LSAT requires you to choose between one of two positions and explain your reasoning. This section requires you to demonstrate your ability to form an effective argument, use evidence in your reasoning, and use the English language well. This section is not scored, but your response will be sent to any law school where you submit an application. The individual law schools will read your response and assess your writing on their own. You will have 35 minutes to complete this section of the exam.
