If you're a student currently attending a Virginia Beach school like Ocean Lakes High School or Cape Henry Collegiate, Varsity Tutors can set you up with top-notch Virginia Beach SAT prep. The SAT, which is a standardized exam accepted by many United States colleges and universities, evaluates whether or not a student is ready for college and has retained the knowledge and skills taught in school.
Many students will prepare to take the SAT during their junior year of high school. The SAT is a critical part of getting into the college or university of your choice, so you'll want to take advantage of the best prep opportunities in order to impress the admissions office. Varsity Tutors can set you up with a Virginia Beach SAT prep course to help you work towards your academic goals.
What can Virginia Beach SAT prep cover?
The SAT takes three hours to complete if you choose to opt out of the optional essay section. The required sections evaluate your skills in Math, Writing and Language, and Reading. The Math section measures your algebraic skills. The Writing and Language section assesses your ability to write using standard English conventions. The Reading section evaluates your ability to draw conclusions based on a given passage. Let's take a closer look at the skills you can review in an SAT prep course to help you feel confident on exam day.
The Math test is actually composed of two different parts, and you are only permitted to use a calculator during one of these sections. Together, the sections take 80 minutes to complete. You'll have to answer 58 multiple-choice and grid-in questions on the basics of algebra and other math concepts. The questions will require you to analyze a real-world issue and represent it mathematically. In an SAT prep class, you'll have the opportunity to practice solving algebraic problems accurately and quickly.
The Writing and Language section is your opportunity to showcase your editorial skills and improve how a passage develops ideas using syntax, style, and tone. You will not need to have any previous knowledge about the topic being presented in the passage to do well in this section of the exam. An SAT prep instructor can help you practice how to change punctuation, words, and sentence construction in order to improve a text's impact. You'll want to review proper verb tense, comma use, grammar, subject-verb agreement, and parallel construction for this part of the SAT. These concepts can be difficult and working with an expert teacher can help you feel confident in your abilities.
The Reading section will have passages which can come from classic world literature, economics articles, or even a United States founding document. You'll be required to read these passages and demonstrate your ability to find evidence to support a conclusion. This is your opportunity to showcase your ability to make conclusions based on historical, social studies, and science texts. An SAT prep course can help you practice how to identify relationships between passages and the accompanying information. You'll have 65 minutes to complete the 52 questions found on this part of the exam.
The optional Essay adds 50 minutes to your total SAT exam time. You'll be required to write a single essay response. This section will provide you with a passage in which an author makes an argument. Your job is to consider the author's use of evidence, concept development, and persuasive technique. You'll need to assess the argument but will not be asked to give your own opinion on the issue.
Whether you want to focus on a single section or do a more comprehensive review, Varsity Tutors can set you up with the right SAT prep opportunity to help you as you work towards your educational goals.

I graduated from University of California Davis with a BS in Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior. I am currently attending medical school in Virginia. I enjoy tutoring and have been doing it in an official capacity for approximately 2 years. ... It is important not only to teach information to student, but to teach them the tools to problem solve and learn on their own.... In a first session it is important to discuss the subject and information a student wants to cover. It is also important to set expectations for me as the tutor (what the student expects from me) and expectations for the learning (I usually expect that a student try to study the material prior to the session and formulate at least a few questions for the session).

I gained a lot of experience tutoring while in high school - from helping friends with homework to teaching workshops on SAT Math. My Philosophy of Teaching My philosophy stems from the belief that a child’s life is influenced by their education and self-esteem. Education and self-esteem are the foundations for the students to be able to function in society. It is important for students to know I care about them, their learning, and their future. Confidence in my teaching ability is as important as having confidence that all students can learn. I practice and teach a positive attitude towards learning. I expect that my students learn and practice a positive attitude. Gaining an optimistic and well-rounded learning experience can help students become productive and successful in our society. Regardless of a student’s background or ability, they deserve to learn in a safe and nurturing environment. A student’s impression of school should be a positive one. Positive experiences begin with the teacher teaching in a respectful, caring, and understanding manner. Other positive experiences come from students and administrators. School is a place of discovering, growing, and learning. Stimulating and nurturing a student’s interest to learn, encourages a positive attitude about school. Students need to be creative and know it is fine to be an individual. Creativity and individuality are pulled from a variety of learning styles. Students can be more productive learners with the use of manipulative, peer tutoring, cooperative learning, and differentiated strategies. Students should be allowed to explore problem-solving methods in all academic areas as well as social interaction. Assessments assist in providing information to determine the students’ abilities and progress. Allowing students’ to assist in grading their work provides immediate feedback on performance. Students want to know how they are progressing. Experiencing different test taking strategies is equally important as knowing the information being tested. A Child’s social skills are important as a child’s education. To help students develop life skills, it is important that I create and educational environment that requires structures, consistency, fairness, and care. Students assist with rules, consequences, and rewards during the class. Constant positive modeling of desired behaviors is important. As the teacher it is important that I am always a positive role model. Being a positive role model can be the example a student needs if ever in a negative situation. I am constantly striving to improve and learn more. It is essential that I am always moving forward and increasing my knowledge and skills. Constantly moving forward will assist me in being able to effectively respond to my students’ needs. Therefore, continuing my education and acquiring new strategies for teaching will assist me in being a positive and influential role model.
