As a small child, I had some developmental delays that led my pediatrician to tell my parents that I would never reach some normal cognitive milestones. While school teachers accepted my limitations, my mom would have none of that. She read with me every day, challenging me to work harder and never treating me differently than another child. I quickly improved, reading before kindergarten and surpassing those "normal" milestones by third grade, with no remaining cognitive or social impairments. I learned that persevering through challenges with determination allows for incredible growth. Armed with this attitude, I have embraced a life of growth and service that has demonstrated to me how a career in medicine can improve lives just like mine.

To better serve others, I learned as much as possible. Early in college, I joined an osteoarthritis research team. Understanding causes of and treatment for chronic knee pain fascinated me. I enjoyed the subject so much that I taught myself how to use additional software essential for collecting data. This extra education allowed me to improve how efficiently we ran our data collection sessions and also gave me an opportunity to be a leader. As an upperclassman, I became the Director of Training for my team, writing an orientation manual and holding weekly sessions for new research assistants. The highest satisfaction in my assignment came from becoming less needed as new students learned the same skills that I had developed. Since I had many positive experiences with this group, I wondered if I would be happier researching in a lab than caring for patients in a clinic. However, an encounter with a research participant significantly impacted my outlook. While participating in one of our studies, this girl experienced an unexpected seizure. Immediately, I reacted and found my actions nearly involuntary as I moved to change her position and protect her from harming herself. As she regained consciousness, I also found it natural to try to understand what led to the seizure. Through caring for her, I better realized that I not only loved research, but I was also enthusiastic about working with and helping people improve their health. I am determined to be a doctor who uses novel evidence-based care with patients so that they can get the best care possible.

While research taught me that I could use knowledge to help people, I gained a passion for caring for underserved populations through service in my community. Having grown up speaking Spanish, I began interpreting for Spanish-speaking patients at three different medical clinics tailored to uninsured patients. One night, I worked with a patient who taught me the value of good doctor-patient rapport. He had diabetes for five years and, despite taking medication and carefully monitoring his blood pressure and blood glucose levels every day, was not experiencing any measurable improvements. He appeared nervous as I translated the bad news and seemed resistant to receive any further treatment from us. Recognizing the cultural barriers that caused this man's hesitation, the doctor and I asked him questions to understand why he was concerned. We then carefully explained why an insulin treatment would save his life, making sure to praise him for his earlier efforts. Although he still felt nervous, he began asking questions until deciding that using insulin would be the best choice he could make. I learned that I could best influence others by first gaining their trust. I want to be a doctor who connects with each patient and inspires them to improve their health.

Serving uninsured patients in my community helped me to see that I could find other ways to help those who could not always help themselves. I took advantage of my position as a student-athlete to work with the community outreach program of my athletics department. I felt fortunate to meet and serve many children with intellectual and physical disabilities who inspired me because of the brave way they lived. My favorite event, called Courageous Kids, allowed me to do modified track events with them, which provided more physical activity than many of them usually enjoyed. I felt ecstatic as I ran down the track with them, helping them to do things that others told them were impossible. More importantly, I could see the happiness this brought to their siblings and parents, who had to watch these children suffer so often. Seeing the way this affected both the children and their families taught me that taking care of someone in need influences more than that one person. I want to be a care provider so that I can make life better for families and entire communities.

Through research, patient care, and service, I have learned that taking care of people in my community through quality medical care is my mission. I want to be a doctor so that I can help patients of every background have a better life.
