I received my degree in Special Education and Elementary Education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. I moved down to Maryland from Pennsylvania three years ago and I love it! I am currently a Special Education teacher at at an elementary school in Prince Georges County. I have been a special education teacher for several years and love teaching children with a wide range of abilities. I am excited to get to know you and your child! Some of my hobbies and interests include reading, cooking, skiing, traveling, and hiking.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would get to know the child first. We would discuss interests and what they find important. We would discuss different subjects they are learning in school. I would also bring activities based on the curriculum of what the child would be learning in school. Based off of the student's performance, I would design my instruction.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would try to take what the student is having difficulty with and create activities based on their interest.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would break down the assignment and teach different strategies for working with that skill.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would break the text into small parts. I would have the student fill out a graphic organizer based on the skill we are discussing. We could also bring a story to life by acting it out.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

There are many strategies that I find successful with my students based on the student level. I find that chunking text and having students verbally work through the problem first are a few successful strategies.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would find what the student is interested in and try to find activities and text based on their interest.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

In order to ensure the student is understanding the material, I would have an exit ticket that the student would complete independently. If they demonstrate that they are still struggling with the material, we would dig deeper into the skill at the following session.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I build a student's confidence by using praise and creating activities based on their ability level.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate a student's needs based on observation and student performance.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I would create activities on the student's level. I would also use a timer and build in breaks between activities. I have a lot of experience adapting to student needs. There are many ways I can accommodate based on your child's needs.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I would use whatever materials I feel would make the child successful. I often use manipulatives when working on a math lesson. I also often use whiteboards or computers to help visually show what we are discussing in a lesson.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe all students have the ability to learn and the right to access an education that is best for them. I know that every student's learning style is different, and it is my responsibility to teach based on their learning style. I believe that all children are important, and getting to know them will help drive my instruction.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

A great way to help a student become an independent learner is to provide the student with checklists to help them gear their independent work.
