Chemistry Tutoring review by Alexandra in Lincolnwood, IL
The student and I focused on reviewing chemical reactions to truly cement his understanding of how atoms interact and bind. We started with a pop quiz on the material asking for differentiation on types of reactions and the differences between ionic and covalent bonds. While he did well, we reviewed the concepts at hand in a more in-depth matter to ensure he has a solid foundation of the material to build from. He stated that he felt better about predicting how ions and their electron configuration would be. After this, we moved on to discuss the different types of chemical reactions and how to write them out in a chemical equation. He had some difficulty with acid-base reactions, so we covered many examples in identifying acids and bases in a chemical reaction and how this occurred at an atomic level. We finished by covering redox reactions and those types (single displacement, combustion, etc.). One major concept that he grasped onto quickly was understanding oxidation states, which normally confuses many students. After the lesson we had last week, he showed a notably stronger level of engagement with the material and was more confident in his understanding of the material. Another major focus for this lesson was strengthening the student's note-taking abilities. At times during the lessons, we would just take a section of the material and work on identifying what was most important and what was additionally useful and converting bulky or obscure definitions/explanations into more easily accessible notes.
