Tutoring review by Martin in Watervliet, NY
The student and I continued covering integrals. We went over and corrected a review test that he had taken, as well as completed some practice problems online. Topics covered included fundamental theorem of calculus, when (and when not) to do "u substitution", how to chose a "u", and general processes (remembering to find "du", remember to reverse substitute after finding the anti-derivative, applying boundary values, etc.). Once he had done a few, he developed a rhythm and then was very capable, so we will continue to practice identifying first steps after first viewing a problem.

In our last session, the student and I met to finish reading her assigned work and construct an evaluative essay on the friendship between two characters in the novel. We read together, "popcorn" style (trading off reading aloud while the other person followed along), and stopped to summarize every few pages. We then selected quotes together and talked about the best ways to demonstrate the student's claim that these characters are an example of a deep and enduring friendship.

Today's session was spent preparing the student for her final exam. We did a brief overview of the material she is expected to know and spent the majority of the session working through empirical and molecular formulas and gas law.

Tutoring review by Ahad in Watervliet, NY
We discussed progress in several subjects. We prepared for the student's history test on the Middle Colonies. He completed his essay assignment requiring him to write a letter from the perspective of a colonial citizen who had moved to the Middle Colonies from New England. The student organized and wrote an excellent letter from the perspective of a successful farmer living in Pennsylvania. In it, he reiterated what he learned about the land, geography, economy, political and religious policy, and social life of the Middle Colonies, as well as how each compared to the New England colonies. Finally, we reviewed his history textbook's coverage of the material and I quizzed the student on possible test subjects.

Tutoring review by Melissa in Watervliet, NY
Today we went over the previous essay we worked on together as well as a new essay the student had written. She did very well in going over my edits and figuring out the best way to use or improve them! She has one solid essay to turn in for her common college application. We then worked on a short one paragraph essay for her college application. I helped her understand what the question was asking and how to best answer it without going off topic. She picked this up very quickly! We then worked on a previous essay she had written for a class that she was thinking of using for an extra essay for her college applications. I helped her find what she should change by reading over the essay and letting her hear what mistakes were in the paper. She was able to pick out over 60% of her mistakes and correct them properly. She is improving so much!!
