Recent Suffolk Study Skills and Organization Tutoring Session Notes
Today, the student and I read for the first twenty minutes, focusing on phonics and word pronunciation. She sometimes guesses the word instead of sounding it out. She did very well, overall. We then worked on her sight words assigned by her teacher. I went over one of the lists just to see where she was at in regards to spelling. We then focused on those words that she had trouble spelling, finding fun ways to spell it out on her whiteboard (different colors, funny font styles, etc.). After practicing writing the words several times, I tested her on the spelling again and she was able to spell the words correctly. This was a win in my book.

We discussed strategies for motivation and study skills that have worked in the past. The student decided to focus on attendance this week and bring material for next session.

During our session we continued to edit a paper for the student's biology class. He has a lot of talent with writing, and if he works on his editing skills he will be a very skilled writer. I left him with some edits to make, and told him that I would look over his paper one last time on Sunday night. He still needs to ask his teacher how long the paper actually needs to be, as right now he has just over two pages double spaced.

We went through the student's psychology chapter together. He read the chapter aloud so that he could ask me immediate questions about what he didn't understand and so that I could stop him at key points and have him summarize verbally and in writing what he had just read. Towards the end of our session, we went over the key concepts in the chapter that he was sure he'd be tested on, and we discussed how they related to each other.

In today's session, the student and I reviewed her online schedule and made sure everything she needed to do was clearly outlined in her planner. She completed her math assignment while I was there. We also worked on paragraphs she has due tomorrow with her science project. This served as a review as well for the test in science she has tomorrow. We planned out assignment goals for the rest of the week.

In today's session, the student and I reviewed the week 5 readings in preparation for the week 5 quiz later this week. The week 5 material consists mostly of a long PowerPoint presentation on the advertising industry--its history, structure, methods, impact on individuals, and relationships with media. There were additional readings on the impact of the "new economy" (sharing of assets) on our culture, and on how media defines and utilizes certain concepts of masculinity. Particularly for the reading on advertising, it was important for me to present and discuss background information, to enable him to better digest the material. Once again, he was very receptive to the tutoring, which I believe will help him to prepare for this week's quiz.
