Hello! My name is Karen, and I am a Japanese, Spanish, English, and ESL tutor. I have lived and worked locally and abroad, serving both in classroom and translator roles. After receiving my Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from the University of Washington, I worked for the Japanese Exchange and Teaching Program in Fukushima, Japan. Here, I taught English to elementary and junior high students. After this, I spent time working in the Richland and Pasco School Districts as a Japanese coach and substitute teacher. I also spent time with the Columbia Basin College ESL Program, where I was a volunteer ESL tutor. In addition to these classroom roles, I spent time acting as an interpreter for Spanish, Japanese and English lectures on various topics and interpreted for local guides on tours aboard 800-passenger cruise ship run by international non-profit organization on a global peace voyage.I love sharing my passion for teaching, languages, and communication with others, and I look forward to working with you!

I received my bachelor degree in statistics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign this year. With a solid foundation of statistics, Id like to help more students to improve their grades and find their own way of tackling the subject. I'd like to share my learning tips I got when I was a student. Besides statistics, I am also interested in tutoring algebra and calculus. I like to encourage students to ask questions to ensure they completely understand the content and could apply to new problems. The sudden moment when the students understand something they've been struggling with is the truly rewarding to me.Outside of tutoring, I like to watch movies, anime and listen to indie music.

I am currently a sophomore at Columbia University in the City of New York. I am pursuing a degree in Earth and Environmental Engineering with a concentration in Sustainability and Energy, and I am minoring in East Asian Studies (specifically, Japanese). After graduation, I plan on working in the renewable energy sector in either the United States or Japan. From September 2014 through July 2015, I worked as a tutoring specialist for a company. I tutored students ranging in age from 13 to 50, in various subjects such as calculus and chemistry. While I enjoy tutoring students in all of the subjects I specialize in, I love tutoring students in physics (specifically, mechanics and waves). Physics is my favorite subject to tutor because while it is more difficult to demonstrate phenomena from other subjects such as organic chemistry, physics is a very prevalent science, so even by rolling my pencil off of a table, I can easily demonstrate physics concepts to my students. For me, hearing "Oh, that makes so much more sense now!" from the students whom I tutor makes my job very rewarding because working with them to find the approach that best caters to their needs feels awesome. As a tutor, I always ensure that my students have a good qualitative understanding of the subjects they are struggling in before helping them with quantitative problems. For example, rather than simply telling my calculus students the formula for integration by parts, I first show them how it is derived so they acquire a good grasp of how it operates.Outside of school, I really enjoy being involved with music. I love singing, playing the drums, piano, and guitar. My favorite genre of music is rock, so playing rock songs with a band has always been one of my favorite things to do.

I am a graduate of Harvard University. I received my A.B. in Chemistry and Physics, with a secondary in the Comparative Study of Religion and a citation in Japanese. Over the course of my studies, I have worked in a variety of laboratories in biology, biophysics, and quantum chemistry, both in the US and Japan. Since graduation, I have studied the Japanese Tea Ceremony (/ "Chanoyu"/"Chad") intensively in Japan, living and working in a Japanese linguistic context. While I tutor in a broad range of subjects, I most enjoy tutoring in Japanese, and the challenge of teaching the critical thinking required for classes in literature, history, religions, or the social sciences. My academic journey has given me a broad appreciation for interdisciplinary, and a passion for teaching and helping others come to understand the subjects they are studying, especially in a broader context. I work with my students to ensure not only that they perform well in their classes or on their exams, but also to advise them in areas of interest for writing papers/theses, and help them to tie what they are learning into the broader context of their lives. I believe that this approach makes learning more enjoyable, interesting, and easier to understand and remember. I look forward to working with you!

I graduated from the University of Washington with a B.A. in International Studies and a minor in Japanese. I studied abroad in Japan at Kobe University's Intercultural Studies department, and also studied broadly while in university, with coursework in mathematics, cultural studies, economics, and business. The subjects I tutor are Japanese and different levels of mathematicsfields that I particularly loveas well as standardized test preparation (SAT, SSAT, ISEE, and HSPT). I have found that studying becomes more enjoyable and effective when content is connected with examples of application. Finding funny, memorable ways to apply course content is my favorite way to internalize the material. I view learning as equipping myself with different tools to better understand the world. With this attitude, studying became truly exciting for me, and making education more accessible and fueling curiosity have become my passions. In my free time, I like to indulge in my hobbies: reading, cooking, laughing with my friends, adventuring in YouTube, and going to concerts.

Hello,I'm a recent graduate of the California Institute of Technology in Economics and Computer Science. I was also accepted at Harvard, Princeton, MIT, and Stanford. I have a broad range of interests spanning science, math, engineering, social science, the humanities, the arts, and athletics (I also played on the Caltech basketball team). My background allows me to tutor general college prep, especially the SAT, ACT and the GRE. I love to teach analytical thinking, ranging from advanced Math and Physics to strategies for understanding literature and developing arguments.I've tutored & received tutoring my entire life. My dad started drilling me on multiplication tables at 4 and 2 years later, when my oldest sister came of age, I began working with her. 3 siblings came after her who I worked with every day to improve their mathematical & verbal reasoning, giving them assignments out of workbooks our parents got us, correcting & reviewing their answers. I still help my youngest sibling with her Calculus homework today. My first compensated tutoring gig came the summer before my junior year when I taught local high school & community college students chemistry & physics from my home. Since then I've worked constantly as a tutor, working with a company in various locations throughout the Southland. I specialize in SAT math, having led workshops & boot camps which saw some students improve their score 200 points. In college, I sharpened my tutoring skills against the world's best whetstones. I do not just mean Caltech professors, though they deserve their props. The Institute fosters a collaborative environment where students thrive through teaching and learning from others. You really cannot get by in the school without these skills. Thus, my educational experience has exposed me to many of the effective ways people learn and teach. When I tutor people, no matter what the subject, I keep my utmost focus on patience and encouragement. Even if I find the subject easy, I can harken back to long nights trying to understand complex topics at Caltech which my tutors found easy, and gain inspiration from their patience and encouragement. These experiences fostered in me a love of learning and passing my knowledge onto others.I hope you feel inclined to take advantage of my willingness, no, intense desire to work with you. I plan to remain local indefinitely as I pursue other ongoing ventures.Thank you,Brian

I first became acquainted with the world of tutoring back in college when I worked for the America Reads program. Through that experience I found that I really enjoyed teaching, and I took that passion all the way to Japan.During my 3 and half years there as an ESL instructor, I had the opportunity to work with a variety of students: everyone from small children to retires. While it was great helping students to improve their test scores, translate their presentations, and boost their communication skills, I feel my most valuable contribution was cultural exchange. Even if it was just for moment, I'm happy that I encouraged locals to look past the stereotypes and see foreigners not as alien others, but just people.Since coming back to the US, I've worked primarily as a content writer and strategist. Of course, I still have plenty of time to flex the creative muscles that I built at NYU; I run a site about life in Japan entitled Darkside of the Sun.net, where I double as the author of the comic strip NEET House.
