My background is as a linguist for a movie company. I am a native speaker of Mandarin. I'm am experienced teaching language for kids and adults. I am currently a computer science student.

I am certified in the highest level of the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK level 6) and have lived in China for over three years. I have studied Chinese language and culture for the last seven years and have extensive personal experiences and interests in the culture. My approach to teaching Mandarin Chinese is to start with what most Chinese teachers skip over: fundamentals. I emphasize the need to teach the fundamentals of grammar to allow an easier, clearer, and more natural progression in learning language and building new skills. I also believe that culture and language are inseparable and am especially interested in Chinese folk opera, history, and the development of language and culture over time. Since my study has been done in Northern China, my Mandarin accent is very standard and I'm also very knowledgeable about local expressions in addition to standard Mandarin. I am an American who has put a lot of time and effort into studying Chinese so I am extremely patient and understanding with students and know how to explain Mandarin Chinese in a way that could help anyone.

I'm a freshman at Stanford University pursuing a degree in mathematical and computational science. I've been tutoring students from grades 3-12 throughout high school, and I look forward to continue in college. Nothing excites me more than learning something new, and I strive to share my excitement with my tutees.While I can tutor a variety of subjects, I'm most experienced in test prep and STEM subjects. During my time at Oberlin College, where I studied Latin and Computer Science, I continued to work as a third-grade classroom assistant, a high-school algebra tutor, and a mentor to high school students seeking to improve their grades and craft successful college essays. Following my graduation in 2012, I worked for two years as an ESL teacher at Shanxi Agricultural University in Shanxi, China.After my 8 years as a tutor, teacher and mentor, my students have been adult learners, first grade beginning readers, and each grade level in between. I found that during my college career, understanding various teaching styles really impacted my foreign language learning comprehension abilities, and impacted my overall motivation to continue to succeed in perfecting my language proficiency. That being said, in previous experiences teaching younger students and fellow peers, I make sure to tailor my teaching style to the individual. Whether you are a auditory learner, a visual learner, kinesthetic learner or you learn through other methods, I will make sure to teach you in a way that is best fit for you. After discussing what your main goal is, I will come up with a curriculum that I feel is best fit for you. My main goal is to make sure that you the learner, are confident and comfortable using your foreign language knowledge to the best of your ability. What you learn will not be limited to basic phrases that come straight from a textbook, but rather useful information that would allow you to complete daily tasks in real life with ease. Lastly, when learning a foreign language many tend to be nervous and or be afraid of making mistakes. I would like to say that I embrace making mistakes because that is the only way you will learn.
