Helping students succeed is something that brings me enjoyment on a daily basis. It's the reason I decided to major in education. I am in my final semester at Ohio State University in the STEM Education Program with a focus in chemistry. Currently, I am a full time student teacher in a ninth grade physical science classroom and chemistry classroom. I also student taught half a day during the entire fall semester as well in a ninth grade physical science classroom, chemistry classroom and eighth grade science classroom. In may I will graduate and get my degree from Ohio State University and license from the state of Ohio. I will still however be in Columbus until early June. I have always found science interesting and from my education in school and current placement am comfortable tutoring chemistry and lower grade level sciences. I also had the experience of tutoring for a company called STEM-U this past fall. We had two sessions of classes throughout the semester where I was in charge of classes ranging anywhere from four to twelve students. We did activities that were not only fun and enjoyable but also gave kids a basic introduction into coding using Spheros. I was a part of an engineering class as well through the company that went to different elementary schools once a week and taught them the engineering process by having them create, build and test ideas to complete challenges. Finally through STEM-U I was in charge of a math games class at an elementary school. We created and used lessons that revolved around fun games that had kids learning and actively using a variety of math topics.
Chemistry involves science concepts as well as a large amount of math. I have taken calculus 1 and 2 at Ohio State and have always been strong in math. I feel comfortable taking my math background combined with my teaching experience and tutoring students on a variety of math topics including algebra 2, pre-algebra, algebra, middle school math, and pre-calculus. I also have an extensive chemistry background due to my program at Ohio State and can tutor for high school and college level chemistry. I've also taken several writing courses at school and done exceptionally well. Friends and family have asked me to look through their college admissions essays along with papers written for classes. As a four year member and senior captain of the speech and debate team in high school, I worked hard to increase my public speaking skills and feel comfortable speaking not only in front of a class, but also large groups of people. This gives me the background and knowledge to be able to tutor in the field of public speaking and bolster kids confidence and ability to speak in a public setting. My favorite subjects to tutor would be any math topics listed above along with science, in particular chemistry. Math and science are often looked on with disdain from students because they are often the hardest and most rigorous subjects. I enjoy making these topics fun and interesting to students. My teaching philosophy is first and foremost to create a comfortable and trusting relationship with students. I bring an enthusiasm and interest to the classroom and content and look to create lessons or tutoring sessions where students are engaged and interested in the content. I want them to feel comfortable failing and asking questions. Failure is part of the learning process and we will take their failures and issues with the content and look at what confuses or gives them the most trouble. Then we will begin to address these issues together at the basis of the problem and work together to build vocabulary and content awareness in order to grow their knowledge. Outside of academics I am interested in sports, in particular baseball, I am currently the Vice President of the Ohio State University Division 2 Club Baseball Team. We play games on the weekends throughout the semester and my availability will already reflect this schedule. I also enjoy coaching, to me it is just an extension of the classroom and I have had the opportunity the past two summers and will again this summer be a coach for Cleveland Indians Youth Baseball. Science continues to interest me and I stay up to date on many of the innovations and discoveries in the scientific world.
