Greetings fellow students,

I say "fellow students" because in truth we are all students learning a given subject or field, and we continue to learn new knowledge and acquire useful skills throughout our lives. As a physician, I can attest to the need for life-long learning. Medicine is definitely a field that changes and evolves rapidly.

A bit about me...

I currently work as a physician who is in sub-specialty training for hematology & oncology at a large regional hospital in New York (Long Island). Prior to moving to NY, I completed residency in Internal Medicine in Michigan and am board certified in this specialty. I attended medical school at Des Moines University in Iowa. And prior to medical school, I completed a bachelor's (B.A.) degree in psychology and Master in Public Health (MPH) degree from the University of Iowa. Also before medical school, I had the opportunity to work in public health (specifically health services research and public health program evaluation) as well as teaching and consultancy work in public health both within the U.S. and abroad.

After years of education, standardized tests, board exams, oral presentations, research, publications, lectures, etc., I can definitely relate to the demands placed on students today. It is stressful. Obviously you want to do well in whatever subject you pursue, but you are often better at some areas than others. That's where tutoring is helpful. I can recall relying on tutoring during my undergraduate college education when I struggled with inorganic and organic chemistry (classically difficulty subjects for those pursuing pre-medical studies). But that individual helped to explain things in a way that made sense to me and helped me to learn better study strategies so that I could succeed in my coursework.

I enjoy teaching, and regularly teach and mentor medical students and medical residents on a daily basis in our clinic and in the hospital. But my passion for teaching goes back to graduate school, when I began giving guest lectures on various topics related to public health or global health. In medical school, I continued to hone my skills in public speaking, teaching, and writing. I served as an interviewer for medical school applicants, as a teaching assistant for our Ethics course, lead group facilitator for problem based learning curriculum in biochemistry, and as a group lead for stress management seminars for first-year medical students. I worked as an adjunct instructor in biology, anatomy and physiology at a nearby community college. And I gave guest lectures during the summer months for students interested in health professions careers.

While I have a diverse background in the health and social sciences and research experience to draw from, my true passion is writing and providing mentoring / guidance to students interested in health professions careers. For example, I have assisted many students in the past with the preparation for medical school and residency applications. I have reviewed personal statements and curriculum vitae / resumes, and provided feedback on extracurricular experiences students have written about. I have also provided insight into study strategies for board exams or entrance exams (e.g., MCAT). I enjoy creative writing and have an eye for editorial work.

I look forward to meeting you soon and discussing how I may be able to assist with your tutoring needs.
