Q & A

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

First, I would want to get to know my student a little. I would ask what they are majoring in, what kinds of related classes they have taken in the past, and most importantly, how they learn best. I would give a little bit of background on myself as well, so as to make the student feel more comfortable and less stressed during these sessions.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I try to help students learn how to best study on their own. Instead of doing everything for a student, I want them to be able to learn how to teach themselves so they can be successful in the future, with or without a tutor.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I plan to ask students to have their notes and textbook out with them, and when there are problems they might not know or understand, I would have them flip to that page in their textbook and try reading the background information on their own so they can try to figure it out.
